Featured article project

I would like to nominate Asian arowana for featured article status some time in the near future. I am writing to ask for your help in improving the article in any possible way in preparation for nomination. Thanks! -- Ginkgo100 talk · contribs 16:59, 29 June 2006 (UTC) reply

I would be more than glad to help you but I am not very familiar with the Asian arowana species. I am much more knowledgable about the South American genus Osteoglossum. I would probably not be much help as far as providing any information beyond the divergence or comparison of the two related genuses. -- Excaliburhorn

Authorities

Your edit to Roeboides was incorrect. Parentheses around an authority indicate that the species is placed in a different genus to that which the namer assigned it; the lack of parentheses indicates that the genus is unchanged. For example, we write Roeboides microlepis (Reinhardt, 1851) because Reinhardt originally placed the species in the genus Epicyrtus; whereas there should be no parentheses in Roeboides dispar Lucena, 2001. Kudos and Something To Do

Those are some nice images you've uploaded :) also, your changes to Rambling Wreck are wonderful! :) The only problem with that article is that there aren't any references. What I really wanted to mention is that since you've got the most experience with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets article, I'd like you to (eventually, no rush) (re)move most of the Athletics section in Georgia Institute of Technology as that section is just as long as the subpage. Examples of what I'm talking about can be found at Duke University#Athletics and Cornell University#Athletics (both are featured articles). The template on Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets is kind of odd. I've been trying to make a template with optional parameters in order to fix it, but when you omit a parameter, it inserts <p></p> into the html at that point, leaving a chunk of empty space. It's better than what we've got now, but I'd rather have something "perfect." See what I'm talking about in action at User:Disavian/Sandbox/Georgia Tech/Complex Transclusion Test2. — Disavian ( talk/ contribs) 17:28, 6 December 2006 (UTC) reply

A.J. Suggs

Hi there,

I just listed A.J. Suggs for Speedy deletion. I did so because he does not pass Wikipedia's policy on notability. I suggest you read the policy before taking further action towards article creation of quarterback's that did not play at the "highest level" like Suggs. Feel free to leave me a message at my user page.-- Thomas.macmillan 05:49, 26 February 2007 (UTC) reply

  • It wasn't actually nominated for AfD, but it is now. Now you have your chance to defend a player that lacks notability.-- Thomas.macmillan 18:58, 26 February 2007 (UTC) reply
  • I think you forget that Jordan Palmer is extremely likely to be drafted and play in the highest professional league, while A.J. Suggs couldn't even earn a long term starting job in college. Palmer was a 4 year starter with UTEP and, not to mention, is the 2nd outstanding Palmer (aka Carson). Simply put on Suggs AfD, I do not believe that every college football player deserves an article on Wikipedia.-- Thomas.macmillan 22:33, 26 February 2007 (UTC) reply
  • It is not so much that I care more about the pro-game, I am just concerned that the way some people believe that any college starter on a major team deserves a wiki-bio. He played against those notable quarterbacks, but that in and of itself does not make him notable. He was an average player, I know (and I am sure you do as well), I watched him on TV. Do you really believe that playing against notable people gives you notability? BTW, I fought to include Greg Olsen from Miami, Jamaal Anderson from Arkansas and many other notable college players, so I hope you do not think I am against college football. Any player that has a chance or has reached the highest level of the sport should have an article, its just that being a back-up quarterback to another average quarterback (Reggie Ball) really should not pass notability rules.-- Thomas.macmillan 23:03, 26 February 2007 (UTC) reply

The thing is Shawn Jones only saw action in one professional game so I just used this college template I found on some other guy's wikibio. His collegiate achievements are more important than his sole professional appearance. I've gotta get some sleep. I'll get some 'Nique sources tomorrow with more info. me 02:54, 12-Apr-2007 (UTC)
I agree that the college infobox is appropriate there. I was just saying that we should make a template that encapsulates it into something like {{ Infobox Georgia Tech player}}. Ramblins Discrepancies

I recently found some discrepancies between the Ramblins articles by Pat Edwards and other websites so I double checked with some GT Historians. One, in particular, was pretty familiar with Edwards and said that some of his information was poorly researched and that dates and other facts may be incorrect in his articles.

Alumni Association Homecoming - This site says homecoming started in 1920.
Ramblins: Anak -This Pat Edwards article says:
'Georgia Tech's first homecoming celebration was organized and sponsored by ANAK in 1916. It was at this time that Tech's proud tradition of combining the alumni reunions with Homecoming was established. This tradition, once unusual among colleges, continues to this day.'

—Preceding unsigned comment added by Excaliburhorn ( talkcontribs) 16:05, 21 May 2007

Fascinating. I don't really trust anything that mentions ANAK anyway. At least Edwards wrote something, though; his articles cover a pretty broad range of topics related to Tech, so they've been reasonably useful. I don't know any GT Historians... mind hooking me up and/or having them look at History of Georgia Tech? It's the next article I want to nominate for FA status. — Disavian ( talk/ contribs) 20:13, 21 May 2007 (UTC) reply

Also, is there a good source for historical GT sports records? In particular, I'd like to find specific scores/opponents (similar to the information on 2006-07 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets men's basketball team) from the early days of Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets men's basketball so that I can fill in that History section a little better. — Disavian ( talk/ contribs) 20:38, 21 May 2007 (UTC) reply

martlets

In martlet, I changed the caption "The family crest of Bird" to "Coat of arms of a family named Bird"; though the image is not on a shield, the rectangle suggests a flag and these two forms are normally interchangeable. Is it in fact a crest, i.e. a symbol worn atop a helmet rather than on a shield? — Tamfang 19:29, 8 April 2007 (UTC) reply

License tagging for Image:Caldwellhallgeorgiatech.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Caldwellhallgeorgiatech.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

Hey ... I was looking around at some of the Georgia Tech stuff when I noticed Image:Eddiemcashan.jpg. You may not be aware of it (or may not have been aware of it when you uploaded the image almost a year ago), but scanning or photocopying an image is not considered a "creative work" and thus the copyright for this photo is not owned by the person who scanned it from a book, but is owned by the original photographer. The original photographer or publication, not the scanner, needs to release rights to it for us to use it. -- B 23:10, 2 October 2007 (UTC) reply

Potential Featured Topic

Just wanted to let you know of a potential featured topic that is (kinda) related to Georgia Tech football. I've been working on articles about the ACC Championship game, and I've created yearly articles for each: 2005 ACC Championship Game, 2006 ACC Championship Game, 2007 ACC Championship Game, and 2008 ACC Championship Game. The 2007 article is already featured, and the 2005 article is undergoing a GA review right now.

If you're able to help out, all that needs to be done is to bring the 2006 article and the ACC Championship Game article to good/featured status. Since you seem to be one of the leaders of the Georgia Tech contingent around here, I figured I'd ask you for help, since the 2006 article needs the most help, and I don't think I could do it justice. I'll be polishing off the 2005 article within the next week or so, and then concentrating on the keystone article.

I'm just asking for a little help with the 2006 article, if possible. I've got the format figured out, but it needs someone to fill in the blanks. Once that's done and the article's at good status, we'll have the first featured topic associated with American football on Wikipedia. Do you think you could lend a hand? I added a section stub for "Housing" in the main GT article: Georgia Institute of Technology#Housing. Would you know off the top of your head something to write in there or any sources that would be most useful for a general overview of housing? Hi. Could you please clarify the information at File:1979wreckfb.jpg? Your upload description said "John Bird, self-made, 1979", where as the caption on the Wikipedia article says "Image of the Wreck in 1979 Blueprint". Ramblin' Reck Paint Codes

I’m looking for the paint codes for the old gold and the white color used on the Ramblin’ Reck to paint my classic car and was wondering if you could help. I saw were PPG stated that the old gold is 1974 Lincoln 6L, which on the paint chip page is PPG 2497/ Medium Gold Poly. Is this correct? I have been told that the white is Wimbledon white/PPG 8378, which looks like a cream colored off white. There is also a White Décor/PPG 2512 on the 1974 Lincoln paint chip page, which is a little brighter.

Any help would be greatly appericated.

Gatechme ( talk) 02:27, 9 September 2009 (UTC) reply

What I generally give people is this color "6L Gold Poly #24450" so that the paint places have a more modern paint code. I believe we currently have a custom mixture on the car that isn't quite the '74 Lincoln Gold. Let me know if that helps.-- Excaliburhorn ( talk) 13:15, 10 September 2009 (UTC) reply

That is a great help. Do you know what shade of white the running boards and fenders are painted?

Thanks,

Gatechme ( talk) 21:02, 11 September 2009 (UTC) reply

We use a basic white. I'm not sure of the color code. It's just plain white. There's no special egg-shell or pearl or anything like that. It may appear faded in older pictures but we repainted it pure white.-- Excaliburhorn ( talk) 14:13, 18 September 2009 (UTC) reply

Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Excaliburhorn! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 2 of the articles that you created are tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 951 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{ unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

  1. Jonathan Smith (American football) - Find sources:  Google ( books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL
  2. Tom Luginbill - Find sources:  Google ( books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL

Reviewer rights

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Karanacs ( talk) 16:06, 15 June 2010 (UTC) reply

You image is completely different from mine. I do not know how to delete it. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Flakeboard America Limited requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Thanks for uploading File:Image-GlennHallGoatman.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{ non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included.
