Côte d'Ivoire to Ivory Coast

The result of the discussion was: merge/rename as specified. MER-C 10:08, 20 March 2016 (UTC) reply
Nominator's rationale: Merge/rename. Some nominations opposed at the speedy renaming section (by an apparent single-purpose account). The category tree and article space uses Category:Ivory Coast/ Ivory Coast. These are the only categories that do not (apart from the Olympics ones, since we use the name by which a country competes at the Olympics, even if it doesn't match the WP name). We could debate the merits of the article using either name, but right now, English WP uses "Ivory Coast" as a result of this discussion, and there's no reason for these categories not to conform. Redirects may be created on the alternate form. Good Ol’factory (talk) 23:22, 28 February 2016 (UTC) reply

  • Delete trivial. Carlossuarez46 ( talk) 21:06, 29 February 2016 (UTC) reply
  • Delete Though this is a new category, nominated on the day of its creation, this is an improper grouping of topics. Infertility describes the condition of being unable to reproduce by natural means. There are a variety of causes, but they seem to be mostly biological. Sterilization is a term for medical techniques that intentionally leave a person unable to reproduce and most are permanent. The effect on reproduction is the same but the reasons are worlds apart. Dimadick ( talk) 17:26, 1 March 2016 (UTC) reply
  • Comment -- A category for real people to whom this applied would certainly be NN. However, I can imagine that there might be a novel the main protagonist was incapable of having children and this was a significant issue in the plot. However, if it is still empty, we do not need it. Peterkingiron ( talk) 15:48, 1 March 2016 (UTC) reply

Support, as we usually don't subdivide by historic periods unless we have a parent category to hold the different periods. The result of the discussion was: delete. No need to upmerge, since they are all already in the category tree one way or another. Good Ol’factory (talk) 22:58, 21 March 2016 (UTC) reply
Nominator's rationale: Arab nationalists are ridiculously overcategorized. "Heads of state" were always either military personnel or career politicians. Personally I think most of the subcategories for Arab nationalists are unnecessary. You don't see this level of subcategorization for any other nationalists. Plus, some of these people were heads of government, not heads of state. Charles Essie ( talk) 17:53, 28 February 2016 (UTC) reply
  • Maybe, but some of the Arab heads of state in this category are/were leaders of countries that are not part of the standard territorial definition of the Middle East (such as the Maghreb states). Charles Essie ( talk) 16:45, 1 March 2016 (UTC) reply

Nominator's rationale: rename as figures is a very vague term while actually people are meant. This is a follow-up on this discussion which is still open. The result of the discussion was: merge. There was support to rename the "Novelists from FOO" categories into "Writers from FOO" categories, but the former were not nominated/tagged as part of this discussion. It could be pursued in a follow-up discussion. Good Ol’factory (talk) 22:56, 21 March 2016 (UTC) reply
Nominator's rationale: No other country seems to have "novelists by province/city" subcategories, much less an additional descriptor like "People's Republic of" (presumably to distinguish writers from e.g. the Qing dynasty), so I think this is clearly overcategorization. If anyone thinks that Category:Novelists from Beijing should be further upmerged with Category:Writers from Beijing, I am willing to support that as well.

Also nominate merging the following:

Nominator's rationale: This might make an interesting list and a list would have many advantages (e.g. being able to include a few words of explanation against each entry, being able to include events for which there isn't a standalone article). However, as a way of categorizing it's not as good as the other ways we categorize (e.g. by year, location and type) as those characteristics provide comprehensive categorization and mesh with other categories. We don't, for example, categorize maritime/railway/road/factory accidents by whether they kill any bystanders. That the category was created without any parent categories indicates that the creator doesn't understand wp categorization and hence they may have thought this was the correct way to create a list. Note: this category is currently incomplete ( El Al Flight 1862 being one omission) and isn't precisely defined (e.g. should British Airtours Flight 28M be included?).
