Automatic, Supervised, or Manual: Automatic
Programming language(s): Perl
Source code available: User:AnomieBOT/source/tasks/POTDPageCreator.pm
Function overview: Create Template:POTD protected/YYYY-MM-DD two days before the corresponding date, in time for it to be transcluded onto WP:Main Page/Tomorrow.
Links to relevant discussions (where appropriate): Wikipedia talk:Picture of the day#Why don't we have a bot create the protected version?
Edit period(s): Daily
Estimated number of pages affected: 1 per day
Exclusion compliant (Y/N): Yes
Already has a bot flag (Y/N): Yes
Function details: The bot will create the daily POTD protected template, by copying the corresponding Template:POTD/YYYY-MM-DD and replacing the first line as described at Wikipedia:Picture of the day/Guidelines#Protected version. In case human assistance is needed, the bot will post to Wikipedia talk:Picture of the day for help.
It turns out that the POTD protected templates are only protected by cascading from the main page (and the "tomorrow's main page" page), so AnomieBOT should be able to handle it as long as it does it before it gets transcluded there. Anomie ⚔ 02:42, 29 January 2017 (UTC) reply
