US

Hey there, and thanks for your edits! In a recent edit to Toby Keith, you've changed "US" to "U.S." for orthography. That is not always correct, see MOS:US. Though it was correct in this case, as the article uses U.S. elsewhere, US should be preferred unless the article already uses U.S. most of the time. Happy editing! @ Aaron Liu: "US" is always wrong when it is supposed to be an abbreviation for "United States", regardless of what the semi-literates have written in the Wikipedia MOS. "US" will be read as the word "us" by text-to-speech generators. A similar error we frequently find in articles is "AM" and "PM" instead of "a.m." and "p.m.", respectively, the former interpreted as the word "am" by text-to-speech generators and "PM" as an unpronouceable non-word. —  Foxtrot1296 (talk) 17:16, 19 February 2024 (UTC) reply
You are on Wikipedia, and we've agreed that, as a matter of orthography, discarding dots from abbreviation looks better. If your text-to-speech engine is reading "US" as "us", then you simply aren't using a good text-to-speech engine. The good ones I've used, such as Google Translate, pronounce it correctly as U S. Quite a bit of profession style guides such as The Chicago Manual of Style agree with us.
If you really want to propose to discard this part of our MOS, you could start a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Abbreviations. If your talks don't get replied to much, you could also draft your proposal at WP:VPI or, if you're ambitious, formally propose your proposal at WP:VPR.
Also, be careful when calling other editors semi-literates! For reasons you may be able to figure out, Wikipedia has banned personal attacks, and some may interpret that as one. Aaron Liu ( talk) 17:35, 19 February 2024 (UTC) reply
