logo for a residential college at the University of Queensland, dubious own work claim. Unclear which year this was published/first used, so may still be copyrighted. Does not qualify for fair use as currently used. FASTILY 08:56, 10 March 2023 (UTC) reply

Keep. Yes, it is similar to this logo (a larger version of which is on Commons currently). However, when it comes to heraldic symbols, it is perfectly OK under U.S. law to re-create a symbol based off of its text description alone. A text description of the shield that specifies that the southern cross spanning left-to-right across the top two quadrants with a blue background, a book in the bottom-left quadrant atop a red background, and a left-facing red lion salient atop a yellow background in the bottom right, could easily have led to this being an original creation based off of a text description. The file on Commons is more problematic (we can't copy implementations of text-based coats of arms; we can only re-create them ourselves from scratch), but I do think that it's reasonable to conclude that this specific heraldic shield is OK to host on EnWiki. — Red-tailed hawk  (nest) 01:04, 11 March 2023 (UTC) reply
And, for what it's worth, the uploader specified that this was a Self Made redraw, so this does appear to have been created legitimately. — Red-tailed hawk  (nest) 01:08, 11 March 2023 (UTC) reply
That doesn't address the fact that this could still be a derivative of non-free content. As I said above, we'll need to know the year this was published/first used. - FASTILY 04:03, 12 March 2023 (UTC) reply
The arms were granted to Emmanuel College in 1912, the same time that UQ received its arms. [1] -- 65.92.244.151 ( talk) 04:44, 17 March 2023 (UTC) reply

No freedom of panorama for 3D artworks in the United States. Copy on Commons was deleted. Only used in user space. Ixfd64 ( talk) 19:27, 10 March 2023 (UTC) reply

Comment. There is no FOP for 3D art in the USA (nor for 2D art), even if that art is in a public space. However, the museum was founded in 1982; there were still copyright formalities in effect in the United States at that time, such as publishing a copyright notice with the work. Do we have the date for when this sculpture was created? If not, we have to delete on a precautionary basis, but this could be kept if this was a sculpture created around the time of the museum's opening. — Red-tailed hawk  (nest) 00:47, 11 March 2023 (UTC) reply

I'm pretty sure that this would be below the threshold of originality in the United States, so I'm bringing it here for discussion as to whether this needs to actually be labeled as non-free rather than as {{ PD-textlogo}}. — Red-tailed hawk  (nest) 22:14, 10 March 2023 (UTC) reply

This is an extremely simple title card, compose of a simple background and simple text. I think this is below the threshold of originality in the United States, so I'd advocate for relabeling this as "public domain" rather than making a fair use claim. — Red-tailed hawk  (nest) 22:59, 10 March 2023 (UTC) reply

I thought this rule applies only for monochromatic images (black text white images and vice versa). But here we have white text and dark blue background. Nevertheless, is it eligible for moving to Commons? And the image can be replaced with a high res version? Kailash29792 (talk) 02:04, 11 March 2023 (UTC) reply

It may depend on the country, though my understanding is that we generally treat simple text logos per the U.S. rules (color doesn't matter). — Red-tailed hawk  (nest) 00:52, 12 March 2023 (UTC) reply
We are not using any of the pics suggested by DaxServer since they are audio covers and the third link is simply the movie on Sun NXT ( screenshoting is impossible since they are using advanced technology). This appears to be a simple textlogo, meaning that it is well-under the threshold of originality in the United States. As such, while it may warrant being kept locally rather than on Commons due to difference in US and UK TOO, I do think that we should give it the {{ PD-textlogo}} tag instead of a non-free tag. — Red-tailed hawk  (nest) 23:18, 10 March 2023 (UTC) reply

I believe that this is a very clear {{ PD-textlogo}} that should be moved to Commons and deleted on EnWiki. There is a {{ keep local}} tag on the page that was placed by the original uploader, so I am bringing this to FfD in order to gain consensus to move this photo to Commons and delete it on EnWiki. — Red-tailed hawk  (nest) 23:32, 10 March 2023 (UTC) reply

@ Red-tailed hawk It's not necessary to delete the local copy, you're more than welcome to withdraw this and use ImportFile (Export to Commons) to make a copy for Commons. If you're not familiar with KeepLocal you should probably familiarize yourself with it before nominating files tagged as such. But in case it isn't clear, I Oppose deleting the local copy, nothing is stopping you from using the file on Commons. — Locke Coletc 03:16, 11 March 2023 (UTC) reply
Can you explain the rationale for keeping it local? My understanding is that we generally move eligible things to Commons unless they're about to be a picture on the main page. — Red-tailed hawk  (nest) 03:41, 11 March 2023 (UTC) reply
@ Red-tailed hawk Can you explain why it should be deleted? What is being prevented by keeping the file? — Locke Coletc 04:10, 11 March 2023 (UTC) reply
What is prevented by keeping the file would be having updates be made in the centralized repository of Commons and then automatically coming down to EnWiki. Uploads would have to be duplicated if tweaks are made. I'm genuinely asking for help understanding the guidance here; I'm admittedly not super familiar with {{ KeepLocal}}, so if you could help spell out the cases where using it is appropriate (or point me to a page that does), that would help me going forward when looking at these sorts of images. — Red-tailed hawk  (nest) 04:14, 11 March 2023 (UTC) reply
@ Red-tailed hawk If genuine improvements are made, they can also be uploaded here. However, I generally find Commons to be more trouble than it's worth, and I've seen where files I uploaded (for example) as fair-use were moved to Commons, then some time later deleted, and I lost my work. I'd much rather have the files remain locally, as I do for all uploads to the English Wikipedia, so I can be notified of potential issues directly, and be more likely to address them. Nominating a file marked as KeepLocal as very hostile to the uploader, and if you'd like to read the history you can see Template talk:Keep local. — Locke Coletc 04:31, 11 March 2023 (UTC) reply
I was unaware that this was something people could just put on a file for any (or no reason). However, as that appears to be the case, consider this nom withdrawn. — Red-tailed hawk  (nest) 05:13, 11 March 2023 (UTC) reply
