Portal:Areas of mathematics

Portal:Areas of mathematics ( | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

We have a Portal:Mathematics, and we have portals on 7 of the 9 "areas of mathematics" (as defined in the navbox). Having a portal for this intermediate level as well seems like serious overkill. Fram ( talk) 12:22, 26 March 2019 (UTC) reply

  • Delete: There is no use to have a portal that does not contains any information that is not easily accessible from the article of the same name. When readers access to this portal, the immediate information that they get is the beginning of the article of the same name, and the beginning of a randomly chosen article whose name is not given. Looking a little nearer to the bottom of the portal, one sees, in the field "Did you know" what is probably the worse sentence ever written by John von Neumann, who could not imagine the high importance for computer science of pseudorandom number generators. As mathematically competent editors cannot fix this kind of bugs, this kind of portal must be deleted. Here it is worth to complete the cited von Neumann's sentence as "anyone who considers [replacing human brain by] arithmetical methods of producing random digits is, of course, in a state of sin". • Keep: Adds value through standardization, follows Mathematics Subject Classification, and (so far) excludes wannabe Geometric algebra. — Rgdboer ( talk) 03:29, 27 March 2019 (UTC) reply
Compare to the article(s) on the topic? Legacypac ( talk) 16:57, 27 March 2019 (UTC) reply
  • Redirect to Portal:Mathematics as an overly narrow subtopic of the aforementioned portal. —  pythoncoder  ( talk |  contribs) 20:55, 27 March 2019 (UTC) reply
  • Strong Delete - Since there already was a Portal:Mathematics, the creation of this one was pointless, unless it was pointy. Even more clearly than most, created only because creating portals was fun. Oppose any close with a Redirect or Merge, simply in order to express disapproval of this one. • portal redirects are not used like article redirects. They are mainly for search. No one will search this title. No redirect as someone will just restore the useless portal by reversing the redirect. Legacypac ( talk) 06:01, 1 April 2019 (UTC) reply
