Closure of COI edit request

Information icon Hi, I saw that you closed 2 COI edit request here and there. I've partially overriden your closure on the 2nd one. The thing is, wouldn't you think it would be good if you explained to them why you closed the request that way? Leaving them hanging there without details but the {{request edit|D|ADV}} wouldn't do much don't you think? Here what you should do. Instead of only giving feedback just via the template, what if you in addition, ping the COI user and reply back on why you declined in detail. I hope this helps. {{ replyto}} Can I Log In's (talk) page 06:06, 28 April 2020 (UTC)

Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice

Hi Mdaniels5757, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 ( talk)

/* Software/libraries */ added another free online topic modelling link

Hi Mdaniels5757, I have added a link to a free online service into the /* Software/libraries */ which is similar to what is already on the page: (for instance https://lettier.com/projects/lda-topic-modeling/) The difference in my link is that it delivers the result of Topic Modelling (TopicMap) a different format (A visual map). This should be a new insightful information to the readers as to how the Topic Modelling can be visually represented. So kindly requesting you to review your decision to remove my addition as it actually adds to the knowledge base. If I should maybe upload an example of that TopicMap as a picture or do some other reformating - please advise accordingly. Thanks! Abbrivia ( talk) 16:17, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

CCI RD1 query

Thanks for your contributions to the CCI.

I do have some concerns about A View to a Kill.

I see that the paragraph you removed does match text at this IMDB site

However when I search that site in the Internet archive, the version after his edit: IA Nov 2007

Doesn't have this text, suggesting that it was added to the IMDb site after his edit. Do you think I'm missing something? S Philbrick (Talk) 16:02, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

Sphilbrick, You're right, it could be reverse plagiarism. Thanks for noticing. Mdaniels5757 ( talk) 18:44, 9 February 2020 (UTC)

ACC tool access request approved

Thank you for your interest in the account creation process. I have verified that you have signed the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information and approved your request.

You may now access the interface here pending a tool root marking your account as identified in the tool database. Before you begin handling requests, please ensure you have read and understood the account creation guide and username policy to familiarize yourself with the process.

Please subscribe yourself to the private ACC mailing list following the instructions on that page. I also advise that you also join us on IRC #wikipedia-en-accounts connect where a bot informs us when new account requests come in and you can get real time advice on how to handle requests.

Please note failure to correctly assess requests will result in suspension of tool access. Account creation is not a race, and each one should be handled diligently and thoroughly. Releasing personally identifying information (such as IP and email addresses), whether intentionally or unintentionally, is treated very seriously and will generally result in immediate suspension.

Currently you are allowed to create up to six accounts per day, and you won't be able to create an account with a similar name to that of another user; these requests are marked as "Flagged user needed" on the interface. However, if you reach the limit frequently, you can request the account creator permission at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Account creator.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions. Thank you for participating in the account creation process. Again welcome! —  JJMC89( T· C) 20:43, 5 April 2020 (UTC)

reFill

Hi, I notice you use reFill, which is a very useful toll. However, it hasn't been updated since |dead-url= was superseded by |url-status= so causes error messages to be thrown when archived urls are filled, such as here. Could I ask you to check for this when using reFill. Regards.-- John B123 ( talk) 11:07, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

@ John B123: Will do, thanks for letting me know. Mdaniels5757 ( talk) 14:23, 9 April 2020 (UTC)

Your question on ACC 287290

Hi there - you left a question as to the proper close on ACC request 287290. I replied in the comments on that request. (Unfortunately there's no way to ping you within the ACC tool.) ‑‑ ElHef ( Meep?) 22:35, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

Hello Mdaniels5757, I saw that you responded to a request at the Wikipedia:WikiProject on open proxies. Unfortunately, only "verified" users may respond to such requests, though your response in this case seemed completely fine and reasonable. I have currently responded to a few requests, but left them open until a verified admin could review them, who will determine whether I should be a verified user. Template editor granted

Your account has been granted the "templateeditor" user permission, allowing you to edit templates and modules that have been protected with template protection. It also allows you to bypass the title blacklist, giving you the ability to create and edit editnotices. Before you use this user right, please read Wikipedia:Template editor and make sure you understand its contents. In particular, you should read the section on wise template editing and the criteria for revocation.

You can use this user right to perform maintenance, answer edit requests, and make any other simple and generally uncontroversial edits to templates, modules, and edinotices. You can also use it to enact more complex or controversial edits, after those edits are first made to a test sandbox, and their technical reliability as well as their consensus among other informed editors has been established. If you are willing to process edit requests on templates and modules, keep in mind that you are taking responsibility to ensure the edits have consensus and are technically sound.

This user right gives you access to some of Wikipedia's most important templates and modules; it is critical that you edit them wisely and that you only make edits that are backed up by consensus. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password.

If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time.

If you were granted the permission on a temporary basis you will need to re-apply for the permission a few days before it expires including in your request a permalink to the discussion where it was granted and a {{ ping}} for the administrator who granted the permission. You can find the permalink in your rights log.

Nmap

W.r.t. your investigation of 45.83.40.14, I assume that you used Nmap (based on your comments). Note that Nmap is considered invasive, and though publicly accessible (unlike other tools), should be used rarely. Also, Nmap port scanning is illegal in some jurisdictions, so it may get you in legal trouble as well. -- MrClog ( talk) 20:35, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

Also, in this case looking at the owner would have made it clear we're dealing with a data centre. (We don't normally block data centres by the way, only if they're disruptive.) -- MrClog ( talk) 20:37, 9 May 2020 (UTC)
MrClog, OK. FYI, I had it on less-invasive settings, and it's legal where I am, but you're right that it was completely unneeded anyways. Mdaniels5757 ( talk) 21:30, 9 May 2020 (UTC)

Re Spam Blacklist Request

Hello. Why did you reverted my edits from Anime News Network? Why? Because is the true? Anyway i proceed to blacklist the url animenewsnetwork.com on spam blacklist because is spammy that user. Almost any anime subject wiki appear with 10-15 links to that website. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sareville ( talkcontribs) 19:30, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

@ Sareville: Hi. I reverted one edit of yours for a couple of reasons: it gave incorrect information (ANN was not blacklisted, you requested that an admin do it), it says without citing evidence that the site "is not a reliable source", and it says "page closed for violation" when it was not, and all of this was in a section header, where it did not belong. Best, -- Mdaniels5757 ( talk) 19:49, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
@ Mdaniels5757: Of course is not a reliable source, and more thing is so spammy. You can check all anime pages Naruto, Anime, Dragon Ball and many other pages with anime subject there are more than 10 links on every page which is go to animenewsnetwork.com And of course i requested to an admin to block on english wikipedia this url animenewsnetwork.com How to be reliable? Is only a blog? Is not an official source. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sareville ( talkcontribs) 20:14, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
@ Sareville: OK. I don't know whether it's a reliable source or not. However, even if it is unreliable, and even if it should be blacklisted, this was still not an appropriate edit to their Wikipedia article.
Also, please remember to sign your posts with four tildes (~) in a row. Best, -- Mdaniels5757 ( talk) 22:50, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

Page mover granted

Hello, Mdaniels5757. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, move subpages when moving the parent page(s), and move category pages.

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.

Hello. I'm not sure if its just me, but this script won't work on long pages such as this. 1989 ( talk) 15:32, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

@ 1989: Hi. Happy to see someone else using it! It works for me. It looks like you set it to timeout in your common.js, try removing it for now (I will implement caching so it is hopefully faster soon). -- Mdaniels5757 ( talk) 15:36, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
I added it to see if it would help. That didn't work either. 1989 ( talk) 15:41, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
@ 1989: Huh. I tested stuff out, and it seems to be something in your global.js. No clue what, though. -- Mdaniels5757 ( talk) 15:56, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
Both User:Gary/comments_in_local_time and User:Kephir/gadgets/unclutter seem to be conflicting with the script. 1989 ( talk) 16:10, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
@ 1989: User:Mxn/CommentsInLocalTime seems to be compatible, at least. -- Mdaniels5757 ( talk) 16:13, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
Be that as it may, I'm currently having trouble with it. How about unclutter? 1989 ( talk) 17:00, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
@ 1989: Looks like that does some signature minimisation that messes it up. It may work if you disable that feature by adding the following before importing the script:
window.kephirUnclutter = {
	signaturesProcess : false,
	signaturesMinimise : false,
	signaturesColourise : false,
};
One or more of these lines may be able to be removed, but I don't know which. I'll add this incompatibility to the documentation. -- Mdaniels5757 ( talk) 17:05, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
Keep in mind your script works with them, it just doesn't when the page is too long. @ Amorymeltzer: Would you be able to see what's wrong with the Signature minimisation? Not sure if the author is still active. 1989 ( talk) 17:27, 29 May 2020 (UTC)
I found the culprit. When I use reply-link and Unclutter together, they don't work simultaneously anymore when long pages are present with the markAdmins script. In fact, I reported an issue to User:Enterprisey about reply-link not working when using Unclutter, and I can see that has not been resolved yet. 1989 ( talk) 16:27, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

Do you have any idea why ClueBot isn't archiving the page, despite several threads being older than 72h? I poked around earlier but couldn't figure it out. GorillaWarfare  (talk) 18:53, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

Proxy

I saw the two lists with various thingies, but it wasn't all that clear to me: I should have done {{proxycheck|open}}? If you can add that to the top of that page, that would be helpful for amateurs like me... Drmies ( talk) 21:33, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

  • @ Drmies: No worries. Guessing that the problem was that you were on the wrong page; Wikipedia:WikiProject_on_open_proxies#Reporting does a prefilled report (much like the one for SPI). I'll add a header on the reports subpage. Cheers, -- Mdaniels5757 ( talk) 21:41, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
    • I was? Thanks--I got there by following some link from some other page... Drmies ( talk) 22:01, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
  • I saw where you pinged me and why you undid that--thanks. On a COMPLETELY unrelated note, can you do that proxy-thing for 178.22.192.0/21, and especially 178.22.198.57? And I'm wondering about 2605:A601:A81A:5800:20C:29FF:FE41:8D80, in light of what you said. Drmies ( talk) 23:31, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
    • @ Drmies: 178.22.198.57 is  Confirmed to have a security vulnerability that would cause it to be usable as a {{ zombie proxy}}. You have the ability to gauge collateral better than I can, but blocking the /21 may or may not be overkill, and any block should be less than 1 year. The 2605... IPv6 address is Inconclusive. Also, you may wish to take a look at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/HH II TT LL EE RR 14 \ 88, there were two more socks, so some sort of rangeblock may be in order. (I'll keep an eye on the user creation log, they should be easy to spot. I'm shocked swastikas aren't on the blacklist for account names tbh...) -- Mdaniels5757 ( talk) 23:41, 6 June 2020 (UTC)

Open Proxies Project

So I actually didn't know that was a thing until today - neat project. If you don't mind me asking, what tools did you use to determine that the one IP was a zombie proxy? GeneralNotability ( talk) 01:38, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

@ GeneralNotability: Yeah, it's useful (especially for some ACC -related issues). That IP was a pretty easy one to confirm as a proxy: I saw the port number in the block log (8080), opened up another browser, changed my proxy settings to connect to 124.105.197.141:8080, and found that it worked. I got the {{ zombie proxy}} thing from the fact that MikroTik routers have a widespread security vulnerability that makes it easy for attackers to turn them into open proxies, and when I put http://124.105.197.141 into my browser it says that it is, in fact, a mikrotik router (although the version number makes it should imply that the specific vulnerability I was thinking of when writing it was fixed, there have been others since, and I think it is possible that the router could be lying). Connecting to a proxy is really the only way to confirm it definitely, but you can also get close to confirmation with things like WHOIS records. Best, -- Mdaniels5757 ( talk) 01:51, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Group editnotice seems not to be working

Heyo, hope you're well - and thanks for handling a couple of my editnotices recently! Appreciate it

The one you just sorted for me, Template:Editnotices/Group/User:Yapperbot/kill, seems not to be working, weirdly - I thought I'd drop you a message to see if it was something obvious before taking it to VPT if it's not. If you take a look at the edit page for a subpage, for instance, you can see pretty clearly that there's no editnotice of the sort there.

Any ideas what's happening? It's not just that page, it's any subpage - I've tried creating the root page and purging the cache, to no avail.
