Request: I will use this pic on a TFA blurb for the FA article. Please clean this picture up in any way you can (I realize the size is low). Pull out the photoshop and clean the white specs on the glass away from and in front of the turtle. If possible do something about the reflection towards the left. Plus anthing else you think helps. It is a dramatic pose, with a lot of anatomy EV and almost a comical look to it. But obvious photo flaws (thus needing your help). Please after finishing, also make a cropped additional version (crop some of the wasted space to the top, so I have that as an option (helps with certain text wrap situations). THANKS! The colors in the images are identical. If you place one image on top of the other and switch back and forth between the two, you can see the differences. The watermark disappears, a few spots on his robe disappear, but the colors remain the same. Perhaps you're getting some sort of optical illusion. If you view two images side by side that can happen. I picked three random pixels from the images and compared their RGB values (red-green-blue). If one image was grayer, duller or in any way shaded differently than the other, these values would be (significantly) different between the images. Below are the results...

I have no idea what you guys are seeing. I (again) took a random pixel from the flag (which you claim is a "duller" color). In my version the RGB value of pixel 1244,3700 is 209-37-15. In the latest (June 28) version by MissMJ that same pixel has the exact same RGB value. If the two colors are in fact different, the RGB value would be different, no? It's like suggesting that two glasses of water are of differing temperature, but when you place a thermometer in each they are the same. The obvious conclusion... they are the same. If you were to repeat what I did and examine the RGB values of that same pixel in each image and also find they are the same, I think you would be hard pressed to conclude that the images are different. I've found the issue and its name is color management. When opening your version of the file, I noticed that it shows up with (RGB/8#) after the file name in its Photoshop window, while the original shows up as (RGB/8*). After doing some digging, I've finally figured it out. If I go to assign a color management profile to your version, it's set to "Don't manage this document". On the original version, however, the profile is set to "Adobe RBG (1998)," and switching away from it leads the picture to appear considerably duller, despite having the same RGB values. There are all kinds of profiles I can assign to the picture, each of which makes it more dark, more saturated, more washed out, more whatever, without ever changing a single RGB value in it.

Interesting. A color profile added to the image that may alter the display value of the colors depending on what is displaying it. I loaded the image in GIMP and did indeed see the two different shades if the profile was loaded. Firefox also automatically recognizes and uses the profile and alters the image. And the added profile does actually change the RGB values while it is being displayed. So basically, when I saved the file, I inadvertantly stripped the file of the profile and caused it to display unaltered everywhere. Peachy. I re-did the noise removal as the halftone dots can be got rid of quite nicely using FFT. It could still use some levels/contrast adjustments, I guess. — Quibik ( talk) 15:41, 19 June 2011 (UTC) reply

I would appreciate it when people here on an open democratic platform are more polite and helpful towards each other. Walking around with a stick ordering people how to behave is really not appreciated. @Ganeshrg: Wikipedia isn't able to save the world. Voluntary work is a rare thing, and so it's a gift. The few contributions have a priority list ... You can ask for a gift, not more ... By the way, democracy isn't about "getting dumb cheap labour" or exchanging King Louis XVI with the " guillotine" or exchanging Tsar Nicholas II of Russia with " Lennin/ Stalin" ... This kind of subterfuge makes me sick ... And Wikipedia isn't an "open democratic platform", but a human encyclopedia/ database with some good qualities, some of them are very rare (interwiki links, high resolution images, hyperlinks) ... @Chris: I agree with everything you say but I hope you agree with what I said about the tone a person should use. There are polite ways to say things and impolite way to say the very same things. I wasn't too amused by the confrontational big-brother attitude that the first poster used and I wrote back conveying my annoyance. I also believe that Wikipedia and Wikimedia are the best examples of democracy in fact. You have a right to say what you want - if the majority doesn't like it, your voice is overwritten by others but you can say whatever you like nonetheless. I also believe that if a graphics expert here doesn't have a problem with helping someone with personal images, why should anyone else have a problem? Please tell me, how did you hear what tone I was using? How could you tell I wrote my message with a "confrontational big-brother attitude"? Did I say, "How dare you put personal requests here?! Remove this at once!!!"? No. I was asking simple questions—how is this image useful? what article would it go in?—because I was confused. Maybe this image really was of educational value and I was missing it. Who am I to ask? A volunteer here, trying to figure out which request I should spend my limited time on (as is every graphist here). And I noted that to me this sounded like a request for personal work, and let you know, in case you weren't aware, that requests for retouching work on personal photographs isn't what Graphic Lab is for. If I was mistaken and the image was of educational value, you had a chance to point it out. If not, you could have still said all that you did above—that this is important to you and that you are looking for a graphist to do a personal request—without jumping down my throat and accusing me of trolling. Okay so this might not show up right away because thumbnail previews have intermittently been having major issues, but I evened out the color balance on the images to make them look less like a rainbow when they're next to each other (besides the part that's supposed to look like the rainbow, aka the compounds themselves). This image is a good example of why it's always a good idea for us amateur photographers to snap multiple pictures of whatever you're snapping pictures of. (especially if you're using a camera where all the settings are set to automatic) A few seconds of time or a few feet in either direction might have yielded a better image where the sun glare had less of an effect. Graphist opinion(s): While I would certainly take on the task of giving this image some work, it may be worth waiting for a few days, perhaps a weeks for the Library of Congress to add the map to their digital archive as they may add an even higher-res version. At the moment the image is only available from third-party sources, would be a shame to start work on it only to find a better version being released. Looks great. I've not idea what's possible in terms of restoration, but in certain places where the crease were, it looks a bit smudgier than I'd expect. For instance on the Orlando Ferguson medallion, some texture detail was lost. Likewise, on the right side, there's a dotted circle which stops being circular where the crease was. No idea if this is a big deal with regards to restoration, but I suspect this would get raised in an FPC so if this can be addressed before the FPC, it would probably make things go more smoothly. It's not really lines. But like there is one side that is lighter and one side is darker and it makes it look like there is a line. Like the rectangle going down from their head to the bottom is darker and then their sides are lighter. Have you seen the original for the other one on the Hawaii State Archives...not much better than this one, same size and same damages. If you can't do anything. I disagree that the two originals are about the same. The image above is significantly inferior to the other you mention. Yes, really. From my perspective, this image is of significantly better quality than this one. Of course, anything is possible and certainly there is someone out there talented, skilled and artistic enough to bring the inferior image up to the same level as the superior one... but like I said, realistically, it ain't gonna happen. <Indent>To me, this is all about priorities. Why restoring an image which is rather similar to already restored one ( File:Kingdavidkalakaua dust.jpg)? Take Kalākaua, the target article. I would say File:Kapaakea and Kalakaua.jpg (restoration) and File:Kalakauapainting.jpg (possibly unbalanced color) have higher priority. Are there other originals for these images? (different topic) I got the first image from a pdf version of the book I listed as source which I converted into to the image it is now with no editing since I don't know how to clean up images. It looks like the other one (the painting) resembles paintings located in Iolani Palace. You can ask Iolani Palace, Hawaii State Archives or Bishop Museum. I try to be careful what I alter in an old photo. The moldy noise you mention could just as easily be the texture of a felt hat. At any rate, you and I both hit the photo at about the same time. I simply cropped, greyscaled and removed a couple obvious spots. I thought that was more than sufficient. When I went to upload, I saw someone had done pretty much the same thing, although added what I thought was a little too much contrast enhancement for no particular reason.
