Hey, thanks for doing all that hard work you're putting into the Pittsburgh Riverhounds article - you're really doing a great job and adding some valuable information. Just one small issue though... I noticed that you've been playing around with the formatting and colors and ordering of the sub-headings... I just wondered if you were aware that myself and several others have been working for the last 2 years to try to get a formal, standardized format for all USL2 and PDL team pages that includes specific colors and layouts in the year-by-year boxes. I understand you're being enthusiastic and everything, but can you please just take a moment to look at the other pages in your team's league to make sure that the templates don't get screwed up? {{helpme}} I've tried searching for my answer but couldn't find it. Could someone let me know if it's possible to change the text color of a citation number within an article. The instance is question is on the Pittsburgh Pirates seasons page where the names/nicknames are cited as they evolved. Hola! Hey, I noticed you moved the categories around on the Pittsburgh Riverhounds again, to match some other soccer team websites. Now, I absolutely know that you've put a LOT of hard work in to lots of articles about PA sports, including the Riverhounds article, and I know you're doing this in good faith... but I'm just wondering if we can't come to some kind of compromise here.

The thing is that I've been working on trying to get a set standard template and ordering system for all USL teams - USL1, USL2, PDL and W-League - for the past, oh, 2 years or so, and I thought I'd cracked it. My reason for doing it was because, quite frankly, until fairly recently, no-one bothered even trying to ensure that each time had up-to-date, accurate and detailed information on any of these teams, so I took up the mantle and spent months and months updating, writing club histories, researching player backgrounds, and so on. If you click on the update histories of all the USL2, PDL and W-League teams specifically, you'll see my name all over them.

What I'm wondering is whether you think it's more important for the Riverhounds article to match the category ordering for other sports teams in other countries, or whether it's better for it to match all the other American teams in its league system. I'm not trying to come across as pedantic; I really want your opinion. From my POV (biased, obviously, because I designed the ordering system), I would think it would be better to match all the other USL articles, because then the casual reader would be able to tell, at a glance, that the Riverhounds were part of the same hierarchical soccer structure, that the information included would be consistent with other teams in the league, and that there was an identifiable order to things - the reader would know that the roster came second, the year-by-year stats, third and so on... what do you think?

I want to make sure we're both happy with whatever we decide here, because we clearly both care a lot about the articles and want to make them as good and informative and accurate as possible, and it's a waste of both our times to keep reverting the other's category ordering system. Is there any way you could ask for the unprotection of the USMNT article? I would ask, but I don't think I'm supposed to because I was a party to the content dispute. I just want to clean up the section headings (the really ridiculous ones), and with Kevin being incommunicado for a while I don't see why the article should remain protected the whole time. Please don't replace YOB/YOD categories with Lifetime. Read instructions in the template's page. In the talk page I have stated many reasons why this substitution is not correct. Summarising I would say that: Lifetime confuses bots and tools, an extra template has to be rendered by the serves each time, offers no difference from the categories, it's confusing for newbies, it hides defaultost with many side-effects. For the Pirates article I am using the "First example of commonly used fields" of the Cite news template. I have used the same template in every article I've written and have never had a problem with it. There is no right or wrong way, as long as it stay consistent throughout; and as the primary editor to the article that is the style that I have decided to use. Hi, I read the link to the wiki guidelines on nationality and according to that it would seem that Sebrango should be listed as Cuban. It seems to me that there should be some sort of consideration for the fact that he defected from Cuba and is now a Canadian citizen, I'm sure there are other players with similar situations. Also, if you're going to change the players nationality in the article why would you only chane it once and leave the other 5 times his name appears beside a Canadian flag for someone else to change? Thanks for the compliment :) Unfortunately, I fear I may have screwed up a little with my naming convention - I created the all-time roster pages for all MLS, USL1 and USL2 teams with the same naming format (I was unaware of the other convention), so if we re-name them to match the style you indicated, we'll have to do all of them for consistency - but if you feel you would like to tackle this, please go ahead. Can you show me any discussion that has determined there is consensus to leave the schedule list as it is? It was my understanding that in the past improvements to the USMNT page were essentially impossible to make because Grant Alpaugh would start an edit war any time someone changed his precious article. Now that he's been banned I think it's time we actually sit down and discuss some changes, not least of which is improving the schedule list and make it resemble those on other articles. Hi mate, I really like your proposal about integrating club season articles into the [Year-Year] in English Football templates. It puts it into line with the American sports and will also enable us to keep track of articles as they are created. I have today converted Template:2002–03 in English football into a navbox, removed the transfers over £10million section and added the parameter for football club seasons. Instead of leaving redlinks but allowing us to check progress, I have simply added wikilinks to current articles while inputting the other team names without a link. Hey JohnnyPolo24, great, great season articles. I wanted to tell about the correction in the lead paragraphs for the 2008 and 2009 Pitt football seasons in case there is any confusion on the starting year. As you are probably aware the first official season of Pitt football was in 1890. This is how it is listed in all university publications, media guides, and releases, as well as in third party publications like College Football Data Warehouse. Starting from the 1890 season, unless I'm counting wrong, we are now in the 120th season. As you may be aware there was one game played in 1889 by a group of freshman students in what is said to be an unofficial game, resulting in a loss, against Shadyside Academy. It might be assumed that the university is conveniently forgetting that season because it resulted in only a loss. However, it does seem to be true that this 1889 group, many who went on to play for the 1890 team, was not an official team of the university. According to the Courant (the forerunner of The Pitt News), there was no football in 1889 [1]. The first mention of "foot ball", existing as a component of the university's Athletic Committee, was in 1890. [2] [3] [4] Based on the contemporary accounts of the Courant, it does seem that the first year of official football sponsored by the Athletic Committee was 1890, which is consistent with the media guides going back at least to 1950 (the earliest available on-line). Actually, they've scanned in all the old yearbooks through 1980 and made them available online. A large portion of the vintage images that I've uploaded come from them, as well as some of the information in the main Pitt and Pitt Panthers football articles, as well as others such as the Hail to Pitt article. I think it makes sense to have them in both or only have them in one. Jackie Sherrill could be in both as well then, as would Foge Fazio, Paul Hackett, and Sal Sunseri. A third party source quoting self-published content does not make the content any less self-published. The quote from the LA Times is not "Cohen received death threats," it's "Cohen says he received death threats." "The LA Times says Cohen says he got death threats" is just as self-published as "Cohen says he got death threats."

Per WP:SELFPUB, lists five criteria in which self-published information about oneself can be used:

  1. the material is not unduly self-serving;
  2. it does not involve claims about third parties;
  3. it does not involve claims about events not directly related to the subject;
  4. there is no reasonable doubt as to its authenticity;
  5. the article is not based primarily on such sources.

Hi mate, I saw your message on the season article taskforce about the lack of articles for the 2002-03 season in England and wanted to let you know that I am willing to help. We need to sort out a plan of action. My idea was that between us (and any other willing participants) we fill in the gaps for the 2002-03 (as a starter) by creating basic stub articles for each team with infobox, lead and a few references, along with templates and cats. I wasn't saying specifically that I want that year to be improved. My comment was more about the lack of club season articles from even earlier this decade. I recently updated {{ 1966–67 in English football}}, and there are only four club season articles for that season. There are literally thousands of club season articles that need to be created, dating back to the 19th century, and there are also a lot of league-specific season articles that need to be created as well, so there is practically an endless stream of articles that need to be written. I've been working more on the organizational end of things, creating the necessary categories and seasonal nav templates. However, the suggestions that you made to include into a "starter" article are very good. They may be stubs, but with the infobox, categories, sources, and a decent lead paragraph, they'll each be high-quality stubs, which is far more useful. I'm not sure Template:Southampton F.C. seasons is particularly useful as a navigation aid, containing just one blue link plus the header link and over 100 red links. WP:NAVBOX says "Red links should be avoided unless they are very likely to be developed into articles, and even if they do, editors are encouraged to write the article first." I agree that it is quite likely that these articles will be created at some point, but navboxes should be used to link existing articles, not to predict creation of future articles. I noticed your recent change at 2010–11 Cardiff City F.C. season, replacing Welsh with English on the basis that Cardiff are members of the FA. Personally it doesn't bother me that much which category it's in but I thought it best that you know that Cardiff are actually not governed by the FA but by the Football Association of Wales. Cheers. Thanks for your pleasant reply, but as you know, Cardiff play in the English football league system and compete in the FA Cup. They do not compete in any Football Association of Wales or Welsh football league system competitions. Though that bit about being governed by the Welsh FA is not it Cardiff's article. I understand your reasons for marking the article for deletion however there is a strong chance that Zahavi will make his professional debut in the 10/11 season, so if it is deleted now, it will be recreated in a month or so. In addition, if he switches federations to the US (something that is noteworthy in the US soccer scene), he will probably play an important roll in their U20 World Cup effort over the next year.

On a larger level I don't really think the footy rules fully work, especially for US players. For example, the way I read the rules, and I could be wrong, it appears that college soccer players in the US are not noteworthy. Since college is a large part of the soccer system in the US, players that standout are noteworthy to the US soccer scene, but they would not be able to noted on Wikipedia. For comparison, college American Football players are allowed to have pages (for example - Garrett Gilbert).

Thanks for the courteous reply. The problem is that he simply doesn't meet notibility, and there is no guarantee that he will move up to Sporting's starting lineup, transfer his FIFA license to the USA, or play for the USA U-20s. We can't predict the future, no matter how likely it may seem. ( WP:CRYSTAL) I realize that he could even get capped in Sporting's first Europa league match later this month, but even if it takes him 5 years you can always get the article undeleted.

College football and soccer are similar in that they are college students of similar age playing NCAA-sanctioned sports, but the similarities end there. College football is a major spectator sport with vast amounts of media coverage. Conversely, the College Cup and especially the conference season receive little to no media coverage. Most college soccer players wouldn't pass WP:GNG because there isn't any information available about them other than on their school's athletic department's website. Thank you for explaining everything. As you know, I'm new to all this so I don't really have a full understanding. For example, I didn't know an article can be undeleted. Just wondering, is there a way to start an article on someone but not have it be public? Sort of a place holder with information. As an example, let's say there is a player who just got signed to his first pro contract but has yet to figure in any matches. Can one create an article with all the background information and then once he gets capped, make it public?

Concerning the college soccer discussions, I understand that the media information is very lacking when compared to college football, however most college papers do write at least a few articles a year on their soccer team(s) and for those who follow soccer in the states there is notability of the players. I think this is especially true for women's soccer. But now I'm rambling again.

No problem, I don't mind helping out. I'm not saying that a college soccer player isn't notable, but like any topic, notibility has to be proven; it seems to me that only the top few college players achieve that level of recognition. A great way to work on an article in advance would be to put it in your sandbox, which is explained in greater detail beginning at WP:User pages. It's as simple as creating a user subpage, possibly User:Mcheid/Sandbox. You can work on whatever you like in there, and if you want to move it into the main article space then you can just do a copy and paste from your sandbox to whatever the article would be titled. To me, that seems unnecessary for the box score. The box score contains information pertinent to the individual game: stadium, scores, attendance, referee, etc. Any other information should go as prose in the game summary. Since you are a member of the Wikipedia:WikiProject University of Pittsburgh, I'd like to invite you to the Teaching with Wikipedia Workshop that will take place at CMU on Aug 15 (this workshop is open to general public, and is a joint imitative of CMU and Pitt). There will be another workshop held at Pitt in the Fall as well. It will cover how to include Wikipedia in one's course ( WP:SUP) and also how to become a Wikipedia:Campus Ambassadors. Pennsylvania has currently only one ambassador (myself) and it would be great if we could recruit at least several more. Ambassadors help course instructors, showing them how Wikipedia works, and interact with students. Hello, just a question on the edit you made to Harvest Moon: The Tale of Two Towns. Why is there need for the spacing edits you made? (changing {{cite web|url=... to {{cite web |url=...}}, etc.) They contribute nothing that I see except that they add size to the article, and they don't actually do anything to the visible article. Same with the line spacing changes. If it doesn't actually positively change the article format, why is there need for it? Hi. You may be interested in participating in the African Destubathon which starts on October 15. Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! So it would be a good chance to win something for improving stubs on African sportspeople, including footballers, athletes, Olympians and Paralympians etc, particularly female ones, but also male. Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing a few expanded articles on African Paralympians, Olympians and committees etc, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section.
