I just saw you message to Ukrained. I was surprised the first time I encountered this one as well, but he's right; the use in English has shifted, and the definitive article is now omitted. Welcome to Wikipedia.

As happens for many things in real life, not everything is absolutely cut and dried with regard to "excommunicate" and "archbishop". But we can certainly continue to speak of Marcel Lefebvre as an archbishop. A priest remains a priest, even if he is excommunicated. And an archbishop remains an archbishop. Internal Troops

Hi there! Thanks for volunteering to help! Actually, you can help on Internal Troops (and some other pages I hope) without your knowledge of local languages. What I have in mind is something theoretical :). You see, we lack a definition, a term, a classification there. I mean the subject (the troops) is described pretty well for now. But WHAT are those troops in military/legal terms: a gendarmerie? A military police (which I doubt)? A special kind of civil police? What about some "motorized rifle" (a term mentioned deep in the article by one of the authors)? So why don't we develop this issue? William Alexander Percy

Hi Joe, thanks for writing. I understand your concern, though you are mistaken on a couple counts. Number one, the user name is William Armstrong Percy, not William Alexander Percy. William Armstrong Percy is a cousin of William Alexander Percy, who was a successful southern writer in the earlier part of the twentieth century. He died in 1942.

Secondly, the person actually writing to is not William Armstrong Percy. My name is Aidan; I am a writer's assistant to Dr. Percy, part of which entails work on wikipedia, particularly in regards to his family, one of the south's most prominent families in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Dr. Percy has a wikipedia account, which I often use. If it would make you more comfortable, I'm happy to edit these articles under my own account name, so as to avoid any confusion.

You should know that there is an article up about Dr. Percy, at William Armstrong Percy, III, and I agree that it is bad form to have posted it under his name. However, the work is mine; I simply forgot under whose account I was editing. I will repost it under my own account. My sincerest apologies for the confusion. I didn't exactly understand your last message; it sounded like you were being a little inimical about grammar and such, but I'm assuming that I simply read it incorrectly.

Furthermore, the outing article seems perfectly legitimate. Dr. Percy has written one of the three major books on outing, and in writing that article, we not only worked from his book, but from the other two important contributions - the Signorile book and the Larry Gross book - so that the article would be balanced and offer due credit to all relevant parties. improper speedy tags

Please use appropriate tags. I know that to the admins they just want to know to speedy it, but to someone creating their first article it is a horrible affront. If you were twelve and heard there was a place online where you anyone could contribute and you wrote an article on yourself, only to have it called "nonsense" just seconds after creating it, YOU WOULD CRY or at the very least never want to have anything to do with the project. We have some very young (i.e. 13 or 14) admins here so young contributors are valuable as well. We have more descriptive templates than {{ d}} for a reason. If you can't be bothered to use more descriptive tags properly, than please use {{ d}}, but please don't tag incorrectly, especially with {{deletebecause|nonsense.}}. Sorry for the strong response, but I've been personally involved with some new contributors who have been bitten to the point that they left. You are doing good and necessary work as a NP patroller. As you seem to have made this the bulk of your contributions to the wiki, I advise you to take a look at WP:CSD. Each criteria has its own abbreviated template which you can use. Most have both an extra short and a medium short, e.g. {{ db-a7}} and {{ db-bio}} for articles about people or clubs that don't make a claim of notability. There is also {{ db-band}} for non-notable band articles. Two more that you will often have use for are {{ db-a6}} or {{ db-attack}} (articles created primarily to attack the subject) and {{ db-a1}} (a catch all for extremely short articles that don't give any meaningful content or context). Mediation

Hey, I saw you added a few cases for mediation, thats good but you did do it slightly wrong (dont worry the complete process isn't clear). On the main page you just need the links to the mediation subpage (it is just a pointer) and no information. Then you follow the link (for example for your neni case: Wikipedia:Mediation_Cabal/Cases/2006-06-08_neni) and paste this into the edit window: {{subst:medcab2}} Then hit save and the template will appear - you can then fill in this template wit hthe relevant info etc. for the case. CSD categories and templates

Joe, you might check out Wikipedia:Criteria_for_speedy_deletion, particularly the section on deletion templates. Generally, they recommend that {{delete}} not be used. Try {{db|''reason''}} instead if you don't want to memorize all the templates (though memorizing them does make it a little easier. Speedy delete tagging of pages

Hi, I see you've tagged a lot of pages with speedy delete tags. To make the life of admins easier, can you please either give a bit more info about why the page should be deleted, rather than simply 'notability'. Notability per se is not a reason for deletion, but may bring the article into one of the categories for speedy delete. Please read WP:CSD carefully and use the appropriate reasoning from there. On the speedy tag - info on Smith is currently monopolizing the economic democracy page, and I wanted to create a new home for it (as I suspect that phrase is by no means unique to Smith). It looks like Smith is some sort of cranky anti-corporate type, but his books are on Amazon, the IED is registered with the IRS, and his name popped up as giving presentations at various conferences, so he's likely going to squeak by the notability criteria. Let me move the stuff from the other article this evening, and you can remove the speedy tag at that time if you like. Actually, it looks like economic democracy may have been a redlink that User:Robbjedi tried to clean up, but only did enough research to find the Smith stuff. Merge Tag

I think if you were at all familiar with the miniseries From the Earth to the Moon (HBO) you would understand why the cast list is so big and why recommending the list be merged with the article makes no sense, especially since you tagged it only 5 minutes or so after I moved it from the main article to begin with. Somerled of the Isles

You are absolutely right Rex Insularum would translate as King not Lord of the Isles. In fact both titles are completely out of place-I have never come across the designation Rex Insularum-which seems to be a pure invention here-and the title Lord of the Isles-Dominus Insularum-does not appear until the fourteenth century. Somerled was known to his Gaelic speaking contemporaries as ri Innse Gall-which translates as King of the Hebrides. I've made the necessary changes on the Somerled page. In general I would say to to you-on the assumption that you have an interest in aspects of Scottish history-always seek corroboration of the information uncovered. Thanks for your message. The title Dominus Insularum-Lord of the Isles-was in fact assumed in 1336 by John MacDonald of Islay in a letter to Edward III, who, amongst other titles, was also known as Dominus Hibernie-Lord of Ireland. In this he was seeking confirmation of a land grant from Edward Balliol, who was trying to establish himself as King of Scotland with the help of the English. He could not style himself as 'king' because this would be a challenge to the accepted order of things. But Lord of the Isles-poetic or not-was still something fairly significant, greater than any earl or duke, and a companion of kings. Rcpaterson 00:25, 12 June 2006 (UTC) reply

You can also merge and move pages without an AfD nomination (in case you don't know). However, if the redirect, merge or move might be controversial, it is best to ask if there are any objections on the talk page first.

There was another problem with the nomination. An AfD subpage was not created. After putting the first AfD template ({{subst:afd1}} on an article and saving, you will see a red link to create an AfD subpage. You'll need to add some code and your reasoning for deletion to this page and then save it (the code is at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion#How to list pages for deletion). Please consider using the "Show preview" button

I came accross your edits to a new of new articles, and you seem to make a large number of small edits in the space of a few minutes, frequently you back out the edit almost instantly or make a typo in the edit and then make another typo. The preview button lets you check your changes (and make sure categories and stub types exist) - before they are commited to the article history. Everyone makes mistakes, but having a large number of edits in the article history makes it confusing to review peoples changes (since a simple diff reveals nothing). Anyway. Good luck. It reminds me of a Monty Python skit, truthfully. Although the article is balanced, paradoxically, as far as POV towards the existence of the shredder, sensationalism is also a form of POV imbalance. Personally I suspect something like that existed, but it was more the sort of sadism practiced by Uday Husseisn and that it didnt exist at Abu Gharib. AG, incidentally, bothers me, because it is clearly a historical prison as well as a political one, almost like Sing-Sing. Making AG about the scandals is rather like making the article on Sing-Sing about the Sacco and Venzetti (sp) trial. Hi again: as I am sure you know, HM Government and the US Government were hardly on speaking terms for many years after the War of 1812, which, in my opinion, was a result of significant idiocy on the part of both Governments. My data on Erickson and Monitor dates from some time after the war, when tempers had cooled and data was available. Re Michelangelo the Artist- an Appraisal

Hi Valentinejoesmith.

I'm Amandajm. I wrote that page as part of Michelangelo's biographical page, but it was a bit detailed- so the technical stuff got moved to one place and the Appraisal got a page on its own.

When I moved it, I inadvertently left the references behind. I have now pasted the references in. You will notice that several sources have been cited in small letters within the text itself, as well.

There is a sistine chapel ceiling page, but what I have written doesn't belong there as it covers three of the four major works,not just the ceiling, including the David and I will probably include something on the Pieta.

I think that there is a place for critical appraisal within an encylclopedia as large as this one. What is really being looked at in some depth here is the Theology behind the works of art. Without a grasp on the Christian thinking of the time, (the two major strands of it,) it is difficult to understand the various works.

Just to put you in the picture, I've been an art historian/teacher for forty years. i'd be obliged if you don't encourage people to chop it about until it's finished. It's easy to make nonsense out of something and then it's no use to anyone.

Thanks for your prompt reply V.Joe. I'll incorporate the main points into other articles. Right now I need help. Whoever wrote the article on Sistine Chapel ceiling made a serious error in describing the order of the paintings. The order has conceptual and philosophical ramifications. So it really matters, apart from being simply innaccurate.

Problem- the previous writer did a nice little diagram to support the description and of course it is wrong also. You can't see the door or altar in the beautiful pic of the ceiling, and he has located them at the wrong ends. I need someone who knows how to edit diagrams to reverse the words altar and door (main door, I think it might say). Should probably read entrance. There are actually a couple of smaller doors, but only one main entrance.

I'll hhave to learn how to do diagrams, but I'm terribly experienced at this sort of thing and people have to keep telling me things.

I think that the article contains altogether too much original research. I've got a very good knowledge of Michelangelo, but I have been a teacher rather than a writer and haven't bothered to publish. Which means that I can't cite my own work as having authority. (I've been studying and talking about and teaching about Michelangelo for about 50 years). So I think we ought to cut the content and I'll rewrite it in a form that constitut fact. Thanks for having a look at the diagram. I found out who made it, and I'v sent him a message.

I saw those. I reverted them, along with a picture (that wasn't his) of Venom. I can't see the picture at work, but I know what the original picture was before it was changed. If the picture that is currently there (because I saw that you reverted the picture back) is over a "literal" Venom, then it cannot be used under fair use criteria, or any other criteria. All images of the character "Venom" (not Topher Grace) have been removed from circulation by the request of Sony. Any images that are being used are being used illegal under copyright violation; this includes personal screencaptures from the trailer that was shown at the ComicCon. This is because the trailer shown at the ComicCon wasn't officially released and was stolen via a camera phone. If the images isn't of Topher Grace then it will need to be removed. Deletion Request

Hi - it appears that Crzrussian ( talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA) decided that the article didn't meet A7 (non notability) in such a way as to allow for speedy deletion. He did, however, put a prod tag on - 5 days from now, the article may be deleted. I'm afarind I can't go around this and delete it until the five days sre up, when I can make a proper decision. My edit was merely to remove the hangon request, which was putting the page into a category in which it didn't need to be! Some of these cricket club articles do look a bit obscure but on WP:CRIC we've decided, after a lot of debate, that for England and Wales at least clubs at the highest level of amateur cricket are notable enough for an article, though the articles will probably never be long. Zombie Pub Crawl

Hi Joe,

First, I am not a promoter (the event, incidentally is always free, and not really commercial--although I have never attended it). I created this page because I have read about this event for years, and it seems unbelievable that this cult event has no wikipedia page yet. The event has attained cult status in a city of several million people, and is known regionally and elsewhere to many more; but beyond that, it has played at least a partial role in inspiring similar pop cultural events in other cities nationwide (see article links). That alone should make it notable enough. Just because it is of more interest to people in or near Minnesota than to others doesn't detract from the fact that it is of some (albeit small) relevance and interest in popular culture nationally.

Perhaps more importantly, it meets the criteria of notability laid out in the guidelines since it is mentioned in multiple reliable sources, some of which I have already included in the article (I haven't yet had time to add more, I just wanted to get the article started, not spend my weekend defending it). This event has been explored in articles in at least 3 or 4 significant newspapers, a number of web publications, and who knows how many blogs. It is related to, though distinct from the larger Zombie Walk article--which seems to have been deemed notable enough. As I say, even if you don't think it is sufficiently notable (which for the reasons I just stated, I would argue it is) this article needs to stay for at least six months to a year so it can be discovered by other editors, have time to establish itself and be improved by other editors. Putting new articles such as this one of a more local flavor--but which still have some other significance--in front of a firing squad before they get a chance to become established and allow editors to further illuminate their relevance is a very slippery slope.

Summary: The article is of an small but nonetheless real importance local to regional (arguably national) areas of pop culture. It meets notability criteria. The subject has grown organically into a sufficient pop cultural relevance with at least tenuous national influence. To delete such an article right of the bat, or put it on automatic deletion review track when it has met notability and other criteria is a bad idea. Cheers. the argonauts(band)

Hey there. I requested an article on the Argonauts a while ago to no avail, so thought i'd create one. Obviously this is my first time so it's going to be a bit ropey, but I want to work on it and get it right, so please don't delete it. The band was recently the subtest of a bbc radio programme where they were interviewed for 25 mins and played 4 songs so I think this qualifies their notability?

Dead kids are not 'porno'

V.Joe, your comments "(images of dead Palestinian children) can certainly be a form of pornography and often are to people who are members of death-cults, neo-nazi organizations and others who we might find unpleasant. To me, Hamas is all three" are highly offensive and wholly inappropriate. Consider a substitution of the word "Jewish" for "Palestinian" and "Israel" for Hamas" and tell me what sort of reaction you would expect. Roma, You did not politely ask me (and WanderSage, and Tundra Buggy)to change or strike-out our comments. You demanded it. I don't do well with demands. And I dislike your implied threat.
Unfortunately, the nature of Hamas is a death-cult, and the use by largely (but not completely) Muslim youths unhappy with their lives in both Muslim countries and non-Muslim country to compare the poverty they might face in Egypt and the discrimination (quite real) in France or Sweden. This is a form of pornography as I understand it. (Namely, literature or images to encourage fantasies.) Hamas does not belong to the level of Fatah or even the Muslim Brotherhood (alternatively non-Islamic terrorist organizations, like the PIRA or the 1930s era Ku Klux Klan or the Red Brigades), but instead to the likes of Al-Qaeda or Aztec priests with sacrificial knives dripping blood. (Instead of feeding Quetzalcoatl with blood, these men wish to feed God with blood, the blood of the Israelis, but also the blood of themselves and their children. I cannot envision a God, compassionate and merciful, who wishes these things.) This is not the faith of the Muhammad (to me, a historical figure, not a religious one) who banned female infanticide any more than the Inquisition was the faith of the historical Yeshua. I have a limited sympathy for the Palestinian people but very little for Fatah and none at all for Hamas. These images were also taken of a human tragedy, of whatever cause, and posted in a very public place to garnish sympathy for a cause. Who cares about hamas? these are innocent dead children. I am completely against dead children on both sides, nevertheless, the numbers speak. Civilian palestinan deaths of wich are many children and women far outnumber those in israel. You or anyone else are most welcome to add images that would please the other side if that is our goal. Interestingly, when I read the source for that information, [5] it does not actually say what our article seems to say, that ISM faked the pictures. It seems to say that they presented them out of context. OK. However, even if ISM did not fake the picture, they changed the context in order to suit a political view. This means that what they say ought to be taken with a grain of salt. I'm not saying they didn't screw up, but I don't think that should completely exclude them as a source. The picture can still be attributed to them and people can take that for what it's worth. I agree with you completely that what they say should be taken with a grain of salt. But to me, that doesn't add up to creating phony pictures of dead Palestinian babies. Screw up? No, ISM didn't "screw-up" as you put it. "Screw-up" suggests a mistake, something caused by accident. ISM instead deliberately manipulated photographs, misrepresented the activities of one of its members (the unfortunate, but somewhat dim and somewhat maleficent Rachel Corrie) in order to manipulate public opinion and gather support for its cause and organization. They also tried to hide unflattering pictures of Corrie to from Western media outlets (The picture/footage of her screaming "death to the Jews" while burning Israeli and American flags made great copy for the right-wing media once discovered. She was also photographed/filmed throwing stones at Israeli soldiers.) Therefore, caveat emptor (let the buyer aware) applies doubly to an organization or person who has chosen to be a fraud or a trickster. (This is why Bill Clinton cannot practice law, and few people still consider Dan Rather a serious journalist). I hope that this picture is not faked, but the ISM has long forfeited the benefit of the doubt. The ISM prefers to paint itself as a neutral observer, but as long been revealed as a shill for the most radical of Hamas demands (Actual, non-demographic destruction of the Jewish State.) V. Hi Valentinejoesmith! I am concerned that you recently tagged the article Love Must Be Tough with a db-album speedy deletion template (CSD A9). Please note that CSD A9 applies almost exclusively to albums by an artist with no Wikipedia article, while the album you tagged was made by an article who has had an article since 2006. If you are unsure of certain speedy deletion criteria, a good rule of thumb is that most coherent articles with sources/other links proving the existence of the subject are not eligible for article-based speedy criteria (although they may be eligible for the general criteria). The Smithsonian American Art Museum will be holding a Wikipedia Loves Art! meetup on Friday, February 27 from 5-7 pm in the Kogod Courtyard. This is a photography event involving Wikipedians, along with Flickr users and others, to generate content for Wikipedia. Come share your experiences, meet the other teams, and take some photos! The Australasian Institute of Police is a legitimate, registered, not-for-profit organisation that has been established for policing. Do you have anything to do with policing? On what possible authority or motivation would you remove such an informational item without even having the basic courtesy of discussing this with people? I note that this is not the first time that you have done such... Dear unsigned: The material based on the Australasian document is based on a website taken straight from its website. (aka a Copyright violation) It also is NOT as signifigant in Australian policing as the Constitutional relationship between Australia and her Police. May I remind you that you removed the article due to 'blatant advertising' not under breach of copyright... I think that if you ask those within the medical profession (or any other profession for that matter) how important their professional body is for the sharing and building of knowledge that increases the performance of their profession...and would not see any article relating to their Institutes as 'advertising'. The trouble is... the criticism so quoted was highly removed from the facts. Musharraf, whatever his other virtues or vices, is a combat veteran and was decorated by the Pakistan Army for his courage in the field. Yes, I've lost things that I was sure I posted too, so I understand that. As for Pete Seeger - obviously I disagree with you. If you think describing a man of age 90 who has spent a lifetime and is still out there on the frontlines actively working for environmental and other causes as "tireless" is biased, all I can say is I wish you the same strength in your own old age (and me too). As you may see, the word is out of the intro at the moment, but I really do think when objections were raised to your edit - which after all reflects your own biases, right? - it would have been a better approach to talk about the edit rather than just reinstating it. By the way - as I asked on the talk page, would you be more comfortable with the word "tireless" if I added citations for it? Not especially. I think the problem with tireless is simply this... which is more factual? Al Gore is a tireless campaigner for climate change prevention? or Al Gore was awarded the Noble Prize for Science for his efforts to prevent climate change and has been rewarded an honorary degree from many institutions.. Anthony Norris Groves - UNPOV tag

Hi

Regarding:

1) "He passed in the presence of his Master" (I have never seen someone's death described that way in Wikipedia.) It is filled with POV, in that wikipedia does not take a position in the existence of Jehovah... and if you were a believer, it is also presumptuous to assume that His will is that Groves went to see God (as opposed to the other guy) 2) "He considered his life a failure..." Please cite this. 3) ..."Did not live long enough to see the worldwide impact of his ideas and example on a new generation of "faith missions" springing from the 1859-60 Revivals." Again, this sounds like it was written as a celebration of Groves' life... which is entirely inappropriate to an encyclopedia & to NPOV.

1. This is common expression for the passing of a Christian from this world into eternal life. That you haven't seen it described this way in Wikipedia doesn't detract from the reality of it. I don't know who originally posted it but I can understand why you might find it contentious. Perhaps a solution would be to replace it with "His niece, Lydia Muller, wrote at the time 'Leaning his head on his hand, he sweetly fell asleep in Jesus, at twelve on Friday, May 20th, 1853'". This conveys the sentimentality of the original post, as well as being a direct quote (taken from "Memoir of AN Groves with the Supplement") from an eyewitness.

2. I have not read the above-named Memoir so can't comment on this point.

3. It is indisputable fact that there was a revival of Christianity in 1859-60. It is true that his teachings had influence on this. It is true that he died before the revival occurred. It seems this is a factual statement, not a "celebration of ... life"

Hi.

Not sure if I'm using the correct method of replying to you - I'm still very much an amateur at Wikipedia, so apologies if I'm breaking protocol.

"Hi, to answer your questions, it is still not eh place to write about the existance of a Christian God as a known fact. I personally am quite sure of His existance, and even more sure about the existance of a Satan, neither, however, are facts in the scientific term. (this is what faith is about)."

I don't see why it isn't the place to write about the existence of a Christian God - there is abundant proof of His existence. You can't prove your mother's love scientifically but we don't need faith to know that it is there!

"As for a Christian revival in 1859-1860, it is certainly geocentric to refer to this as such. there was an indisputed revival of the Christian Brotherhood in England at this time... but there is none at all for a world-wide or even Christendom-wide "Great Awakening" of the scale as seen in the Americas and Britain around 1660."

Groves put his trust in God to supply ALL his needs. George Muller was greatly influenced by this and from that, a great many individuals and organisations around the world trust in God for all their needs. I know - I deal with them on a daily basis. Whilst most of these may quote Muller as their inspiration, Muller (amongst others) got his inspiration from Groves, so it is therefore perfectly true to say there was a "worldwide impact of his ideas and example on a new generation of "faith missions" ".

The quote I gave you is from page 501 of "Memoir of AN Groves with the Supplement" - Third Edition, published in 1869 by James Nisbet & Co, Berners Street, London. I have the book in front of me even now.

Protocol

You reply in quite the correct place.

Non sectarianism/"big tent"

Wikipedia is very diverse and includes wikipedians (sp) of any religious stripe or none. There are outstanding editors who are Christian (from "snake-handler" to liberal Episcopalians), Jewish (from reform to ultra-orthodox), Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Jain and atheists. Not talking about God or Christianity as established facts help keep Wikipedia a secular encyclopedia (not the Catholic Encyclopedia or even the 1911 Britannica . An article is certainly not the place to witness. (You will find that sort of thing on the Arabic language Wikipedia.)
Muller/Groves: I don't know anything at all about the gentlemen in question or their status with the almighty.
Please consider using the book reference function to place a tag on it. I'm not (obviously) familiar with the text in question.

On the subject of neutrality and providing proof, evolutionists are permitted to put their theories forward as scientific fact, when science actually disproves it. It is therefore not unreasonable for Christian contributors to state the factual existence of God

I know little about Groves (haven't had the opportunity to read the book I refer to) but anyone studying the life of Muller would be challenged to deny that what he accomplished is outside the realm of human achievement. The Wiki page on his life is quite sound.

"Please consider using the book reference function to place a tag on it. I'm not (obviously) familiar with the text in question." Does that mean you'd be happy for me to remove the UNPOV marker?

Prince Imperial

Hi, Just added a note to your comment on Louis Napoleon, the Prince Imperial. He can't have been a british army officer as the condition for him to go to military training in England was that he wasn't allowed to take commission in the army. Source: Saul Davids "Zulu. This I did not know. He had to have been something though. Do you know what his official status was with the British Army, if any? He was definitely killed in action by a Zulu, and I doubt he would have enlisted or taken a warrant...

WikiXDC: Wikipedia 10th Birthday!

National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)

You are invited to WikiXDC, a special meetup event and celebration on Saturday, January 22 hosted by the National Archives and Records Administration in downtown Washington, D.C.

Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup!

  1. At WikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
  2. To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
  3. To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.

DC Meetup: May 7 @ Tenleytown Library

The next DC Wikimedia meetup is scheduled for Saturday, May 7, 3:30-5:30 pm at the Tenleytown Library (adjacent to the Tenleytown Metro Station, Red Line), followed by dinner & socializing at some nearby place.

This is the first official meeting of our proposed Wikimedia DC chapter, with discussion of bylaws and next steps. Other agenda items include, update everyone on our successful Wikimania bid and next steps in the planning process, discuss upcoming activities that we want to do over the summer and fall, and more.

Regarding independent sources for page on Gary DeMar/ American Vision

Hi I came across the following article from the Southern Poverty Law Center. http://splcenter.org/get-informed/intelligence-report/browse-all-issues/2010/winter/the-hard-liners

In the article, SPLC declared American Vision, along with 12 other groups, to be a "Hate Group". This action was taken because: "Even as some well-known anti-gay groups like Focus on the Family moderate their views, a hard core of smaller groups, most of them religiously motivated, have continued to pump out demonizing propaganda aimed at homosexuals and other sexual minorities. These groups’ influence reaches far beyond what their size would suggest, because the “facts” they disseminate about homosexuality are often amplified by certain politicians, other groups and even news organizations."

Agenda items include:

  • election of the Board of Directors for the next two years
  • approval of a budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year
  • report on the activities and accomplishments of the past year
  • social gathering afterwards at a nearby restaurant

You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success!

This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us! Proposed deletion Corps Volontaires Coree

The article Corps Volontaires Coree has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Article lacks substance, is frequently incorrect and a better article exists on the topic at Belgian United Nations Command. Title is also incorrect.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

Backstage at the Smithsonian Libraries is part of Wikipedia Loves Libraries 2012, the second annual continent-wide campaign to bring Wikipedia and libraries together with on-site events. Running this fall through October and November, libraries (and archives) will open their doors to help build a lasting relationship with their local Wikipedian community.

Organized by Wikimedia DC, this event will take place on October 12, 2012, and will include new editor training, a "backstage pass" tour of the National Museum of Natural History, and an edit-a-thon. Everyone is welcome to attend!

December 10 is Ada Lovelace's birthday! Not only was she the world's first computer programmer, but also the world's first female open source developer! Come celebrate with Wikimedia District of Columbia at Busboys & Poets for an informal get together!

Wikimedia DC Holiday Party and Wiki Loves Monuments Exhibition

Please join Wikimedia DC and four other local media nonprofits—the National Press Club's Young Members Committee, 100Reporters, IRE and the Fund for Investigative Journalism—in winding down another year with a night of well-mannered frivolity.

The festivities will take place on Friday evening from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM in the Zenger Room on the 13th Floor of the National Press Club, located on 529 14th Street NW, near Metro Center. There will be meat and vegetarian appetizers as well as a cash bar with specially reduced drink prices all night long. In addition, we will be exhibiting the finalists of the Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest at the event.

Information icon Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Order of Liberation a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a " cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut-and-paste-move repair holding pen. Thank you. An exciting month of wiki events!

Hello there,

I am pleased to say that April will be a very exciting month for Wikipedia in Washington, DC. We have a lot of different events coming up, so you will have a lot to choose from.

First, a reminder that our second annual Women in the Arts Edit-a-Thon will take place on Sunday, March 30 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Coming up in April, we have our first-ever Open Government WikiHack with the Sunlight Foundation on April 5–6! We are working together to use open government data to improve the Wikimedia projects, and we would love your help. All are welcome, regardless of coding or editing experience. We will also be having a happy hour the day before, with refreshments courtesy of the Sunlight Foundation.

On Friday, April 11 we are having our first edit-a-thon ever with the Library of Congress. The Africa Collection Edit-a-Thon will focus on the Library's African and Middle East Reading Room. It'll be early in the morning, but it's especially worth it if you're interested in improving Wikipedia's coverage of African topics.

The following day, we are having our second annual Wiki Loves Capitol Hill training. We will discuss policy issues relevant to Wikimedia and plan for our day of outreach to Congressional staffers that will take place during the following week.

There are other meetups in the works, so be sure to check our meetup page with the latest. I hope to see you at some of these events!

Two edit-a-thons coming up!

Hello there!

I'm pleased to tell you about two upcoming edit-a-thons:

  • This Tuesday, April 29, from 2:30 to 5:30 PM, we have the Freer and Sackler edit-a-thon. (Sorry for the short notice!)
  • On Saturday, May 10 we have the Wikipedia APA edit-a-thon, in partnership with the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, from 10 AM to 5 PM.

We have more stuff coming up in May and June, so make sure to keep a watch on the DC meetup page. As always, if you have any recommendations or requests, please leave a note on the talk page.

Washington, DC meetups in June

Greetings!

Wikimedia DC has yet another busy month in June. Whether you're a newcomer to Wikipedia or have years of experience, we're happy to see you come. Here's what's coming up:

  • On Wednesday, June 11 from 7 to 9 PM come to the WikiSalon at the Cove co-working space. Hang out with Wikipedia enthusiasts!
  • Saturday, June 14 is the Frederick County History Edit-a-Thon from 11 AM to 4 PM. Help improve local history on Wikipedia.
  • The following Saturday, June 21, is the June Meetup. Dinner and drinks with Wikipedians!
  • Come on Tuesday, June 24 for the Wikipedia in Your Library edit-a-thon at GWU on local and LGBT history.
  • Last but not least, on Sunday, June 29 we have the Phillips Collection Edit-a-Thon in honor of the Made in America exhibit.

Wikipedia is better with friends, so why not come out to an event?

The Great American Wiknic and other events in July

I am pleased to announce our fourth annual picnic, the Great American Wiknic, will take place at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, July 13 from 1 to 5 PM (rain date: July 20). We will be hanging out by the statue of Dante Alighieri, a statue that was donated to the park in 1921 as a tribute to Italian Americans. Read more about the statue on Wikipedia. If you would like to sign up for the picnic, you can do so here. When signing up, say what you’re going to bring!

July will also feature the second annual Great American Wiknic in Frederick, Maryland. This year’s Frederick picnic will take place on Sunday, July 6 at Baker Park. Sign up here for the Frederick picnic.

What else is going on in July? We have the American Chemical Society Edit-a-Thon on Saturday, July 12, dedicated to notable chemists, and our monthly WikiSalon on Wednesday, July 16.

Wikimedia DC invites revolutionaries, free thinkers, and other sundry editors to a DC WikiSalon

The WikiSalon is a special meetup usually held during the first and third full weeks of every month, from 7 PM to 9 PM. It's an informal gathering of Wikimedia enthusiasts, who come together to discuss Wikimedia wikis and collaboratively edit. There's no set agenda, and guests are welcome to recommend articles for the group to edit or edit on their own.

If you're coming by Metro, the closest station is Dupont Circle (on the Red Line). If you're driving, a lot of parking opens up downtown after 6:30 PM, so finding a parking space (even a free one) should be easy. Once you've found the building, go to Cove on the second floor. We will be in the conference room.

Museum hacks and museum edits

Hello there!

Upcoming events:

  • February 6–8: The third annual ArtBytes Hackathon at the Walters Art Museum! This year Wikimedia DC is partnering with the Walters for a hack-a-thon at the intersection of art and technology, and I would like to see Wikimedia well represented.
  • February 11: The monthly WikiSalon, same place as usual. RSVP on Meetup or just show up!
  • February 15: Wiki Loves Small Museums in Ocean City. Mary Mark Ockerbloom, with support from Wikimedia DC, will be leading a workshop at the Small Museum Association Conference on how they can contribute to Wikipedia. Tons of representatives from GLAM institutions will be present, and we are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help out, check out "Information for Volunteers".

I am also pleased to announce events for Wikimedia DC Black History Month with Howard University and NPR. Details on those events soon.

Code for death dates; dates in text

This code is designed for infoboxes, not for text. Please do not add it to the opening sentence of Lead sections. Also, you do not need to add birth/death dates after the names of blue-linked people in the text of articles. If anyone is curious about the person's dates, they can click on the bluelink. New deal for page patrollers

Hi Valentinejoesmith,

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the current system we introduced in 2011 is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

G'day all, please be advised that throughout April 2018 the Military history Wikiproject is running its annual backlog elimination drive. This will focus on several key areas:

This year, the Military history project would like to extend a specific welcome to members of Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red, and we would like to encourage all participants to consider working on helping to improve our coverage of women in the military. This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.

Croton-on-Hudson, New York / Notable people / Howard Major Buckley

Hello. I noticed that you entered Howard Major Buckley in the Croton-on-Hudson, New York article's Notable people section in your edit to the article 18:01, 23 December 2006 (the section was then called "Famous Natives, Residents and Former Residents"). However, Baker's article states his birthplace as Croton Falls, New York - which is a different place than Croton-on-Hudson. I found no evidence that Baker ever lived in Croton-on-Hudson. Problem with your custom signature

You have a custom signature set in your account preferences. A change to Wikipedia's software has made your current custom signature incompatible with the software.

The problem: Your preferences are set to interpret your custom signature as wikitext. However, your current custom signature does not contain any wikitext.

The solutions: You can reset your signature to the default, or you can fix your signature.

Solution 1: Reset your signature to the default:
  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
  3. Remove anything in the Signature: text box. (It might already be empty.)
  4. Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page. (The red "Restore all default settings" button will reset all of your preference settings, not just the signature.)
Solution 2: Fix your custom signature:
  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
  3. Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page.

Use of the "Expert needed" template without category or reason parameters

Hey, I've been doing some maintenance category cleanout and noticed that you added the {{ Expert needed}} template to Fabian Ajogwu, but you didn't specify a WikiProject category. Not specifying a category makes the template unhelpful, and adds it to the useless Category:Articles needing unspecified expert attention. Additionally, it's crucial to add a reason= parameter, or it will probably be removed because nobody can tell what the problem is. I added a category for you, but please supply parameters when using that template in the future (i.e. {{expert needed|Politics|ex2=Economics|ex3=Finance & Investment|reason=These GDP figures look like they might be miscalculated}}.
