Welcome to the 2019 WikiCup, the competition begins today. If you have already joined, your submission page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and we will set up your submissions page. One important rule to remember is that only content on which you have completed significant work during 2019, and which you have nominated this year, is eligible for points in the competition, the judges will be checking! Any questions should be directed to one of the judges, or left on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will make it to round 2. Good luck! Sunday January 13: Wikipedia Day 2019 in NYC

You are invited to join us at Ace Hotel for Wikipedia Day 2019, a Wikipedia celebration and mini-conference as part of the project's global 18th birthday festivities. In addition to the party, the event features keynote presentations, panels, lightning talks, and, of course, open space sessions. And there will be cake. I have no issues with your standard of not naming individual wikipedians at WP:JOKES. I do take issue with your line that the joke I added was obviously inappropriate - given that there are MULTIPLE images with his hair floating around. If it was that obvious it could have been removed in any of the dozens of edits that happened between then and now. Again no issue with it being removed, but merely the way you have framed it. @ Barkeep49: It seems obvious (to my judgment -- perhaps I shouldn't have phrased it to seem objectively obvious) that, regardless of what someone has shared/shown/said/demonstrated, jokes about an editor's physical appearance shouldn't be included in a projectspace list of Wikipedia-related jokes. I certainly don't want to imply it was done in mean spirit or bad faith. Quite the opposite, as I said, I'm nearly certain Oshwah be just fine with it (and probably think it funny). By the way, can I just say how nice it is to have another person doing FPCs in the Wikicup? I've been alone in past years I've participated. @ Adam Cuerden: Cheers. I'm semi-active with FPC regardless, but more on Commons than on enwiki. I have a small handful here, but had a few instances of feeling like I didn't know what people are really looking for, or that the distinction between Commons and enwiki FPC was too arbitrary (e.g. some people but not others care about "wow" factor, varied standards for technical quality, varied expectations for EV... someone opposed in the past because the article the picture was used for didn't explain some aspect of the subject not directly related to the image). Then just the overall lack of participation. Meh. Figured I'd give it another shot, though, when I saw that you used the WikiCup reviews needed template for FPC, it made me think that might attract sufficient participation to at least have a quorum. Anyway, I suspect if you keep churning out these restorations at the same clip you have been, you've got a pretty good shot at taking the whole competition, putting aside potential burnout. I'm just hoping to make it to the 3rd or 4th round and get some FPs, GAs, and maybe an FA out of the motivation... :) — Rhododendrites ^talk \\ 20:46, 19 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi. I'm fine with your undo of my edit, but I'm a little confused by the explanation. You said it's, a request to not remove links when it does more harm than good, but I'm not sure what you're suggesting I should have done instead. Should I have just left it as a redlink? I've always found the cleaning up of backlinks after a deletion to be the most error-prone part of closing an AfD, and I'm sure I make plenty of mistakes there. I'm just trying to understand your concern better. -- RoySmith (talk) 15:45, 23 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi RoySmith. Yeah, it's a common thing with the Twinkle script that semi-automates it. It's really just an issue with lists (both embedded and stand-alone) that only include notable examples. The ideal would be to check the page it's being removed from, and if everything else is bluelinked, it's probably best to just remove the entry rather than unlink (or skip it, as second choice). An entry that's unlinked is no more appropriate to include in those lists than one that is linked, but when it's linked it's easier for others to find and remove. The red stands out more, but more importantly it makes it possible to take a deleted article and use "what links here" to find all instances in lists that would need to be removed. That is all. Not a huge deal; just makes list clean-up a little harder sometimes. — Rhododendrites ^talk \\ 15:58, 23 January 2019 (UTC)

You say, Twinkle script, but I think you meant XFDcloser. In any case, @ Evad37: I wonder if this could be improved with some embedded hinting in those lists. What if we invented a (possibly hidden) Category:Lists which should never have redlinks (or some other kind of embeddable marker). XFDcloser could use that as a hint to adjust its post-deletion unlinking process. -- RoySmith (talk) 16:18, 23 January 2019 (UTC)

Ah, yes, I may mean that. I don't do much xfd closing myself. :) I like the category idea, though I dare say that even just being after an asterisk or a pipe at the beginning of a line (part of an unordered list or a table) would probably suffice, too, if the category approach were too cumbersome. I imagine most of the time (but not all, of course), it would be better to remove from a list when deleted. Likewise, removing a link from a page that starts "list of" or "comparison of," would cover a lot of the issue. — Rhododendrites ^talk \\ 16:48, 23 January 2019 (UTC)

@ RoySmith and Rhododendrites: XFDcloser should already be checking with the closer for links within list items per WP:XFDC#Unlinking backlinks, because it isn't possible to determine if the list is meant to be complete, or only of notable things, or if the backlink is only incidental to the list item. I might have to review the logic of how it works, which was based on discussions from a couple of years ago. - Evad37 [ talk 23:57, 23 January 2019 (UTC)
