I'm working on a study of political motivations and how they affect editing. I'd like to ask you to take a survey. The survey should take 5 minutes. Your survey responses will be kept private. Our project is documented at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Wikipedia_%2B_Politics.

Hello, Gfox88. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. In the future, when I revert your change of "Utilize" to " use", it would be preferable if you do not revert again. Instead, use the article's talk page to explain why "Utilize" is incorrect in the context of the sentence in which it is used, and we can discuss it in detail there. Also, please note that
Wikipedia:Basic copyediting is not part of the
Wikipedia:Manual of Style (MOS). As stated in the box at the top of the "Basic copyediting" page: "This help page is a how-to guide. It details processes or procedures of some aspect(s) of Wikipedia's norms and practices. It is not one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community."

BilCat, I don't understand you're preference for this vocabulary. You have not provided any reasons why it is preferable, only stating that in is valid or acceptable. Also, I don't understand your disdain for the Basic Copyediting page. When you raised the issue there, the two other people who also contributed did not agree with you. Of course it's not law, but it is linked to from the Manual of Style, and it reflects the consensus of the few people who care enough about these things to edit it. I think that is a better forum for this argument than every page that I edit and you revert.
I would ask you to also follow your own advice and also not revert my edits without raising it on the talk page. Thank you. Gfox88 ( talk) 20:40, 9 May 2020 (UTC)
- In case you missed it, Jonesey95 has updated the Copyediting guide
here. It now reads
and (in almost all cases) "utilize" for "use".
So there is no consensus that "Utilize" should never be used. As to why it is correct in this instance, I'm reluctant to explain, because I'm genuinely not sure you'd understand my explanation. Stop your war against the use of "crewed" please. Crewed is preferred. This example is explicitly listed in the Manual of style. If you think that's wrong start a proposal to change the Manual of Style, but don't change "crewed" to "manned" in tons of article while hiding your edit reason with some other irrelevant changes. -- mfb ( talk) 02:50, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
- My bad. I have a browser extension that changes it because it personally annoys me, but I don't intend to change it in the edits.
