We actually talked about this before in :id, but nobody seems to know how to fix it :-). Do you know anyone that might help with this? Thanks. PS: This only happens on IE, on Firefox it looks okay. Hayabusa future 05:15, 20 August 2005 (UTC) reply

Great catch of that typo! It's been there since Ed Poor uploaded Jimbo's remarks from his weblog.... I'm amazed that I reverted vandalism and yet perpetuated the typo. Mamawrites 13:45, 20 August 2005 (UTC) reply

Dashes in titles

Before Wikipedia switched to MediaWiki 1.5, there were technical restrictions on what characters could be used, and many articles had titles that worked round this. Since the upgrade, these articles have generally been renamed to what they would be called in running text. Susvolans (pigs can fly) 16:55, 22 August 2005 (UTC) reply

Thanks for covering for me on that Peruvian flag. [1] Thank you. :-) -- PFHLai 16:50, 2005 August 24 (UTC)

I'm not aware of this bug till now. Thanks, again. I'll keep an eye on this next time.
BTW, is it a good idea to change the C-uploaded template to allow alternate filenames ? Sometimes WCommons and English Wikipedia have different images using the same name, e.g. Image: Kofi Annan.jpg and Image:Kofi_Annan.jpg. If we upload the image from WCommons as is, the image in English Wikipedia will be displaced. A different filename is needed to avoid this with the current C-uploaded template. Perhaps we need sth like {{C-uploaded|WCommonFileName.jpg}} and upload with any filename we like ? Even Image:ITN-pic.jpg, which we can protect permanently ? This may help avoid this problem with the file extension, I hope. Just an idea, not that I know how to edit the template, nor am I trying to be an m:instruction creep. -- PFHLai 17:31, 2005 August 24 (UTC)

Ugh. I didn't realize it was on the main page. Ick. Sorry about that. But there's a persistant vandal who's vandalizing it repeatedly, so it needs to be watched closely. Zoe 08:53, August 28, 2005 (UTC)

Actions of User:Notanerd

The abovementioned user has been acting strangely. A discussion has formed at WP:AN/I, and I thought you might want to comment on this. My reasoning: the user copied your user page directly, and put it on his. You also might confirm that you and Notanerd are separate people. Bratsche talk 5 pillars 20:23, August 28, 2005 (UTC)

good janitorial work

I award you this WikiMedal for Janitorial Services for your diligent work keeping the Main Page neat and tidy, and free of unfree images, and in particular, your creation of the useful {{ C-uploaded}} template for free images from the Commons. -- PFHLai 02:48, 2005 August 30 (UTC)

Hello, Pharos, you deserve a medal for keeping the MainPage neat and tidy all this time, and free of unfree images. I think this is long overdue. Cheers ! :-) -- PFHLai 02:48, 2005 August 30 (UTC)

Move Proposal

Hi! As someone with no axe to grind in the Sea of Japan Naming Dispute, I'd placed the article in my watch list during another edit war. You need to check the end of the archieved Talk [2] and decide whether that naming discussion impacts your recommended renaming. If you are then resolute, then you should add a {{Moveto}} template to kick off an official vote process, as it's likely someone in one nationalistic camp or the other will object. Since it will become noted on the relevant move control and log pages, that at least will draw some outside input from neutral admins, etc. In any event, the straw poll you started is ineffective, as no move will take place on such hotly contested pages without a formal vote, in my experience (See Talk:Tsushima Island archieve on naming issue and move -- some of the same nationalists active there are active on this page... you might benifit from knowing who may be biased — assuming you're resolute in wanting the change!) In any event, good luck! Fra nkB 14:15, 1 September 2005 (UTC) reply

Newcomer Thanks

Thanks for the Newcomer Award, Pharos. I'm really excited to see the Black Seminoles tidbit make the DYK on the main page and you've inspired me to try another article soon. Austinbirdman 13:36, 2 September 2005 (UTC) reply

DYK

Oops, forgot that FP was coming on; I just looked at the DYK, saw that it hadn't been updated in quite a while, and decided to change it. Well, it has to be updated sometime during the weekend, and having it a bit early shouldn't hurt, should it? (Of course, we can always use new facts if needed after the weekend ends)... Thanks! diacritics in featured article list

Hi - I noticed you corrected the diacritics in Wikipedia:List_of_Wikipedians_by_featured_article_nominations. The tools I'm using (shell and awk on a Mac OS X) have a hard time with ö and ă (I haven't exactly figured out how to resolve this). As an expediency, I was using o and a, which end up making the link go to a redirect rather than the actual article. I can't promise the diacritics won't disappear again, but I am aware of the issue and trying to do something about it. Also, Bath and Turquoise (nominated by user:OldakQuill) currently come out in the other order. I'm not sure if the articles by nominator are in any particular order (probably alphabetical). This is something I haven't paid a lot of attention to yet. I'm hoping to preserve the ability to auto-generate this list from the raw source data to reduce the ongoing maintenance overhead. If you have any other suggestions or comments, please let me know. -- Rick Block ( talk) 00:32, September 5, 2005 (UTC)

Judea and Samaria

Pharos, what's with the aggression over the proposed merge? It isn't like you. SlimVirgin (talk) 01:39, September 8, 2005 (UTC)

I'm sorry if I somehow came off as agressive; I certainly didn't mean to be. Truth be told, I was a little off-put by a lack of full engagement in discussion over the last 2 weeks. If my words were a little stronger than usual, it was because I wanted to engage you in a sustained conversation rather than a "statement, reply, reply, full stop" as had happened twice already. Believe me, I only use italics as a last resort! :) I just felt I wasn't hearing your side fully, which I do always want to hear. So thanks for listening, and thanks for spreading the WikiLove!-- Pharos 02:29, 8 September 2005 (UTC) reply

Thanks for your note, Pharos, and not to worry. I apologize for not engaging in the discussion properly, but for some reason I thought it was over, though with hindsight I don't know why I came to that conclusion. I would like to see separate pages for these two names, because I see them as almost separate subjects, and although most people call the area the West Bank, a significant number (many Jews and Zionist Christians) hang on to the other term for religious and political reasons. My idea was that the article could be expanded to discuss the reasoning and who uses the term, but I haven't gotten around to seeing whether there are good sources. Having said that, I don't have strong feelings about it, and if I'm the only person who opposes the merge, as I seem to be at the moment, I'll give in gracefully. If you merge them again, I won't revert you. Best, SlimVirgin (talk) 00:31, September 9, 2005 (UTC)

ITN

Fair enough. I also occasionally forget to quantify my exact reasoning for doing something and wind up using a weaker rationale. I try not to though. I forgot how long it takes the commons people to protect stuff, when its late and everybody's asleep. ;) - St| eve 05:47, 9 September 2005 (UTC) reply

Category:Natives of Gdańsk/Danzig

Since you've made a comment on Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2005 September 6 regarding renaming the Category:Natives of Gdańsk, would you also have a look at Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion/Log/2005_September_5#Category:Natives_of_Danzig, where I suggested deleting Category:Natives_of_Danzig ? Thanks. -- Lysy ( talk) 08:38, 9 September 2005 (UTC) reply

Photo

Shouldn't this have been removed from the articles it was on before being deleted? I don't recall what this image looked like, but I imagine it was probably a PD NASA photo.--Pharos 03:04, 20 September 2005 (UTC)

  • Yes they should, I'm going around doing just that. I'll go back and check that one though if I missed it. As far as PD goes it might be but there's no indication of that status. Thanks for checking though! Rx StrangeLove 03:08, 20 September 2005 (UTC) reply
    • Question, I took that photo off of the two pages it appeared in before deletion, did you see another appearance? If so I'd like to get of off there also...thanks! Rx StrangeLove 03:16, 20 September 2005 (UTC) reply
      • Oh, I see. You're right, that'd be a good way to go about it, but with the rush that's been put on this I'm not sure if anyone is doing that. What makes it worse is that these images are being deleted in droves so it's happening a lot. But I think I will start putting notices on talk pages while I delete images that aren't linked, thanks for pointing that out....at least some folks will get warnings. Proposed merger of Resource curse and Rentier state

Hello, as the creator of and frequent past contributor to the resource curse article, I was wondering whether you had any opinions on a merger of that article with rentier state, which seems to overlap in content in several areas. Technically I suppose the two concepts are distinct but between the two of them, I think there's potential for a solid article. Resource curse is probably the more popular terminology, although rentier state (which looks to be an orphan at the moment, actually) might be a more technical term.

If you have any thoughts, please leave me a reply either here or on on my talk page, thanks! MC MasterChef 13:36, 21 September 2005 (UTC) reply

Hi Pharos, thank you for your note about the image. I'll ask my friend and I'll change the image page if he agrees. Both of the licences you mentioned would mean he would retain his copyright, is that correct? Bittersweet 20:34, 21 September 2005 (UTC) reply
