I'll have to check, but I thought I just used National Atlas for that one - what did you find in the National Atlas that was different? For the bit in Mexico I would've used the Hydro1K and DCW links on my source page. NHD I only use for small rivers so definitely didn't use it here, you'd have to combine a lot of files to do the Gila, although it could be useful for doing a Santa Cruz specific map, I use the files arranged by 4-digit HUC on their ftp site at ftp://nhdftp.usgs.gov/DataSets/Staged/SubRegions/FileGDB/HighResolution/. Thanks again. The problem was that the Santa Cruz and San Pedro Rivers were not correct in the National Atlas data. For example, the file shows the Santa Cruz running into the Gila. In any case, it was helpful to hear that you needed to use multiple data sets and that you have also seen errors in the files. I ended up working with a file from ALRIS along with National Atlas and did a little freehand drawing in order to make it work. More recently I've taken to using VectorMap rather than DCW, it's cleaned up quite a bit. For all maps I'll factcheck against a commercial atlas as all datasets have errors. Checking I did indeed use National Atlas, but it looks like they've changed the linework since I downloaded it, the version I have has the break before the Gila, looks like someone "corrected" it and introduced the error. Hi, Karl. In expanding the stubby articles linked to from List of longest streams of Oregon, I've found one entry on the list that doesn't make sense, and I don't see quite how to fix it. Dry Creek's coordinates match a stream that empties into either Bogus Creek or the Owyhee River, but our longest-streams list says that Dry Creek is a tributary of Crooked Creek and joins it near Burns Junction. I can't figure out by looking at topo maps which Dry Creek in southeastern Oregon is 53 miles long, and I am flummoxed by the National Hydrography Dataset and its tutorials, which I find impenetrable. The coordinates there are wrong, the description of the mouth and the location on the map are correct - if you're looking at a topo map, find the mouth of Crooked Creek and Owyhee, this Dry Creek is the first major tributary working your way upstream along Crooked Creek, immediately after the Crooked Creek State Wayside and before Rattlesnake Creek. It's entry in GNIS is ID=1120133 which gives the correct coordinates (mouth: 42.7948797, -117.7462685; source: 42.5084903, -117.2954206). The length I had calculated from NHD is 86.344 km. Another potential source of info, in the Watershed Boundary Dataset it's HUC is 1705010904. Looks like it has a couple of reservoirs, Rockhouse and Blevens, and an additional one on a trib, Scott Res. on Indian Fork Creek. Other named tribs are Peacock Creek and Coyote Creek. The Dry Creek that empties into the Owyhee is also fairly long, but fell just short of our cutoff. Kmusser ( talk) 16:15, 13 March 2011 (UTC) reply

Looks like the NHD has been updated since I last checked it, I just recalculated the length and got 86.562 km. The drainage basin area is 191,224 acres in WBD. Some stats on the tribs which might also be useful: Indian Fort Creek = 38.995 km (30,288 acres for its basin); Corbin Creek which I missed the first time = 24.879 km (24,482 acres); Peacock Creek = 18.485 km (25,957 acres); Coyote Creek = 9.87 km (basin not defined). Looks nice, although the name may have to change eventually as other Dry Creek (Owyhee) would arguably be more notable, it's 10 miles shorter, but it has the larger drainage basin and is permanent rather than intermittent. To add to the confusion there is yet another Dry Creek of significant length in that same general area (Jordan Creek trib). Dry Creek (Oregon) should probably be a disambig page eventually. On a related note, does the NHD have an easily accessible text file or Excel file maybe that lists stream lengths, or do the lengths have to be summed reach by reach somehow? In my current state of ignorance, I would not have been able to create the Dry Creek list, and I'm not able to verify stream lengths added by other editors to articles I've worked on or have a continuing interest in. Yes and no, the trick is just that the NHD files are so large (Oregon is 2.3 GB, 1.7 million records) you need to do some queries to get the data down to something that Excel can handle. You need something that can open geodatabase files, and ideally map it as well as visualizing it definitely helps. I'm using ArcGIS, but I suspect there is shareware out there that can too. Once open they are basically a giant spreadsheet. Streams lengths do need to be summed, but it does have the GNIS ID in there, so you can select by that and do subtotals pretty easily. What it doesn't have is what state stuff is in, so for the Dry Creeks I had to locate them on the map to see whether or not they were in Oregon (there are NHD files grouped by state, but they don't cut off at the state line). Raw NHD files are at ftp://nhdftp.usgs.gov/ (DataSets/Staged will get you into the right directories) - I put a sample of my Dry Creek query with some of the extra fields deleted out just so you can take a peek at http://www.fantasymaps.com/stuff/dry_creek.xlsx Also to note, just like the GNIS I do occasionally find errors in it, so I'll still usually check it against a topo map - in the list I just did one length of Willow Creek had Dry Creeks GNIS code which you can't tell from the spreadsheet but was pretty obvious when mapped. Thanks for the map File:Tibet provinces.png. However, I'm a bit puzzled by it. It calls itself "Tibet provinces", but is a map of languages. Ladakhi is missing. The red would appear to be the Central Tibetan languages, but is missing the varieties of Ladakh, Qinghai, Sikkim, and Bhutan. What the sentence is saying is that Amdo is a northeastern region, not that Qinghai is the northeastern part of Amdo. Actually, since the border area between Qinghai and the TAR is so sparsely inhabited (and probably mostly by nomads) it may be hard to say whether Amdo does or does not extend beyond Qinghai. There's an Amdo County in the TAR, but it could be misnamed (which is what Wikipedia says, albeit with a source).

Actually, Kmusser's map is arguably inaccurate insofar as Ü-Tsang properly does not extend as far as shown: it's really just the more densely populated area around Lhasa, Shigatse, and Gyantse. But people seem to be getting in the habit of describing the whole area west of Kham and Amdo as Ü-Tsang because it's easier than saying "Ü, Tsang, Lhokha, Ngari, Changthang, etc. so in this context I think it's okay to show Ü-Tsang with the wider boundaries.— Greg Pandatshang ( talk) 01:56, 28 March 2011 (UTC) reply

Hi. I really like File:Masscolony.png, but I've got a few somewhat picky issues with it, based on recent delvings into early Massachusetts history. I wondering if you might be able to work some of these into the image:

• Mass Bay claimed and administered Block Island by right of conquest in the Pequot War. See citations in Massachusetts Bay Colony.
• Mass Bay claimed and administered an area around Stonington, Connecticut by right of conquest in the Pequot War. Also cited in Massachusetts Bay Colony.
• The map does not address the many border issues Mass Bay and successors had with RI, especially the communities on the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay. This has a very messy history, lasting into the 19th century, whose details I don't know well. The eastern shore communities were transferred from MA to RI in 1746.
• The 1691 Mass Bay charter included Nova Scotia (i.e present NS+NB, or all of Acadia) in the Province of Massachusetts Bay; this claim was effectively nullified by the Treaty of Ryswick, which confirmed French possession of Acadia.
• The islands (Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, and the Elizabeth Islands) were part of the Province of New York ( Dukes County, Province of New York) before going to Mass in 1691 charter.
• New Hampshire was not "part of Massachusetts" in 1688-1691; both were part of the Dominion of New England (1686-1689). NH was without government 1689-1691, and was ruled de facto by the Mass Bay governor.
• Massachusetts held land claims for the "Narrangansett Country" (now Washington County, Rhode Island). I am uncertain as to the time frames of this claim, but it was extinguished during the first Mass Bay charter.

I'm not sure there is really room in the image to explain all of these, but marking some of these areas as "once claimed/controlled by Massachusetts", might be one way to approach it.

Thanks for the comments, all the RI border issues really aren't going to show up at that scale - they need their own map to be shown properly. I got into some of that with the Plymouth map and it is indeed messy. Part of the reason I don't have a RI map as part of the series. Note that border issues with CT aren't shown for the same reason, they wouldn't show up, they are on the CT map. Nova Scotia is already in the map. I think the islands are ok as well, it already says they joined Mass in 1691 and they are shown on the NY map as leaving NY in 1691. I did fix the NH note. Hello Karl, hope all is well with you. There's been a flurry of activity on the Ganges River page recently, but a lack of good, modern maps. I was thinking of making a new map myself, but realistically am unlikely to get to it. So I thought I'd ping you. I notice you made the map on the Brahmaputra River page, File:Brahmaputrarivermap.png, long ago. I'm thinking of a map showing the Ganges and Brahmaputra (and Meghna River), since they are so closely related, perhaps also showing their watersheds separately somehow (something like this ugly map maybe). I've been trying to figure out the complex mesh of rivers in the Ganges Delta and the complexity of it reminded me your comment about working out the Finger Lake drainage system. It seems to me that a map showing the full Ganges-Brahmaputra basin would not be able to show much detail of the delta region, and have myself been slowly making a map of just the delta. One of my goals was to have a map that was readable at the size it was used in articles. I could add a few, but if I add anything close to the level of detail you had they would be too small to be seen. I purposely did not overwrite the other map so that editors could pick and choose between them. I don't mind if you revert. You might also consider using the original CIA map if you want more detail, the reason your version was brought to the Map Workshop to be fixed was that you cut off a bunch of the original labels. I have another request. :-) This one is a bit more complex. There's absolutely no rush, but if it's something you'd be willing to do, it would be most helpful: Pan Am Railways, a holding company that operates freight railroads in New England and New York. The corporate entity that operates the various rail lines is called Springfield Terminal Railway Company. I've seen this abbreviated on various maps/atlases as ST, STRR, STRY, or GRS (Pan Am Railways was known as Guilford Rail System until 2006). Some maps, even recent ones, still label PAR's lines with the names of the predecessor companies: Boston & Maine Corporation (BM), Maine Central Railroad Company (MEC), and Portland Terminal Company (PTM). Long story short, I'm not sure how easy or difficult it would be to make this map, but if it's something you'd like to take on, it would be a huge improvement for the article! I love your maps! I use them in teaching U.S. History. I am hoping you would tackle making a map similar to the one you did of Oklahoma/Indian territory that simplifies in a colorful way the indian reservations/agencies that existed during and at the end of the Indian Wars. Thanks, do you have a good source for that sort of thing? Oklahoma was easy as the Census Bureau uses the former reservations as statistical areas, but I don't have a source for other historical reservation boundaries. I did one map for the Sioux with historical boundaries on it based on the actual treaty descriptions and that was difficult enough just for the one reservation. Hello Kmusser. Sometime ago [3] you created maps for the barrios of Ponce [4] and I have been busy adding to those 31 articles during the last 18 months. I am now to the point of working 1 or 2 of them into GA status. Thanks!

However I am been working in the last few months on another concurrent project, the 14 rivers of Ponce ( [5]).

My question is, do you make maps of rivers and, if so, could you develop them for me to add to the 14 river articles?

Kmusser, hope you had a great Thanksgiving!!!

Hey the map looks great, great, great!!! There is one error though: the diagram is showing the old path for Río Portugués. But the river was diverted about 30 years ago by the USA Corps of Engineers and, now, once it "exits" the urban area of Ponce (which you marked in pink), instead of heading south-southWEST as you have it showing, the river actually heads south-southEAST to feed into Río Bucaná. (See HERE)

Other than that if you could

• (1) Move the name "Prieto" further south, so there is no ambiguity as to what river is the portion between the mouth of Rio Blanco and the mouth of Rio San Patricio. (It is a part of Prieto, not part of Blanco).
• (2) Reduce the size of the letters used for naming the rivers, so they wont be bumping into each other (reduction for all the names would be ideal to keep point size consistent, but at least Matilde and Portugues seem to need more room)
• (3) Is there a way to superimpose the map of Ponce barrios ( THIS one) so they could be used as a reference to the relative location of the 14 rivers?

On point 1, both the topo map and GNIS label that section as part of Rio Cerrillos and have the mouths of the Blanco and Prieto at the same point, do you have something that says otherwise? At any rate will adjust labels to be unambiguous. Can fix the others, font sizes are always tricky in svg because it isn't wysiwyg and I was trying to make them big enough to be readable in the thumbnail. Looks like it already got dealt with, when I made that list I only included the largest rivers, there are actually 11 streams called Kaso in Indonesia (8 in SW Java, 1 in central Java, 1 in Borneo, and 1 in Sulawesi), but I think most of those are very small. For what it's worth Ci is just river in the local dialect (I assume Sundanese), so it could be either Ci Kaso (local spelling) or Kaso River (translated). My main reference for that sort of thing is Geonet ( http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/index.html). Kmusser ( talk) 04:33, 11 December 2011 (UTC) reply
