A
project was formed in 2006 to better organize information in articles related to
running. It includes: track and field, trail running, road racing, marathoning, and ultramarathoning. This page and its subpages contain suggestions for enhancing such articles; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts on these topics. If you would like to help, please inquire on the
talk page and see the
to-do list there. For more information on WikiProjects, please see
Wikipedia:WikiProjects and
Wikipedia:WikiProject best practices.
This WikiProject aims primarily to create, improve and organize articles relating to running. This includes but is not limited to the history of running as a competitive sport, as recreation, and as a basic means of bipedal locomotion. It includes: track and field, trail running, road racing, marathoning, and ultramarathoning.
A list of articles needing cleanup associated with this project is available. See also the tool's wiki page and the index of WikiProjects.
In the mean time, you can find a list of running articles requiring attention here.
As of August, 2007, the List of winners of the Boston Marathon has earned featured list status, meaning it has been identified as one of the best lists produced by the Wikipedia community.
In June 2009, the List of winners of the London Marathon earned featured list status.
As of March 2010, we have over 500 articles currently tagged as being within the scope of this project. As of August 2010, we have now identified 9,524 articles as relating to this project. In September 2010, we identified an additional 680 articles that need to be assessed in terms of qualitfy and importance.
Assessment of running-related articles:
We have now shifted to a system where editors designate the importance and quality of each article using parameters on the {{ Running project}} template on each article's talk page.
All articles within the scope of WikiProject Running have been classified by quality and importance, as summarized in the table below. Users can access a list of articles with a particular combination of quality and assessment ratings by clicking on the appropriate square in this table.

It is expected that this rating and assessment scheme will require periodic and iterative maintenance, as new articles are created or identified, and existing articles are progressively improved (or, hopefully much rarer, demoted), requiring the status to be reassessed.
Of course, anyone is free to edit any of the articles they choose without regard to priority, however it is hoped that this will provide some basis for a more methodical approach to the longer-term overall improvement of content and coverage in the field.
