OriginalArthur Onslow, 3rd Earl of Onslow was the owner of a large Napoleonic collection, and it was he who was commissioning this painting from Paul Delaroche, a better painting that will show a more accurate version of this event in a less theatrical and less heroic way, then it was painted by David; a in a bit exaggerated way. He painted Napoleon on a mule, not a white horse - and freezing; in a far more realistic fashion.
Reason
Good scan, interesting painting with a historic background, showing Napoleon sitting on a mule, led by the French mountain guide called Pierre Nicholas Dorsaz in 1800; when crossing the Alps towars his victory in the Battle of Marengo. Otherwise Napoleon was rather fond of cultivating his own image sometimes; and was happy to use art as a political propaganda.
