Editing Aboriginal art articles query

Hi Hamiltonstone

My name is Richard Aldridge and I am new to Wiki. I have two main areas of expertise being aboriginal art and Oceanic art. I recently got a week suspension from Wiki I think for linking to my own website. The links were relevant but I think the main issue is a conflict of interest.

From what I can gather I should not link to my site but just suggest the edit and then someone else make the link? Is that correct?

Although my sites do have a commercial aspect most of my pages are well-researched information pages. I do not understand why my site cannot be linked to but my competitor's site can.

For example under the entry Australian Aboriginal artifacts "Aboriginal Weapons". www.mbantua.com.au. Retrieved 2018-04-01. is allowed to link but I was removed. I am not sure why or how the decision process works — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tribal junkie ( talkcontribs) 03:45, 27 December 2018 (UTC) reply

Hello Richard. Yes, i thought the editing account Tribal Junkie might be you. There's a few different issues involved here. You are correct, the first one is conflict of interest and yes, you shouldn't be editing in ways that insert your own website links into articles.
However, there are other issues too. The main one is to do with reliable sources. Wikipedia relies on reliable sources, and one of the questions is whether your website constitutes a reliable source. Reliable source policy is a bit complicated and depends on context, too. But the fact that you trade in the artworks, in my view, possibly undermines your perceived reliability, because you could be perceived not to have a neutral view of your subject. There are other issues around reliability - you better have a read of the policy, and ask any questions you may have, on the talk page there.
You ask about the Mbantua link, and you say "I do not understand why my site cannot be linked to but my competitor's site can". It may well be that other links on the site are not reliable sources, or may have a conflict of interest, or may be what we call linkspam - people adding links, often under the guise of some legitimate reason, but which link to websites that sell stuff. I have spent a bit of time over the years trying to get rid of these links, especially in Aboriginal art articles. But in simple terms, two wrongs don't make a right - i don't know whether the Mbantua article meets WP:RS etc, but that doesn't make your site links okay. You are certainly welcome to question the Mbantua link on the article talk page, and someone may take a look at it there.
Sorry if that's all a bit convoluted. My last bit of advice would be: instead of linking your website, why not link published articles about the artists, or other published sources, that you, as an experienced person in the field, are familiar with? Then there won't be any issues.
Thanks for stopping by. hamiltonstone ( talk) 10:36, 27 December 2018 (UTC) reply

Overlinking

Hi, love the articles on female Australian Indigenous artists. Please note that well-known country-names such as "Australia/n", and common words such as "artist", are not normally linked. Cheers. Tony (talk) 04:37, 5 January 2019 (UTC) reply

Corpname

Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "Hamiltonstone", may not meet Wikipedia's username policy because WP:CORPNAME. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. As an alternative, you may ask for a change of username by completing the form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest, or you may simply create a new account for editing. Thank you.

Hamilton Stone is a business. Your username unambiguously represents the name of a business. That simple. Did you really need that explained to you. duffbeerforme ( talk) 05:10, 1 June 2019 (UTC) reply
I don't see the need to be snippy. I found it pretty odd being given a warning message that begins 'welcome to wikipedia' when I have been editing for around 13 years (though I am fairly inactive these days). I'm not sure why you think that just one of the several (small and insignificant) businesses / organisations (including my own) that use the words 'hamilton' and 'stone' has somehow had its interests advanced by my editing. Personally, I would have Considered leaving well enough alone. If you really think it necessary to take this any further, maybe raise it at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/User names. Thanks. hamiltonstone ( talk) 11:56, 1 June 2019 (UTC) reply

Hello, Hamiltonstone. Concerns have been raised that your username may be incompatible with policy. You can contribute to the discussion about it at the page for requests for comment on usernames. Alternatively, if you agree that your username may be problematic and are willing to change it, it is possible for you to keep your present contributions history under a new name. Simply request a new name at Wikipedia:Changing username following the guidelines on that page, rather than creating a whole new account. Thank you. duffbeerforme ( talk) 13:20, 3 June 2019 (UTC) duffbeerforme ( talk) 13:20, 3 June 2019 (UTC) reply

Access to Hilda Rix Nicholas resources

Hello Hamiltonstone,

Firstly, congratulations for this beautiful article : Hilda Rix Nicholas. I have translated it into French, all credits will be given.

I want to give a little more information about some of her main works (see this section of the article (in French) and the to-do list, where I try to get external links to these works). I'm having a hard time locating the works (which museum/private coll., ideally with a visual).

So this is where I need you: do you still have access to Pigot's or one of the sources you used to redact the article? Is there a catalogue raisonné where the location of these works are indicated?

Thank you, -- Daehan ( talk) 16:42, 17 March 2020 (UTC) reply
