Thank you for your note that the VDC page contains significant correlation with the CIFE website. You may notice that the entire section VDC Project Model is in quotes. And, obviously the introduction is a summary of the page, which as previously noted is quoted in its entirety from (Kunz & Fischer 2007). I realize the message you posted to my talk page is an automated posting since a human would not have failed to notice this distinction. Nice bot you have working for you! Sorry to be only 3 years to late ansering, but dont come often see wikipedia in English, and, because the international history of art ignore completely Portugal, did not expect there questions.
It is difficult to say precisely if the system is truly anti-seismic for the currently required safety levels. For the time wasgoindeed a great technical achievement if the building diden't go over 4 floors. It is known that seismic assays were made, within the capabilities of the time, as seen in the recent museum - Lisbon Stoy Center - an excellent interactive presentation on the subject. The Marquis of Pombal made build a structure - like a building - the city main square and put a considerable number of soldiers marching on the top and around the structure in order to simulate an earthquake. The structure held up wonderfully. Was considered a complete success. Today it is a big incognita if hold a catastrophe like the 1755. The wood has lost elasticity and, during the nineteenth century, was allowed to increase the number of floors in most of the buildings - currently there are only 4 buildings exactly as in the eighteenth century. Another worrying factor is the effect of pollution and vibration caused by traffic, regardless in recent years it was made a great effort to reduce the number of cars circulating.
The sources were not indicated because in Lisbon public libraries I found almost nothing in English on the subject. Only minor references very critical, by the authors of the first half of the twentieth century, trying to disrigard the Pombaline because is neither true French Rococo or Neoclassicism from Greek or Roman origin. Because moste of the books are Portuguese editions, I did not thought it was necessary to make a bibliography only accessible in Portugal - even in Brazil is not easy to find references to this subject.
