In this class we will use the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a guiding framework to examine the cutting-edge technologies and processes being implemented today to attain the desired outcomes for each of the 17 SDGs. The course will explore promising techno-fixes such as direct air capture and organic photovoltaic cell technologies (along with other renewable energies), promising market approaches such as "nature positive" solutions including carbon credit trading, and promising cradle-to-cradle techniques like applying biomimicry principles to the design and production of goods. Additionally, we will explore ways to reimagine the global economy and humanity's relationship with the planet by exploring approaches such as ecological economics, industrial ecology, and others that call for a radical reconstruction of the dominant capitalistic and western paradigms that currently run the global economy. We will also consider how non-western worldviews and ways-of-being can shape new and existing pathways to achieving the SDGs and explore the ethical implications of drawing from ancient traditions and beliefs to inform sustainable planetary futures.
