I've removed the "gov" copyright tags from the Fidler image as it is not the work of the federal government. Please be more careful taking images from state and city government websites, as they are not public domain the way works of the federal government are. And it seems to have happened several times. Please take some time to review Wikipedia:Image use policy before uploading any more images. Ford MF 07:16, 17 May 2007 (UTC) reply

Image tagging for Image:NYCCouncilYassky.jpg and Image:NYCSantationLogo.gif

Hi, Guyver8400.

On both of the images Image:NYCCouncilYassky.jpg and Image:NYCSantationLogo.gif, you've added a template that they're works of the United States govenment, which, if correct, would make them public domain works.

However, for "who created this image" you have "the New York City Council" and "the New York City Department of Sanitation".

The New York City Council and the New York City Department of Sanitation are each part of the city of New York, which is a political subdivision of the State of New York. Both of these are part of the New York state government, not the United States government. If the attribution is correct, they are not works of the United States government and not necessarily copyright-free (although there may be another fair use basis to post them). Works of individual states, unlike works of the United States itself, are subject to copyright.

Terry Carroll 20:56, 15 May 2007 (UTC) reply

No response from Guyver8400, so I removed the erroneous PD-USGov template on both images myself.

Terry Carroll 01:32, 25 May 2007 (UTC) reply

The images are not made by the US Government, so they should have been removed instantly. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 05:59, 25 May 2007 (UTC) reply
Well, not necessarily. I don't know New York's position on claiming copyright; and even if it does claim copyright, the use here is arguably a fair one. So I'm not removing the images (I'm not sure how to do that anyway, to tell you the truth). But the claims that they are works of the US Government is wrong, wrong, wrongity-wrong, so I had no qualms about deleting those claims. Terry Carroll 22:46, 25 May 2007 (UTC) reply
Ok, then Terry, what needs to be done is you place {{subst:nld}} on the image pages and if the license is not changed in a week, the images will be deleted. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 23:03, 25 May 2007 (UTC) reply
Thought I should chime in here. I would think the sanitation logo is fair use. The Yasser photo is a model shot that he releases.-- Guyver8400 23:45, 25 May 2007 (UTC) reply

NYC Deparftment of Education

Why did you add the regions 1-4 to the New York City Department of Education, it just looks bad. :)

  • All ten of the region articles are up for deletion at [ [1]], and prospects didn't look good for surviving when I checked in on the subject. By putting the content on the DoE page, at least the content would survive somewhere. You may want to check out this AfD and express your opinion on the matter. Well, that was a bit of adventure. I've never before had to learn how Wikipedia deals with persistently nasty fools. As it turned out, both our block requests were initially turned down, but together they attracted the attention of another admin who stepped in and took the right actions. Then the previously anonymous vandal started using his old accounts to get around the blocks, and going after other pages, and of course those attempts too were foiled. Fortunately he shows no sign of subtlety or creativity, so we can be confident there are watching robots in place that will detect any trick he can think up in the next week or two.

Lesson learned? As vandals go, this attack was apparently not intensive enough to rate attention, so my official request was a bit off the mark. This somewhat surprizes me. What really attracts the attention of our Wiki cops is defamation of a living person. So, next time, if there is a next time, I'll be alert to that. Have fun with your peaceful editing! Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading Image:MillBasinBridge.jpg. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Jusjih 04:28, 10 November 2007 (UTC) reply

Fair use rationale for Image:NYCCouncilYassky.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:NYCCouncilYassky.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the " my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Jusjih ( talk) 03:15, 17 December 2007 (UTC) reply

File source problem with File:Gerritsen Beach Aerial View.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Gerritsen Beach Aerial View.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged per Wikipedia's criteria for speedy deletion, F4. If the image is copyrighted and non-free, the image will be deleted 48 hours after 09:40, 6 May 2010 (UTC) per speedy deletion criterion F7. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG ( talk) 09:40, 6 May 2010 (UTC) reply

File:Gerritsen Ave 021.jpg needs authorship information

Dear uploader:

The media file you uploaded as File:Gerritsen Ave 021.jpg appears to be missing information as to its authorship (and or source), or if you did provide such information, it is confusing for others trying to make use of the image.

It would be appreciated if you would consider updating the file description page, to make the authorship of the media clearer.

Although some images may not need author information in obvious cases, (such where an applicable source is provided), authorship information aids users of the image, and helps ensure that appropriate credit is given (a requirement of some licenses).

  • If you created this media yourself, please consider explicitly including your user name, for which: {{ subst:usernameexpand|Guyver8400}} will produce an appropriate expansion,
or use the {{ own}} template.
  • If this is an old image, for which the authorship is unknown or impossible to determine, please indicate this on the file description page.
If you have any questions please see Help:File page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG ( talk) 13:16, 29 December 2011 (UTC) reply
