Nominator's rationale: Very small category. clearly two names for the same thing. Expatriates in Ireland‎ has 51 subcategories. They are not divided according to time - some were in Ireland when it was governed by Britain and some after 1922. Main category is Category:Irish people, not Republic of Ireland people. Rathfelder ( talk) 13:52, 13 April 2019 (UTC) reply
  • Not sure whether Republic of Ireland is ugly, but I am assuming that WP:IRE-CATS has been established after long discussions and we'd better stick to it. Marcocapelle ( talk) 17:00, 24 April 2019 (UTC) reply
  • Are you sure it applies here? The more generic WP:IRE-IRL guideline explicitely states that "Ireland" should be used for the state where the state forms a major component of the topic (e.g. on articles relating to states, politics or governance), which was the major rationale for the Foreign relations of Ireland CfD and is also the case here for "expatriates". Also, you do not address the fact that a keep result would not establish the stable situation you seem to imply as most expatriates in Ireland categories are currently using "Ireland" for the country, and have for some time until April 2019. Place Clichy ( talk) 17:39, 24 April 2019 (UTC) reply
  • WP:IRE-CATS has specifically been established for categorization so that overrules WP:IRE-IRL in this case. With respect to the 2nd point, an additional nomination is needed indeed. Marcocapelle ( talk) 07:01, 25 April 2019 (UTC) reply

Nominator's rationale: This contains one subcategory: American expatriates in the Kingdom of Great Britain‎, which had one article, about an American who was actually living in Scotland. I dont think a proliferation of subcategories about the various legal forms of what is now the UK is very helpful. The existence of the geographical subcategories of the UK enable us to avoid this. Rathfelder ( talk) 10:53, 13 April 2019 (UTC) reply
  • Query Will the nominator be alerting the Ancient Rome project that it's work is useless given the current Republic of Italy? Laurel Lodged ( talk) 11:04, 13 April 2019 (UTC) reply
  • Ancient Rome was, apart from any other consideration, geographically different from the present Republic of Italy. An approach that is sensible in one context may not work in another. Rathfelder ( talk) 12:39, 13 April 2019 (UTC) reply
  • Delete - Samuel L. Mitchill (removed by Rathfelder) is adequately categorized in Category:American expatriates in Scotland. Oculi ( talk) 12:17, 13 April 2019 (UTC) reply
  • Delete - it's more important for categories to be useful than to be precisely accurate, we don't have separate categories for the different Republics of France. Politically there was rather less difference between GB & UK than between the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire if you're going to go down that route, aside from the differences in territorial extent. Also, this category would end in 1801, when the whole concept of "expats" was rather different to what it is now. Le Deluge ( talk) 08:05, 14 April 2019 (UTC) reply
  • Delete also the empty sub-cat, whose content was presumably moved to Scotland. A rather useless category. Peterkingiron ( talk) 17:31, 14 April 2019 (UTC) reply

Nominator's rationale: merge, we usually do not have century categories for countries that did not exist yet. In the Middle Ages Algeria often belonged to Islamic states centered in current Morocco or Tunisia. The Regency of Algiers, established in 1515, can be regarded as the earliest form of Algeria as a separate country. Marcocapelle ( talk) 06:19, 13 April 2019 (UTC) reply

Nominator's rationale: upmerge, currently contains one subcategory. There may well be some possibility of expansion, but it is unknown if we would be able to decently fill up a whole category. Marcocapelle ( talk) 06:12, 13 April 2019 (UTC) reply
  • Support per nom. Incidentally, there seems to be some inconsistency in the naming conventions of the Category:Cantons of Switzerland: some use "Canton of Foo", others just state "Foo". Nominator's rationale: Per WP:OCAWARD ( WP:NONDEFINING)
The Living Legends of the American Academy of Nursing is an award given by the American Academy of Nursing and doesn't have any corresponding physical museum. Some of the articles do mention the award in the lede but that appears to be the work of a single editor who also created this category. Clicking through the other articles though, this award doesn't seem defining. The contents of the category are already listified here in the main article. - RevelationDirect ( talk) 02:26, 13 April 2019 (UTC) reply

The result of the discussion was: delete. MER-C 17:02, 23 May 2019 (UTC) reply
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:SUBJECTIVECAT, WP:NPOV, and WP:OCAWARD
The Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame can refer to three separate organizations:
  • A. Original Pre-Revolution: 1939-1961 in Havana, inducted a mix of All Cubans, minor, major, Negro league players
  • B. Exile in United States: 1962-1986, 1997-1998 in Miami, focused on Major League players.
  • C. Official Revival: 2014 in Havana, focused on Cuba national baseball team players. Having trouble finding later years.
The Exile and Revival ones both recognize inductees by the Original, but they definitely don't recognize each other. While all the inducted players have great athletic skills, perceived political allegience and emigration decisions also appear to be factors for admission. This Wikipedia category covers the Original and the Official Revival (but not the Exile one) which effectivley is taking a political position. One possible solution would be to split this into three categories but none of the three awards seem particularly defining in the articles and these competing claims by rival organizations are better handled in the article space. The contents of the current category are already listified here in the main article. - RevelationDirect ( talk) 02:25, 13 April 2019 (UTC) reply
