Yeah, I've popped my head over at IRC a couple of times; I struggled! I couldn't give myself a voice whenever I signed in, so I was being asked constantly if I wanted any help; someone gave me a temporary voice but it had expired by the time I got back to my PC. Do you know how to set it automatically? Cheers, PeterSymonds (talk) 21:39, 18 May 2008 (UTC) reply

Re: Race and crime

Briefly, I removed the information in question because the Race and crime article is not about race relations, but simply about the correlation between race and crime. Statistics about interracial crime give a far too narrow view of the topic as they usually comprise a very small percentage of the overall crime rate; in that specific case the statistics assert a "white vs. black" stance (which adds a POV to the article) and are less than 10% of the overall rape statistics for that year most years. (Not sure about 1982, but that was the case in the 1997 statistics that are already cited in the same section) Basically, not only is the information misleading when placed in that article, it's essentially useless information for the scope of the article as well. Hope that clears it up. -- Y|yukichigai ( ramble argue check) 10:02, 20 May 2008 (UTC) reply

P.S. Also, I'd like to point out that the citation, while properly formatted, cannot be easily verified unless you happen to have Volume 88 of the American Journal of Sociology in front of you. This was not a factor in my decision to remove the information, but given the controversial nature of the topic it is perfectly plausible that someone might make up a convincing sounding citation to add on to fabricated statistics in order to introduce their own POV to the article. The general rule for Race and crime has been that any statistic or other piece of even vaguely controversial information needs to be sourced to something that is linkable; otherwise you're effectively giving every fringe nutjob an open door to adding their own racist, fabricated statistics. -- Y|yukichigai ( ramble argue check) 10:09, 20 May 2008 (UTC) reply
any and all academic journals are easily found on jstor, don't pretend to be unaware of this. Nyuba ( talk) 23:21, 20 May 2008 (UTC) reply
That handles the issue of sourcing, but it still doesn't address the two bigger issues that the statistics are misleading and irrelevant to the article. -- Y|yukichigai ( ramble argue check) 23:27, 20 May 2008 (UTC) reply
...and now that I've read the single page that was accessible in the link I can outright say that the statistics are wholly unsuitable for inclusion. The statistics used for the study in question were based on 443 crimes over a four year period, which is an absurdly small sampling size for rape crimes, and even assuming the limited focus was anywhere near appropriate for the scope of the article that small sample size is virtually guaranteed to come with a high margin of error. There are far better statistics already used in the article which establish a better overall picture. -- Y|yukichigai ( ramble argue check) 23:37, 20 May 2008 (UTC) reply
Just noticed the R&C article vandalism. I've seen this behavior on this article before using what I think is the same source. I believe this editor is an indef. blocked editor. I'm going through the history now - just fyi. -- Ave Caesar ( talk) 00:08, 21 May 2008 (UTC) reply
I looked into it and couldn't find it. Eh, perhaps I was mistaken or it could have been on a different article involving race. I'm not sure. -- Ave Caesar ( talk) 05:38, 22 May 2008 (UTC) reply

Edit warring at John Howard

Hi Master of Puppets. Glad to hear from you. Basically the arguments are being stated at the bottom of the John Howard talk page. There is a problem when adding new content to the John Howard article. There exists are small group of editors who revert it as soon as it's added. Sounds like something out of a Dr Seuss book. Usually, reverts occur seconds after content is added. Reverting to quickly delete content should only be used in cases where there is vandalism, or if someone has inserted libellous content. None of these apply in this case. Referenced material that has been covered by hundreds of major news outlets should be treated differently to that. Added to this, there is a sizable number of editors who have stated that they are in favour of retaining the content, so to use the quick delete method is really not appropriate. Will talk more. Regards Lester 05:55, 23 May 2008 (UTC) reply

The reverting starts happening when content is added that may be perceived as putting Prime Minister John Howard in a poor light. It happens when anyone adds content that is perceived as negative to John Howard. Regardless of how many references from major media outlets or major publishers are provided. Lester 06:02, 23 May 2008 (UTC) reply
Lester perhaps sees the collaborative approach in a different light because it is his edits which are being reverted, and these edits are uniformly consistent in their political approach. It is not a matter of removing criticism of John Howard. Legitimate criticism is expected if an article is to have balance and credibility, and many of John Howard's actions richly deserve criticism. The article has much recently-added criticism which I have not "reverted within seconds". However, I will not stand by and watch a good article nibbled away at, slanted a phrase or sentence at a time, to the point where it is not useful information so much as polemic. If Lester had his way, the John Howard article would be one long thundering tirade of hatred. Sweetly phrased, of course, and all duly sourced and wikiformatted.
Lester apparently regards edit-warring as something other people do, and I am disappointed that when he was backed into a corner on the RfC, with no consensus for inclusion and no strong support for his actions, he chose to take his crusade back to the article. I reverted him once, with a comment about process, and have since then left the article alone. I suspect that the catalyst for Lester's resumption was this edit of mine, in which I removed a comment that was inappropriate for the lead. Presumably this came up on Lester's watchlist, and sparked a desire to scratch that Skyring itch.
I'm happy to go along with consensus, but it is quite clear that this has eluded us so far. -- Pete ( talk) 01:08, 24 May 2008 (UTC) reply

  • MoP: Please do not talk about me behind my back (your "Re: Eco" section on BB110's Talk Page). That is not mature and it holds me up to ridicule (which I find astonishing, considering the recent offline opportunities I steered your way!). Also, MoP, it may be a good idea to just delete this whole section -- the matter is already solved. Ecoleetage ( talk) 19:03, 26 May 2008 (UTC) reply
    • "Behind your back" would be through email or somewhere off of Wikipedia. The fact that they're doing it out in the open, on Wikipedia, where anyone can see it, means they're not trying to "behind your back". Nothing in the message on Basketball110's page that Master of Puppets sent is remotely close to being talking about you behind your back. All it is is a thank you: "Thanks for stepping in, I appreciate having you at my back." Where does it insinuate that they're talking bad about you and hoping you'd never find out? More invicility and flagrant violation of established Wikipedia rules by Jeffreyneave

Hello there. We are having trouble again with sockpuppets of Jeffreyneave. For example, see this. He has no intention of abiding by Wikipedia rules and is bent on making life miserable for editors who do. Can you do something? This is the record of your previous involvement. Thanks! Tennis expert ( talk) 01:20, 26 May 2008 (UTC) reply

If you believed a block of Jeffreyneave and his sockpuppets were necessary to protect Wikipedia (which is my belief), then here is my recommendation. (1) Semiprotect World number one male tennis player rankings so that anonymous IP accounts cannot edit the article. This is practically the only article Jeffreyneave likes to edit. (2) Block Jeffreyneave's main account (he used it yesterday to make disruptive edits). (3) Because his anonymous IP accounts now appear to be static, block 78.86.157.90 and 212.85.28.67 (not ranges). (4) Contact his Internet providers if the preceding doesn't work. Just suggestions.... Thanks again for your help (past and future)! Tennis expert ( talk) 18:57, 26 May 2008 (UTC) reply

Little help...

Hey Master of Puppets, since you're an adopter of Ecoleetage, I was wondering if you could look at this note I left at his talk page. He replied to it less than positively here and deleted the note I left as nonsense. Do you find anything wrong in what I said? It essentially does appear to be begging people for barnstars and recognition, which reflects poorly on him. Was I out of line, or do you think I was okay in what I said? Or is it just a case of an overly-sensitive user? Thanks, Metros ( talk) 02:35, 27 May 2008 (UTC) reply

Talking behind backs, barnstars, stuff

Thank you so much for the vote of confidence.

I have to contradict a certain editor who has been turning up on this page by stating that I am not begging for barnstars or any recognition. As I have said several times, I have been frustrated lately over what I am perceiving as abusive and patronizing commentary from people I am trying to work with. Maybe it is just too much muck piling up all at once, or maybe it is a combo of online and offline muck (offline hasn't been a day at the beach for me, either). In any event, I didn't get the impression that my work was appreciated -- perhaps I vented my frustration in a rambling manner (and please remember that English is not my primary language, so often it sort of comes out screwy).

I greatly appreciate your support and friendship. Be well. Ecoleetage ( talk) 03:38, 27 May 2008 (UTC) reply

Hi, thanks for the offer of help. But I can't seem to narrow it down to what it is I need help with -- like everything, maybe? I think IRC is much more difficult to learn, for me anyway, than Wikipedia. I can copy things I see from the edit windows, etc. But, I see all these "templates", which I've found some, such as citation needed and who?, but do not know if there is a place where all the templates are located. I know there are many, I just don't know where to look. Also the larger templates, banners? for whole sections, etc. Is there a cheat sheet somewhere for these types of things? Oh, I've been to WP:V and WP:RS and found some there, but I don't see some of the templates I've seen on some other articles. I can't show you an example now, because I don't remember were I saw the particular banner template. Thanks again. -- KGBarnett ( talk) 03:52, 29 May 2008 (UTC) reply

You deleted this article. I had many sources available and references including an article in the Toronto Star. It is significant because it is a camp which was around for more than 50 years. as far as summer camps go that is significant. camps pop up all the time but few last for very long let alone for over 50 years. I also have two more articles from the Toronto Star talking about the camp but I had not added them yet. There is more significance listed here than there is for 70% of the camps listed on Wikipedia. I didn't just create a stub that says it was a camp located in an area without any other information about it. Significance is also evident in the fact that my sources are the Trent University Archives which saw fit to keep information about it, and the Burk's Falls and District Historical Society which displays camp materials in their museum as the camp has made a great impact on the community. Significance should be implied when a museum puts items from it on display. I was told after the first deletion that what I needed was a couple of sources and the article could go back up. Can you please undelete this article now? Also why was this just deleted without me getting some kind of warning that it was going to be deleted so I could defend it or add information? Magnetawan ( talk) 08:48, 29 May 2008 (UTC) reply

Further what makes any summer camp significant? This article had just been posted for the second time after I fixed all the complaints I had after the first time it was deleted. Summer camps are important as with this one as they are places where the children of today are shaped and molded into the great people they become tomorrow. summer camps area major part of the lives of many children and this camp was an important place to many many people from around the world. children came from Canada, US, Mexico, Spain, Hungary and other countries just to attend. the article was still a continues work in progress and i think you were to quick to delete the article. as i stated before museum and university archives have all seen fit to record and maintain a history of this camp becuase it is important, significant, and notable. The camp was founded in the 1940's and operated for more than half a century with thousands of children attending, and returning year after year. The camp didn't even need to advertise, it maintained and continued to operate just by word of mouth, and generatoins of families sending their children and grandchildren because it was that good. the only reason it closed down which i also intended to write about was because the health of the old man who founded the camp was failing and he couldn't continue running it and couldn't let it go to pass it on to someone else. This article didn't fit the criteria for speedy deletion. I reposted the article because I felt it passed all the criteria for speedy deletion this time around and therefore could continue to improve it online with time and allow others to contribute as well. Obviously I am not Roscoep007, rather an editor with around 9,500 edits, who has contributed to FAs, GAs and DYKs, received a number of Barnstars for my work on Australian related articles and never been blocked. I've got to have all the awards done by July 15th, and I don't even have the first one finished yet.

I'm looking for someone who knows how (or is interested in jumping in and learning how) to work on images in xcf format using GIMP, or Inkscape, etc. (Because I and others will need to be able to edit each image's layers after you are done with it).

If this sounds like something you are interested in helping with, please drop me a note.

By the way, both GIMP and Inkscape are free, making it easy to get started from scratch.

I look forward to your reply.

First of all, a layer-supporting file format that we both have will need to be used for the working file. I or others may need to work on various layers, and not all of us have PS. (I don't - I've been using GIMP, and will be trying Inkscape soon).
Does PS support the xcf format?

New question: someone who doesn't take no for an answer

New question: how do you handle someone like this? [3]? This guy isn't giving up, but he also isn't getting his way. What is the best way to approach this editor? Thanks! Ecoleetage ( talk) 20:13, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Since I posted this, of course, someone chimed in on that page with a Level 1 warning, which makes sense. But then I would ask: what happens if this editor persists in reintroducing material that is repeatedly deleted. Where do you go from there? Thanks! Ecoleetage ( talk) 20:41, 2 June 2008 (UTC) reply
That leads me to another question: where do I read up on Levels 1-4 Warnings? Also, in regard to emphasizing positives rather than negatives, is there any way you can provide input on the case of this guy: [4]? I've discovered his situation and it appears he's gotten a raw deal -- actually, from someone who recently visited this page. I am interested in working with him to get him focused (which is a screwy idea, given I am in need of direction myself). However, I need to get him out of WP exile (he's in a one month spell -- ideally, I would like to see a sympathetic admin intervene and reduce his sentence to two weeks, if not completely forgive him his trespasses). Can you provide any assistance there? Thanks! Ecoleetage ( talk) 00:10, 3 June 2008 (UTC) reply
Thanks for the lead on WP:Warn -- I will read up on that. With the other matter, it appears that too many people insist that they want him to change his ways, but they are doing nothing help him. I've communicated with him both online and offline and I found him to be very, very intelligent -- I don't condone his previous clowning, but I am also not fixated on his mistakes. In other cases, I've seen admins reduce and erase existing blocks -- is that normally frowned upon, or is that something you would be willing to do in this case, just to get the rehab process moving instead of waiting another three weeks? (I am talking about his current one month block, not the topic ban -- that's another matter.) Thanks again! Ecoleetage ( talk) 00:33, 3 June 2008 (UTC) reply
P.S. If you actually review his record carefully, there appears to be some very questionable rulings against this editor -- including a two-week block for his correcting a typo. Plus, a single admin appears to have made it his mission to target this editor (the lack of "community" input here isn't difficult to identify). I'm not lobbying you to provide aid to this editor -- no other admin is willing to do so. However, an objective outsider could possibly detect more than a bit of malice in the handling of this case. An objective outsider can wonder if the editor in question is actually getting a fair deal -- especially when you consider that someone we know literally got away with sockpuppetry and vandalism, despite the awareness by several admins to these actions (I guess it's not what you know, but who you know). Okay, thanks (again) for listening. Ecoleetage ( talk) 01:57, 3 June 2008 (UTC) reply

Ah, we have to agree to disagree. If you ask: "Does that mean that everything CNS covers is notable? No, of course not." Well, what's to say that everything covered by the Globe & Mail or the New York Times is notable? All news is not inherently notable (especially if it involves Angelina Jolie). The question is whether the source is reliable and recognized. As an international news service that's been around since 1920, I think Catholic News Service's reputation is fairly solid. Thanks. RE: Cell Change

Hey, MoP

I made that change to "Cell" because while the 'hive-mentality' was indeed a crucial plot point, I felt it was a bit of a spoiler in that particular section of the article. My feeling is if it's not on the back of the book then is shouldn't be on the description section of the book's wiki-article. Plot details like that, IMO, should be reserved for the PLOT DESCRIPTION sections. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shadowtron ( talkcontribs) 12:18, 14 August 2008 (UTC) reply

Dereks1x sock

Um, MoP, why did you unblock a sockpuppet of Dereks1X [12]? Considering he socked his way to admin account Archtransit and has been banned by the community on several occasions, in several incarnations, I am rather disappointed with the boldness of your actions. I see that the RFCU came back as unlikely, but I would have hoped you contacted the blocking admin or a checkuser before deciding to unblock. MBisanz talk 18:50, 25 August 2008 (UTC) reply

The RFCU proves that I am not a sock. Master of Puppets' wisdom is shown as I have been constructive (pissed off at Wikipedia, mainly). Blocks are suppose to prevent damage to Wikipedia so if no damage occurs, the people who then advocate blocking do it for blood and punishment. The people who accused me used the logic of "anyone who I disagree with can be banned by being called a sock".

Master of Puppets, I will continue to show that you are a smart person by showing I edit Wikipedia well. You need to stick to your guns and don't let Bobblehead and Tvoz scheme to block everyone they hate. They are scheming now per their talk pages. Please don't let them control Wikipedia and use it as a political campaign tool. You can do this by protecting me as long as I edit responsibly.

Their use of the term "MO" is just an excuse to block others. Since they both use the term, using their logic, they are displaying behavioral evidence of sockpuppetry. Oprahwasontv ( talk) 00:35, 26 August 2008 (UTC) reply

As a heads-up, I have reblocked Oprahwasontv ( talk · contribs). He's a quite clear match behaviorally for Dereks1x, and even putting that aside he's editing combatively and disruptively in a "hot zone". Please let me know of any concerns with the reblock, but as you can see a couple of admins have had recent concerns with the behavior and sockiness of this account. Collectionian reverting

I notice you commented on this issue on his talk page already, so I thought I'd raise it with you rather than bother with anything formal at this stage. His tagging of the article for Muten Roshi as lacking notability has no consensus basis, and in fact defies consensus. There was an AfD listing arguments and sources for his notability, and the talk page notes in detail evidence like good hits and so on which also go to notability. The consensus is clearly in favour of his notability (albeit with the article being fixed up alot). The merge "discussion" provides neither evidence nor consensus for tagging for noteability, and he keeps reverting me when I fix the page. Can you please tell him to stop until he actually provides an argument or some consensus on this? JJJ999 ( talk) 01:19, 28 September 2008 (UTC) reply

MoP, I know you're a fair admin and will, of course, actually look at the whole issue here with JJJ999. I already provided an explanation to him regarding the tagging of Master Roshi - the concerns were brought up in the merge discussion, and the tag does not deny any consensus, only JJJ999's personal opinion). I've already asked another admin to look at his actions, including his denying consensus, false accusations of "stealth deletion" and "submarine merging" starting a deletion review on a valid merge discussion the canvassing for opinions of it, and being generally disruptive. A he has again removed the tag after his "reporting", I'll let you or the admin I reported him to decide whether to put it back and how to deal with him. Thanks. -- Collectonian ( talk · contribs) 01:23, 28 September 2008 (UTC) reply
  • Look at the talk page and the merge discussion. Look at the old AfD. Where in any of that is the "consensus" or evidence to add noteability concerns? On the other hand, the overwhelming consensus on both, especially the talk page and AfD which had real participation, is that he is notable. You keep saying you've proven the contrary, but where? JJJ999 ( talk) 01:27, 28 September 2008 (UTC) reply
Also I'll take the admin who just warned you not to cause 3R ahead of the one who is your friend thanks. Here is the link to the merge discussion, seems very clear in favour of noteability. The talk page and old AfD are even more in favour, and provide evidence. This guy is lying- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:List_of_Dragon_Ball_characters#Master_Roshi plus the overwhelming number of google hits provide the common sense assumption that there is noteability. He seems to be confusing "needs sources" (which it does) which some question about noteability (which there has never been a basis for) JJJ999 ( talk) 01:29, 28 September 2008 (UTC) reply
There is no notability asserted. Google hits are not notability. Your random assertions are not notability. Notability is nothing more than clear, significant coverage by sources independent of the topic, which are not present here at all. The discussions on Talk:List of Dragon Ball characters were closed correctly and you basically are the only dissenting voice to a consensus that has already formed. And no, I will not recuse myself from the discussion when I am a neutral party and have no association with the discussion. That I have collaborated with Collectonian in the past has zero bearing on the present discussion. sephiroth bcr ( converse) 01:48, 28 September 2008 (UTC) reply
Oh, to MoP, I've protected Master Roshi, the page they were edit warring on. JJJ999 has also inappropriately filed a deletion review of the merge discussions on Talk:List of Dragon Ball characters here. Aside from that, this appears to be nothing really more than a content dispute to be resolved; that said, your input is definitely welcome into the process. sephiroth bcr ( converse) 01:51, 28 September 2008 (UTC) reply
If noteability was the same as "you didn't add 10 souces" then we wouldn't bother to distinguish between the 2 with tags. The sheer amount of information out there, the fact he was a very notable character in a manga and anime that sold hundreds of millions of copies, and the fact there has been some evidence for noteability and consensus to it, and none against, makes the claim that I need to first "show noteability" strange. I didn't remove the tag for sources, it needs them, I removed the one for noteability, which has support as I alluded to above, and which you now need to build consensus against, not the other way around! JJJ999 ( talk) 01:56, 28 September 2008 (UTC) reply
Notability, as Wikipedia treats is, is again, significant coverage by reliable sources independent of the topic. This coverage is commentary specifically addressing the character in reputable sources, and is not simply the fame or importance you are putting forward. And no, the onus is on you to assert that notability exists through providing this coverage via sources, not the other way around. sephiroth bcr ( converse) 02:05, 28 September 2008 (UTC) reply
I'm afraid I have to agree with Sephiroth and Collectonian, JJJ999. Could you provide some links to this consensus that you spoke of? Master of Puppets Call me MoP! :) 19:18, 28 September 2008 (UTC) reply
    • Fortunately other mods have read it already and come to point out how absurd the closures are, so I needn't trouble you further. I'll deal with it after the discussion on the Talk page. For the record, it's obvious where the consensus for noteability is, because the majority of the votes on the talk discussion are to keep, the last AfD was closed (and frankly should have been a clear keep based on the reasons and the other AfDs of the time), and the talk page has clearly always supported notability for Roshi. Hearing you suggest you can't find it is astounding to be honest. JJJ999 ( talk) 07:41, 29 September 2008 (UTC) reply

RE: Image deletion

You said: If you'd like to reupload this image and you are indeed the creator, please remove the watermark

First - what I am about to say is not a personal attack on you but a comment on the way this issue has been handled.

I will stress what I said on the image page - I am the photographer and I own all rights. How I choose to license any of my images in up to me and me alone. The License I chose is:

This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 United States License. To view a copy of this license, visit http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/3.0/us/ or send a letter to Creative Commons, 171 Second Street, Suite 300, San Francisco, California, 94105, USA.

I do not think you, or any other mod, took the time to read what I posted on the images talk page and the clear citations of the Wiki rules as they apply to my images and how the images are allowed and should not be deleted. If you, or any mod, had taken the time to read and not just delete I would have seen the discussion on the topic. There were none.

As for your specific comments to me: perhaps you are not a photographer or, if you are, you have no objections to your work being given away without any form of protection. That is fine if so, however as I would never tell you how to release your photographs or work I would appreciate you not telling me how I can, or can not, license my work. Your comment implies I am not the photographer but if I really were all I have to do to prove it is to upload a "clean" image. After 30 years in the industry I can say this with all seriousness - Do you think I am stupid?

Ignored report at AIV

I just thought you might want to take a look at what happened when I took the ignored report to AIV. I am somewhat upset ... this was a clearly a report that could have been handled immediately at AIV. Instead, I had to wander over to ANI, where such things get quickly lost. Because things get lost and delayed by everyone's desire to discuss things, I had to move the report to get people to notice it. About three times as much work, and a much slower response time. Now that my mistaken block has been removed, I'll reply here. Inserting copyright violations and obvious violations of the fair use policy is vandalism. That's why reverting it is a specific exemption to WP:3RR, a permitted use of rollback, etc. Blocking a user that vandalises in exactly the same way again as his only edit once a block is lifted, has ignored all previous warnings, and has made no effort to communicate despite having his vandalism reverted over a dozen times isn't hair trigger at all ... it's normal procedure. What to do?

Hi, it's me again. Goingoveredge on the potential superpower page has accused us of pushing POV, and calling us indophobics (calling me an indophobic when I'm of indian descent, weird, huh), and accusing us of owning. Even after you told him to stop that. He also calls the author of one of our sources a neo-facist neoconservative who lives outside the mainsteam academic despite the fact that Parag Khanna is one of the most respected members in International Relations and Geopolitics. Also, accusing our sources of being written by a guy of racist ideology. While we're still reviewing the sources he's put because some of us have concerns that the sources he's putting only have to do with why it's a potential ______(ex. Military) superpower and not an full fleged potential superpower. So, you already warned all of us, you already told us not to make unfair accusations, so I don't know what to do?
