The 2017 Summer Youth Assembly at the United Nations is hosting a Wikipedia event for attendees to commemorate
International Youth Day. This is a private event at the United Nations and only attendees of the Youth Assembly may participate.

Wikipedia and its related projects have a global reach and audience. These sites, which can be updated by anyone, have as their goal to collect all of the information in the world, and to provide a free encyclopedia to every person in their language. This session will include presentations from three Wikipedians related to topics that demonstrate Wikipedia’s inclusivity and equity-building strengths.
Speakers will present on the following three topics: Felix Richter ( User:Salubrious Toxin), an MD, PhD student at Mount Sinai, will present on a group that he started of Mount Sinai medical students, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals to edit medical articles on Wikipedia through the non-profit, Wiki Project Med Foundation. The group decides on what articles to focus on based in part on page view statistics and current events. Richter will show attendees some tools related to page-view and quality metrics. Abhishek Suryawanshi, founder of Wikipedia Club Pune, will present on how impactful access to information through Wikipedia can be for youth in developing nations. Growing up in a rural village, using health information in Wikipedia, Suryawanshi was able to better understand and manage his asthma. Using engineering articles, he innovated irrigation techniques in his village, for which he was recognized by the President of India. Suryawanshi works in different language Wikipedias and will introduce attendees to other language Wikipedias and demonstrate the live editing map. Esther Jackson, Public Services Librarian at the New York Botanical Garden, will discuss the Plants And People initiative, a project dedicated to sharing information about botanical topics through Wikipedia. She will speak about a recent editathon arranged around the topic of “Women in Science” and demonstrate how to add a citation in Wikipedia.
