The 2010 WikiCup begins tomorrow!

Welcome to the biggest WikiCup Wikipedia has yet seen! Round one will take place over two months, and finish on February 26. There is only one pool, and the top 64 will progress. The competition will be tough, as more than half of the current competitors will not make it to round 2. Details about scoring have been finalized and are explained at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Please make sure you're familiar with the scoring rules, because any submissions made that violate these rules will be removed. Like always, the judges can be reached through the WikiCup talk pages, on their talk page, or over IRC with any issues concerning anything tied to the Cup. We will keep in contact with you via weekly newsletters; if you do not want to receive them, please remove yourself from the list here. Conversely, if a non-WikiCup participant wishes to receive the newsletters, they may add themselves to that list. Well, enough talk- get writing! Your submission's page is located here. Details on how to submit your content is located here, so be sure to check that out! Once content has been recognized, it can be added to your submissions page, from which our bot will update the main score table. Remember that only articles worked on and nominated during the competition are eligible for points. Have fun, and good luck! Garden, iMatthew, J Milburn, and The ed17 19:20, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

Hi Jujutacular. By consensus an AfD runs for seven days. Forcing an early closure was seen to be inappropriate unless it met the criteria in Wikipedia:Speedy keep or Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion. This AfD was originally closed on the same day it opened, therefore it has not had seven days for people to consider the matter. The reasoning behind keeping an AfD open for seven days are varied, and include the sense that people may pile on initially to either iVote for a delete or keep, but that opinion can change when others join the discussion with information or views not initially presented. See Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion#How_an_AfD_discussion_is_closed for more info. If you have any further questions, please get in touch. SilkTork * YES! 22:47, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

While I agree that the original close was early and innappropriate, the fact that it has been listed on the AFD queue for 8 days now with 1 delete !vote meant to me that consensus was clear. If you do feel that strongly though I will not interfere. Thanks for the kind note. Jujutacular  T ·  C 00:04, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
I know what you are saying, because it looks like it has had 8 days - but for 7 of those it was a closed listing and people would not have looked at it. It's a minor thing anyway, and will no doubt end up as a keep, but I do feel strongly that we need to keep an eye on AfDs being closed too early, and to let people know that it is no longer acceptable. There was a period when early closures got out of hand, and we had to clamp down on it, so it's worth keeping an eye out to make sure we don't start slipping back! Regards again. SilkTork * YES! 00:43, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
On returning with a fresh mind, you were right to revert my close. I'm sorry this turned into a little mess, I see that it has since again been closed. However, I will take the lesson to heart. I haven't been around for very long and I probably still have a ton more to learn. I'll add it to my list . Thanks again for the calm demeanor when correcting me. Happy editing! Copyright Question

I noticed that you are involved with featured sound candidates a bit. I have actually done quite a bit of recording in the past. In particular I recorded a performance of the TSO Chorus singing a number of pieces. I believe the pieces are in the public domain and I own the copyright to the recording. Is there any sort of copyright associated with the particular performance that I have to worry about before uploading them? Noodle snacks ( talk) 23:32, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

Has the orchestra released the performance into the public domain? I'm not an expert, but I believe it could be likened to taking a photograph of a piece of art. If the piece of art has been released into the public domain, then the photograph can be released. Likewise I think a recording of the the orchestra could be released if the orchestra has OK'd it. Again I'm no expert, but that's my take on it. I'll read up a bit and see if I can find anything useful to help you. Let me know what you think. Jujutacular  T ·  C 03:42, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
Clarification: the issue of the piece being in the public domain is separate from the issue of the performance being in the public domain. For instance, I made a recording of Sor's Opus 31 No 1. The piece itself is in the public domain since it was composed in the 1828. However I could claim copyright over my specific performance of the piece. Jujutacular  T ·  C 04:07, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, that is what I was asking. The pieces are in the public domain, the performance isn't. I suppose I could try and get permission, though I'm not sure how one would make it official for wiki upload. Noodle snacks ( talk) 05:01, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
You could ask, then get someone from WP:OTRS to help you out in making it official. It says they deal with "grants of license for donated media". Jujutacular  T ·  C 05:17, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
I will do that when I get back from an upcoming holiday. Noodle snacks ( talk) 22:53, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Featured sound

Hello, I have uploaded a different file of an expanded version of the Masked lovebirds song. I replaced all uses as opposed to adding it as an alternative, so I would appreciate if you reassess the audio and decide if you want to retain your support. Thanks! -- Zoo Fari 18:23, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 and Dermatology-related content

I noticed that you are participating in the 2010 WikiCup. I have been working on the Bolognia push which is a project to make sure Wikipedia has an article (or redirect) on every know cutaneous condition. With that being said, there are still many cutaneous condition stubs to be made, and Bolognia could be a source for a lot of DYK articles, etc. Therefore, I was thinking maybe we could help one another... a competative WikiCup that also serves to improve dermatologic content on Wikipedia. I could e-mail you the Bolognia login information if you have any interest? --- kilbad ( talk) 05:04, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

Bush FSC

Thanks for that! It also cleaned up a bit of static at the very start that I was having a problem fixing. Staxringold talk contribs 01:13, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

  • Actually, listening again there is a quick piece of static that pops up twice at about 1:20-1:23ish. Unfortunately it happens on top of Bush's voice, any chance you're better at filtering that out? Staxringold talk contribs 01:17, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
  • Thanks for that! The dead-air static/mic noise is easy to clean, but I never really mastered removing it atop actual sound. That's the last imperfection I hear, taking a quick listen. Staxringold talk contribs 01:23, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

I seen it in a video that he did. He plays it in the song "Operation." The video is on YouTube. Also, it says some other instruments on his MySpace. Mr. C.C. ( talk) 21:10, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 January newsletter

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. We've had some shakeups regarding late entries, flag changes and early dropouts, but the competition is now established- there will be no more flag changes or new competitors. Congratulations to Hungary Sasata ( submissions), our current leader, who, at the time of writing, has more listed points than Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn ( submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger ( submissions) (second and third place respectively) combined. A special well done also goes to Isle of Man Fetchcomms ( submissions)- his artcle Jewel Box (St. Louis, Missouri) was the first content to score points in the competition.

Around half of competitors are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. 64 of the 149 current competitors will advance to round 2- if you currently have no points, do not worry, as over half of the current top 64 have under 50 points. Everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places in round 2! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! Windows Rot RfD discussion

No, this isn't a "shoot the messenger" type of message, just an update. I have commented in the discussion (I, too, am neutral) that the editor proposing the deletion has conflated WP:DRV and WP:RfD, proffering an argument that is appropriate for deletion review and not the discussion of a deletion nomination for a redirect. In fact he/she has yet to proffer a basis for deletion for the redirect. I have just left a note on the editor's talk page to that effect, and mentioned that if no such justification is forthcoming in a timely fashion, I will be recommending a Speedy keep on procedural grounds. Of course, as the person positing the nomination, you have some options, too... B.Wind ( talk) 19:20, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

  • I won't be suggesting a speedy keep after all. I found the one sentence RfD justification that the editor posited amidst the DRV-style argument. Again, I've posted an update on the editor's talk page. B.Wind ( talk) 19:37, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
