This is the Streets and Highways Code as it existed in 1963, after the renumbering law had passed but before it was implemented. The new number is given for all routes, as well as the current equivalent. Information on amendments is not complete. Several repealed sections are also included.

Route 1 is from a point in Marin County opposite San Francisco to the Oregon State line via Crescent City and the Smith River.
(a) The junction of Route 56 [Route 1] (Funston Approach) and the approach to the Golden Gate Bridge in the Presidio of San Francisco to the international boundary line near Tia Juana via San Diego and National City.
(b) A point on the highway specified in subdivision (a) of this section, approximately two miles west of Brawley, to a point on said highway approximately two and one-half miles southwest of Brawley.

Route 34 is from Route 4 [Route 99] near Arno to Route 23 [Route 89] near Picketts in Hope Valley via Jackson, Pine Grove, Silver Lake and Kirkwood.

Route 35 is from Route 1 [Route 101] near Alton to Route 20 [Route 299] near Douglas City, passing near Mad River and Peanut.

335.5. Notwithstanding any provision of law requiring the expenditure of funds received from the Federal Government for federal aid secondary highways, together with matching funds from the State Highway Fund, upon county roads, the department shall withhold the sum of forty thousand eight hundred forty-seven dollars ($40847) of such federal funds and state matching funds from those required to be allocated for projects upon county roads on the federal aid secondary system in Humboldt County, and shall expend such funds upon that portion of Route 35 in Humboldt County until such portion is constructed to standards required for the federal aid secondary system.
The aggregate of the funds required to be withheld and appropriated by this section shall not exceed the sum of forty thousand eight hundred forty-seven dollars ($40,847). The appropriation made by this section shall be available for expenditure without regard to fiscal years.
If, prior to the effective date of the amendment to this section enacted at the 1959 Regular Session of the Legislature, funds exceeding in the aggregate the sum of forty thousand eight hundred forty-seven dollars ($40,847) have been withheld by the department from allocations for federal aid secondary county road projects in Humboldt County for the purposes of this section, such excess amounts shall be allocated for federal aid secondary county road projects in Humboldt County to the extent such excess amounts have not been expended as of such effective date.

Route 38 is from Route 11 [Route 50] near May's Junction to the Nevada State line near Verdi, Nevada, via Tallac, Emerald Bay, McKinney's, Tahoe City, the Truckee River, Truckee and the Truckee River Canyon.
(a) Route 13 [Route 108] to Route 23 [Route 395] near Mono Lake via Big Oak Flat and Buck Meadows. That portion of Route 40 lying within the boundaries of Yosemite National Park is not a state highway.

Route 42 is from Route 5 [Route 17] near Los Gatos to Governor's Camp in California Redwood Park via Saratoga Gap and along the ridge between the San Lorenzo and Pescadero Creeks.

Route 43 is from Newport Beach to Route 31 [Route 15] near Victorville, via Santa Ana Canyon, San Bernardino, Waterman Canyon, Big Bear Lake and Baldwin Lake. Route 43 includes a highway around Big Bear Lake.

Route 46 is from a point on Route 3 [Route 5] near Klamath River Bridge to Route 1 [Route 101]. Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 81 of this code, the department may maintain a traversable highway located in portions of the area between the termini of and approximately on this route even though the highway is not continuous.
(c) State highway near southerly end of Marin Peninsula to Route 1 [Route 101] near Fernbridge via the coast route through Jenner, Westport and Ferndale, including lateral connection with Route 1 [Route 101] near Leggett Valley.
356.5. The commission and the department are expressly authorized to abandon and to relocate any portion or portions of route 56 as now established and laid out between the intersection of Route 56 and Route 55 south of San Francisco and the town of Farallon City, in San Mateo County, and to take any and all action necessary for such abandonment and relocation. Such abandonment may be effected prior to relocation and pending relocation the commission may adopt and maintain any traversable road around the portion or portions so abandoned.

Route 57 is from Route 2 [Route 101] near Santa Maria to Route 23 [Route 14] near Freeman, via Bakersfield and Walker Pass.

Route 58 is from Route 2 [Route 101] near Santa Margarita to the Arizona State line near Topock, Arizona, via Bakersfield, Mojave, Barstow, and Needles, together with an extension from a point on such Route 58 near Needles easterly by the most direct and practicable route to the Arizona-California line at the Colorado River, including a bridge over and across said river, to be constructed, owned, operated, and maintained jointly with the State of Arizona.
(c) Mecca via Blythe to the Arizona state line at the Colorado River, and includes that portion of the Colorado River highway bridge (near Ehrenburg, Arizona) which is within the State of California. The department may contract with the State of Arizona, for and on behalf of the State of California, for the maintenance of such bridge.
(a) Auburn to Route 13 [Route 108] near Sonora via the vicinity of Placerville, Diamond Springs, and El Dorado; and via Jackson, San Andreas, and Angels.
374.
Route 74 is from Route 6 [Route 121] near Napa to Route 7 [Route 80] near Cordelia via Vallejo and Benicia including a connection from Vallejo to Route 7 [Route 80] near the Carquinez Bridge.
(b) That portion of Route 80 specified in subdivision (a) in this section to Route 151 [Route 150] near Ventura-Santa Barbara county line via Foothill Road.

Route 110 is from Route 75 [Route 4] near Brentwood to Route 65 [Route 49] via Modesto, including a connection to Route 238 [Route 5] southwest of Vernalis.
(a) Route 4 [Route 99] near Tipton to Route 31 [Route 15] near Baker via the vicinity of Porterville, Camp Nelson, Olancha, Death Valley, and Death Valley Junction.
Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 89 of Chapter 1062, Statutes of 1959, the department shall proceed with the construction of the unconstructed portion of said route described in subdivision (a) between the junction of Route 187 and the Imperial-Riverside county line with the lowest practical cost for a hard surfaced road and as an interim project pending the later construction of the route to proper limited access standards; provided, that prior thereto the County of Imperial enters into a co-operative agreement with the department wherein the county agrees to maintain the road between the Junction of Route 187 and the Imperial-Riverside county line until a limited access highway is constructed by the department between said points. Upon the completion of construction of said interim road, and pursuant to said agreement, the county shall assume jurisdiction and all responsibilities of maintenance for the period above provided. The road shall be known and designated as the "Ben Hulse Highway."

Route 147 is from Route 2 [Route 101] near Arroyo Grande to Route 2 [Route 101] near San Luis Obispo.

Route 156 is from Route 60 [Route 1] near Topanga Beach but north of the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Route 60 [Route 1] to Route 9 [Route 118] at or near Chatsworth.

Route 163 is from Route 60 [Route 1] at a point near Colorado Avenue in Santa Monica to Route 173 [Route 10] via Pacific Avenue and Venice Boulevard; provided that prior to the construction of any portion of this highway the City of Los Angeles shall furnish to the State of California without charge all right-of-way necessary for that portion and the City of Los Angeles and the County of Los Angeles shall enter into a co-operative agreement with the department wherein said city and county agree to pay one-half the cost of plans and construction.

Route 167 is from Route 165 [Route 110] in San Pedro to Route 9 [Route 210] in Pasadena via Long Beach, and including a bridge, with at least four lanes, from San Pedro at or near Boschke Slough to Terminal Island.

Route 213 is from a point on Route 4 near the northerly city limits of San Fernando to a point on Route 4 near the southerly city limits of San Fernando, approximately paralleling but not coinciding with Route 4.
This route will cease to be a state highway when the commission relinquishes that portion of the present Route 4 in the City of San Fernando upon the relocation of Route 4 outside of the City of Fernando.

Route 214 is from Route 239 [Route 280] near Woodside to Route 68 [Route 101] at the Harbor Boulevard Interchange in Redwood City.

Route 224 is from a point on Route 2 [Route 101] near the intersection of Lombard Street and Van Ness Avenue to the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge approach in San Francisco.
(a) Route 105 [Route 185] in San Leandro to Route 69 [Route 880] in Oakland near Seventh and Harrison Streets via Alameda and the vicinity of the Oakland International Airport.
526.1. Upon the completion of the additional subterranean tube between the Cities of Oakland and Alameda, in the vicinity of Webster Street, to be used in connection with the Posey Tube, both of which tubes are included in the description of Route 226, the department may by executive order, rule or regulation, designate both of said tubes, and the approaches leading to or from the nearest state highway or city street, as one-way highways, and thereafter restrict said tubes and approaches to one-way traffic, proceeding in opposite directions as to each other. Upon the placing of signs notifying the public of such restrictions, any person who willfully fails to observe such sign is guilty of a misdemeanor.
526.2. Because of the statewide interest in navigation, the State will hold and save the United States of America free and harmless from liability for damages to the parallel tubes between the Cities of Oakland and Alameda included in the description of Route 226 due to the initial dredging work and subsequent maintenance dredging in an area within 50 feet of said tubes in connection with the deepening of the Oakland Estuary by the Corps of Engineers of the United States Army and the Director of Finance shall execute an agreement so to do with the proper representatives of the United States of America.

Route 227 is a connection between Route 75 [Route 24] near Lake Temescal in Oakland and Route 5 [Route 580].
544.
Route 231 is hereby added to the State Highway System to run from Route 165 [Route 110] in San Pedro to Route 167 [Route 710] in Long Beach, via the mainland portion of Long Beach Outer Harbor and Terminal Island, subject to the following conditions:
1. Except as provided in paragraph numbered 2, no expenditure shall be made from state highway funds for the acquisition of rights of way for or construction, improvement or maintenance of said highway until the following conditions have been met:
(a) The Federal Government shall have made available all funds necessary for the construction of said route, other than funds provided under paragraph 2.
(b) The Federal Government and the Cities of Los Angeles and Long Beach shall have granted a sufficient and adequate right of way without cost to the State of California for that portion of said route traversing lands owned or controlled by each of them.
(c) The authorized representatives of the Cities of Long Beach and Los Angeles and of the appropriate agency of the Federal Government shall have approved the proposed alignment and the proposed location of all major structures on the route submitted by the State Department of Public Works.
2. Any city or county may contribute to, and the California Highway Commission may allocate moneys from the State Highway Fund for the improvement of portions of Route 231 on the mainland when such improvement is found necessary to complete an integrated system of freeways between San Pedro, Long Beach and the Civic Center in the City of Los Angeles.
3. If funds from sources other than state highway funds have not been made available for the construction of all portions of said Route 231 that are not on the mainland prior to January 15, 1953, said Route 231 shall on that date cease to be a state highway and this section shall have no further force or effect.
546.
Route 234 is hereby added to the State Highway System to run from the Nevada state line across the Sierra Nevada Mountains into the San Francisco Bay Area on a route to be selected by the California Highway Commission, which route may include all or portions of any existing state highway route or routes. The commission, in determining said route, shall consider military necessities and recommendations of appropriate federal authorities.
The commission shall allocate from time to time as federal funds, other than regular federal aid apportionments, are made available as required in this section from the State Highway Fund the sum of twenty million dollars ($20,000,000), for the construction of said route. Such money shall be made available in equal parts in the five fiscal years next succeeding the effective date of this section to the extent that such federal funds are available for matching purposes in each of such years. The allocation of money provided for in this section shall be made out of moneys contained in the State Highway Fund available for construction of state highways in County Group No. 1, but which is not subject to Section 188.4 of this code; and expenditures from such allocation shall be credited against the expenditure required to be made pursuant to Section 188.4 in the counties in which the route provided for in this section lies until June 30, 1962.
556.
Route 236 is from a point northwest of the City of Santa Barbara on Route 2 [Route 101] to the campus of the University of California at Santa Barbara, Goleta Campus.
The Commission shall allocate from the State Highway Fund the necessary funds for the construction of said route. The allocation of money provided for in this section shall be made out of moneys contained in the State Highway Fund available for construction of state highways in County Group No. 2, but which is not subject to Section 188.4; and expenditures from such allocation shall be credited against the expenditures required to be made pursuant to Section 188.4 in Santa Barbara County until June 30, 1963.
This route shall be a memorial to the late Senator Clarence C. Ward of Santa Barbara County and shall hereafter be known as Clarence Ward Memorial Boulevard.
557.
Route 237 is Junípero Serra Boulevard as it exists and as it was constructed by Joint Highway District No. 10 from its junction with State Highway Route No. 56 [John Daly Boulevard] in Daly City, to the present terminus of said highway in the City of San Bruno.
Upon the effective date of this section, the Joint Highway District No. 10 shall be dissolved in accordance with the provisions of Chapter 20 of Part 1 of Division 16 of the Streets and Highways Code, and all property, assets, and liabilities of said district shall become the property of the State.

Route 238 is hereby added to the State Highway System, to extend from a point on Route 4 [Route 99] south of Bakersfield to a point on Route 7 [Route 113] near Woodland, on a route along the westerly side of the San Joaquín Valley to be selected by the California Highway Commission, which route may include all or portions of any existing state highway route or routes.

Route 240 is hereby added to the State Highway System, to extend from Route 4 [Route 5] near Glendale to Route 26 [Route 10] near the east boundary of Los Angeles County, on a route to be selected by the California Highway Commission, which route may include all or portions of any existing state highway route or routes.

Route 249 is from Route 10 [Route 198] near Exeter to Route 17 [Route 80] near Roseville on a route along the easterly side of the San Joaquín Valley to be selected by the California Highway Commission, which route may include all or portions of any existing state highway route or routes.
(c) Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 89 of Chapter 1062 of the Statutes of 1959, construction of all or any portion of Route 253 may be commenced at any time, if the City and County of San Francisco has conveyed or does convey to the State of California, without charge, all real property presently acquired by it for the construction of such route or portion thereof.

Route 287 is from the junction of Routes 5 [Route 17] and 56 [Route 1] via the beach area in Santa Cruz to Route 56 [Route 1] west of the San Lorenzo River.

Route 289 is easterly of the Bayshore Freeway from San Jose to the highway to the highway [Route 230] described in subdivision (a) of Section 553.1, the Hunters Point Freeway.

Route 291 is from Route 158 [Route 405] via Western Avenue to 25th Street in San Pedro.
The commission may allocate from the State Highway Fund the necessary funds for the construction of all or any portion of said route when the County of Los Angeles and the Cities of Los Angeles and Torrance have entered into a co-operative agreement with the department wherein the said cities and county shall furnish to the state of California without charge all right-of-way necessary and agree to pay one-half the cost of plans and construction.

Route 292 is from Route 68 [Route 101] in the vicinity of Guadalupe River to Route 114 [Route 85] in the vicinity of Pearl Avenue.
Route 292 shall be added to the state highway system at the time the City of San Jose and the County of Santa Clara have acquired all rights-of-way necessary to construct a freeway on this route to state freeway standards and have conveyed said rights-of-way to the State without charge; provided, that the commission and the department may take all steps necessary to locate and design said freeway or any portion thereof prior to the time it is added to the state highway system.

Route 296 is the Avenue of the Giants, comprising a portion of the former Redwood Highway through and connecting a number of state parks, from Route 1 near the Sylvandale interchange to Route 1 near the Redcrest interchange.
