Request: This image is a bit noise and is a bit unsharp. The image is really old and extremely rare. I was wondering if anyone can do a general clean-up. I think the image has the potential of being valued image on wikipedia and even perhaps featured image. -- The Egyptian Liberal ( talk) 12:54, 6 September 2011 (UTC) reply

The image is of poor quality mostly because somewhere along the line it was saved as a highly compressed jpg. If you can follow the source of the image, maybe you can get an uncompromised version. That said, resizing it as you did does nothing for the image. Best just revert back to the original image and be content that it is somewhat flawed. JBarta ( talk) 18:08, 8 September 2011 (UTC) reply
I know the image is in poor quality :D but I was hoping you work your magic on the image. It will take a lot of work but I believe it hold such a historical value that it will be worth all the work. -- The Egyptian Liberal ( talk) 19:48, 8 September 2011 (UTC) reply
I'm trying to tell you that the image as uploaded is irreversibly damaged. There is no magic that will offer any substantial improvement. My best advice is to look in the direction of the source for a digital copy of the image before it got so highly compressed and/or reduced in size. Since the image is of such historical value and worth all the work, I'm sure you'd be more than willing to make that effort. JBarta ( talk) 20:19, 8 September 2011 (UTC) reply
Found the original picture and upload it like you asked (640 × 414 pixels). Can we now fix the image? also can resize it afterwards to bigger than original size? -- The Egyptian Liberal ( talk) 14:22, 9 September 2011 (UTC) reply
You simply re-uploaded the damaged image in it's original size. And no, resizing it again won't do any good. There are two URI's listed in the source... [1] & [2]. Those sources both contain the same damaged image. However, whoever posted those images may have in their possesion (or have access to, or can point you towards) a higher quality version of that image. Hopefully a copy before it was so highly compressed. Try to contact those people and see where they got the image. If you're willing to make the effort to find a decent image to work with, I and others are willing to do what we can to make that image as nice as possible. This image should be converted to SVG. I added the appropriate template to the image page. Actually, it seems fairly simple. It would be good practice for anyone who might wish to get Inkscape and whip up their first SVG image. If no one takes it, I might even give it a whirl myself. JBarta ( talk) 19:46, 18 September 2011 (UTC) reply

Thanks, if someone has Inkscape and can do this it would be much appreciated. It may not be quite as simple to do as it seems, because the dimensions should preferably be correct. Also, it would be nice to have some kind of mark where two colors meet, so that the image would be understandable to color-blind readers. And instead of each of the three D's, maybe it would be possible to write "Length D" in a curved fashion along the perimeter? Anythingyouwant ( talk) 20:54, 18 September 2011 (UTC) reply
After checking the article, I personally think the image you wish to replace is more than sufficient for the article. The image you propose above, while an honorable attempt, is inferior not only in image quality but in content/design. I think yours does more to muddle the concept of pi than to illustrate it. Therefore, my personal opinion is that sprucing up this image or creating an SVG version would be a waste of time. Of course my opinion being worth little more than a warm bucket of spit, you're welcome to see if anyone else chimes in. JBarta ( talk) 02:52, 19 September 2011 (UTC) reply
I don't mind the image at the top of the article now, except that it mainly illustrates what a circle, a circumference, and a diameter are, without really illustrating pi itself. My opinion isn't worth much either (though a bucket may be very valuable despite its contents). Anythingyouwant ( talk) 03:19, 19 September 2011 (UTC) reply
I think pi is not something that is easily or effectively "illustrated". Key in this discussion however is whether a particular image clarifies things or muddles them. I would argue that the one you propose muddles and the existing image does not. And I've seen some of your opinions and they are certainly worth more than any bucket ;-) JBarta ( talk) 04:36, 19 September 2011 (UTC) reply
Actually, when I wrote the above I was thinking that maybe an animation with a rolling circle might be useful. Today I happened to look back at that article and found that just such an animation is already there. (as you can see, the obvious comes slowly to me) JBarta ( talk) 02:21, 20 September 2011 (UTC) reply
Yes, the animation is a helpful part of the article. A bit distracting for a top image, though (there's a recent discussion about that at the article talk page). Anythingyouwant ( talk) 02:24, 20 September 2011 (UTC) reply

As this is a triptych, by design a three paneled image, I hope that we don't embark on the creative exercise of making this appear to be a seamless single image. Of course, if it can be improved while retaining its tri-panel appearance, wonderful. JBarta ( talk) 12:13, 23 September 2011 (UTC) reply

How are they generally kept separate? The source does not include any wooden mount. Crisco 1492 ( talk) 12:51, 23 September 2011 (UTC) reply
The source image is actually three images. How this particular set was originally mounted and displayed I don't know. JBarta ( talk) 19:32, 23 September 2011 (UTC) reply

I recombined the original images, retaining their tri-panel appearance and more proper spacing. I don't believe at any time this was a single image. I think it was simply three separate (frameless) paintings mounted next to each other on some sort of folding screen or display. JBarta ( talk) 22:29, 23 September 2011 (UTC) reply

or it was separated at some early stage (thus different aging pattern; note discontinuities in the tatami flour even within a panel - hard to tell how it was actually drawn). The question is whether we want to resynthesize a contiguous images (that is what I started yesterday) or accentuate that those are 3 distinct panels? Materialscientist ( talk) 00:58, 24 September 2011 (UTC) reply
Would we want to "fix" the smile of the Mona Lisa to fit our notions of what a painting should be, or should we simply represent it as it is? Seems to me the answer is obvious. There is more evidence pointing to them always being three distinct sections and no evidence pointing to them ever having been one image later divided. Of course, if someone wishes to go off on a creative tangent and combine these images as if they were one, that's fine I suppose... as long as it's not used prominently in an article about the paintings and as long as the image is clearly marked as a creative alteration. That's my opinion. JBarta ( talk) 01:31, 24 September 2011 (UTC) reply
I can easily imagine it was hacked by some early publisher because "it didn't fit". "Changing the Mona Lisa smile" is an interesting question (e.g. many paintings obviously lose color by aging and thus there are dozens of their color-tweaked digital versions), but we are not there yet. Graphist opinion(s):

Here's the thing (and this also goes for the "Removing a child" request above), editing out undesireable objects in a photograph can be simple, or it can be rather difficult. The difference lies in what's behind the object you wish to remove. If it's something simple and homogenous, such as grass, trees, water, concrete, etc., it's a fairly simple matter and you'll see graphists around here pounce on it quick. If on the other hand there are things like legs or church benches that need to be completely redrawn from scratch, then things become more difficult. Also, the difficulty (and the quality of the result) also depends on how large is the object to be removed. Small objects are easier and more successfully edited out than large objects. One might say "just whip out that clone tool dude and do it up!"... but I would assure you it's more difficult than that. All a clone brush does is copy one section of an image to another section of an image. This is great for grass and sky, but clumsy for body parts and other complex items. So, just a heads-up and explanation as to why these two requests will probably sit here until a "stale" tag is placed on them and eventually pass into the archives untouched. JBarta ( talk) 18:38, 22 September 2011 (UTC) reply

I am well aware of that, thank you. If it were a simple job I'd do it myself, but I am aware of my limitations. This image would just stress me out and the result wouldn't be too much better than it is now. At the very worst we could just crop the head; a slightly better way would be to crop part of the head and touch up the rest, IMHO. -- Crisco 1492 ( talk) 23:29, 22 September 2011 (UTC) reply
This one is easier than the girl as much of the part to be restored is floor, which can be copied, but the leg needs creativity and this is the part which will probably look unnatural. An image with similar jeans in similar lighting might help. There is always this question, "why is this image unique to spend a good hour on restoring it?". This is a distraction, especially with the girl. Materialscientist ( talk) 23:36, 22 September 2011 (UTC) reply
I wouldn't worry about the full size image looking a little odd. If it looks fine at thumb size that is good enough for me. Regarding the jeans, his other leg looks okay. Crisco 1492 ( talk) 23:47, 22 September 2011 (UTC) reply
Anything worth doing is worth doing well. If it can't be done well then don't do it. There's no sense in half-assing something just to say we did it. At least those are my thoughts on the subject. Of course, if someone wants to invest the time and effort in doing this well, then I think that's just dandy. JBarta ( talk) 03:04, 23 September 2011 (UTC) reply

It's not what you were looking for, but I at least made a cropped version. Maybe it's preferrable to the original, maybe it's not. Personally I think it kinda is. Use it if you wish. (I cropped a little off the top as well so the guys were a little more centered in the picture.) JBarta ( talk) 04:43, 23 September 2011 (UTC) reply

  • It would be acceptable for the infobox, but I'll leave this up for now in case anybody wants to take a shot at the more difficult technique. Thanks Jbarta. Crisco 1492 ( talk) 05:13, 23 September 2011 (UTC) reply

Done: I shudder whenever I hear the words "reduce graininess" or "denoise" because all too often the result is to simply blur the image. Presto, graininess gone! But now you have a blurred image which usually looks worse than the original. In my opinion, once a certain amount of noise or graininess gets in an image, you might as well just get used to it. Graphist opinion(s):  Done. You might have noticed that I have reuploaded quite a number of your images, including the right one. The reason is that they had excessive nominal resolution, but poor actual resolution due to pixelation. I had much better results by simply opening the source pdf, selecting the image and pasting into some graphical application. Could you please reconsider your method of copying images from pdfs and Google books? If you describe your way, we might tell where is the bug. Materialscientist ( talk) 07:49, 7 October 2011 (UTC) reply

I convert the pdf pages into jpg images.-- KAVEBEAR ( talk) 08:16, 7 October 2011 (UTC) reply
Using full Acrobat? Check the version and the conversion settings - they can be tuned between the quality and file size. You probably crop the image in some graphics program anyway. Try copy/pasting the image directly from acrobat to that program; save different versions and compare their pixelation by zooming. File:Cox Keeaumoku by Alphonse Pellion.jpg is not optimal, but can still be used as a test example. This needs to be fixed once. Materialscientist ( talk) 08:28, 7 October 2011 (UTC) reply

It's a rather low quality image to start with. Improvements would be minimal (if at all). Not sure what you have in mind for background... it's pretty neutral as it is. From what I can see, the only real area for improvement is to remove that wisp of hair on the right. All in all, it's not a bad image. I'm sure we've all seen MUCH worse. Materialscientist ( talk) 08:27, 18 October 2011 (UTC) reply
Really? Those two images are the largest resolution available online and possibliy anywhere. I think it's just how the image was drawn back in those days, those aren't noises or poor qualitiness. I mean it's a 19th century lithograph that the artist probably spend a few days or week on while his ship stopped by in the islands, not like some masterpiece of painting or watercolor that took years to draw.-- KAVEBEAR ( talk) 02:21, 19 October 2011 (UTC) reply

Yes, I messed up No. 2 trying to desaturate half of the face (the PC I used then didn't show me that). Restored. Will have a look at others. Don't know about that lithographer, just had a look at the whole lithograph and noted that her whole body looked much better than the head alone, but wasn't happy about pixelation, and thus hesitated to recrop - it is Ok for the whole picture, but not for such details as heads. Materialscientist ( talk) 06:28, 21 October 2011 (UTC) reply
Hi, Materialscientist. Good to see you. You've helped me a lot in the past. I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough. There is no need to turn the first picture into a black and white one. Nor I asked Bartolomé Mitre's photo to be cropped. In the third photo (the man with a little girl), there is clearly an oval circle around the two persons.
So, what I'd like is: First picture (to the left), a newer .png version of it with a translucid background (just as in this photo [5]). I want the same for the third (the one to the right) photo. When I said that i'd like to see all of them "cleaned" and with any noise removed, I did not mean to remove old scratchs typical of daguerreotypes. I meant something like this (before) and this (after). Again, I'm sorry if I might not have been clear enough. Regards, -- Lecen ( talk) 14:51, 21 October 2011 (UTC) reply

Note that I was only able to find three groups: 5,6,7,8,9; 3,4; 10,1,2.
This is the result, I made mini-panos for the small groups as well, but they are not really useful sadly:
  • They should be in order (1 - 10); I took pictures at an angle every 4 paces, with those above seemingly being complete enough. Are there any edges missing? I have more shots that may supply what is missing. Crisco 1492 ( talk) 23:04, 22 October 2011 (UTC) reply
It could be possible that all your shots could help :) Currently there are missing data to generate a full panorama. Aza Toth 23:06, 22 October 2011 (UTC) reply

It's better, but I can only create a 358° panorama, there is missing a bit between images 1,10 and image 9. Also if possible, if you have images showing a bit more below on images 4 and 4a, and eventually below image 6 as well? Aza Toth 23:42, 22 October 2011 (UTC) reply

Also, thanks a lot Azatoth. Crisco 1492 ( talk) 02:26, 23 October 2011 (UTC) reply
I know next to nothing about how to create them other than taking images from a several angles (including straight up and straight down) and processing them in a fashion similar to what you guys have done here. The result is a true 360° spherical view. Wrapping the panorama in a virtual circle reduces the distortion and it's truly the next best thing to being there. As far as I know, Wikipedia doesn't support them in any way. You'll find them in Google Earth. Check out 360cities.net It seems to me that if you're going to go through the effort to do this, why stop at a flat image? A smaller arc panorama (such as this) looks great as a flat image, but cramming a full circle into a long flat image and stopping there seems a little pointless. Personally I'd much prefer a simple series of regular photos. Most of these long warped panoramas look a little hokey (my opinion). JBarta ( talk) 02:52, 23 October 2011 (UTC) reply
  • Perhaps Azatoth or Materialscientist know a bit about it; neither of my laptops handle hug-in well (they crash). I could probably not do it myself on these computers, although it is a good idea methinks. Crisco 1492 ( talk) 04:55, 23 October 2011 (UTC) reply
I know little about wide-angle panoramas. Spherical distortions and perspective will inevitably get in, and thus all presentations are some form of cheating, but they are nice :-). Long flat panoramas lose photographical appeal (poor aspect ratio, artistic composition, levels are inevitably bad because stitching requires enormous dynamic range), but they are encyclopedic because they continuously record "topography" of the place. Materialscientist ( talk) 05:10, 23 October 2011 (UTC) reply
  • I agree about the levels and aspect ratios; at least this is better than the first panorama that I tried to make, at Sebuku (Sumatra) (thanks again for somewhat cleaning that up) Crisco 1492 ( talk) 06:12, 23 October 2011 (UTC) reply

I can live with that. Could clean this other Niihau image?

This can be a nice squared jpg image (with corners cut or restored). Why translucid png? Same applies to File:GuerradoParaguai procissão 1868.png. Note that png is inferior rendering for photographs, and it is less sharp in wikipedia thumbs. Materialscientist ( talk) 00:35, 26 October 2011 (UTC) reply

Done. Sure, just register :-). Seriously, many sites, while offering zooms, give away full resolution by saving the file. Materialscientist ( talk) 03:06, 29 October 2011 (UTC) reply
This is all great, but, it looks like collecting several versions per every image. With my great respect to your work, please do prioritize assignments - frankly, I start hesitating making them a priority in my long backlog. Just an example, you've got two colored versions of File:Portrait of Kaneena, a chief of the Sandwich Islands in the North Pacific.jpg. Why b/w version? Improving resolution is helpful, but is not a primary goal - we add images to the articles as thumbs, and very few are viewed in full resolution. Materialscientist ( talk) 04:52, 30 October 2011 (UTC) reply
Well image are not just for articles in my opinion but I agree if you think it's a waste of your time, you shouldn't then. -- KAVEBEAR ( talk) 05:52, 30 October 2011 (UTC) reply

Where? No. 3 gives the same results (at different nominal resolution) and No. 2 is worse than previous. Materialscientist ( talk) 00:57, 30 October 2011 (UTC) reply
Ok. Can you fix the graininess on No. 2?-- KAVEBEAR ( talk) 01:20, 30 October 2011 (UTC) reply
Quickfixed. Note that reducing the nominal resolution is a wrong way of reducing the graininess. This might trick some thumbnail rendering, but is a transient effect of wikimedia software (or browser, or I don't know what - I haven't seen any improvement when an image was downscaled, except for file size reduction).
