OriginalEdward Gibbon (1737-94) was an English historian, whose The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire is considered a major historical work of the Enlightenment. "Because of its relative objectivity and heavy use of primary sources, at the time its methodology became a model for [all] later historians."
