Hello Edwardx

I've filled in a gap with Draft:St Matthew's Church, Fulham and wondered if you might be able to help. I used to be part of this church more than 25 years ago and still have some contacts, who I'm pursuing to get the other gaps filled in for this page, but I now live far away, and don't know anyone who could take some good photos for commons or wikipedia use. Don't suppose you live close enough to take a few decent pictures of St Matthews for me? Very long shot I realise. Many thanks Stevet-l ( talk) 15:25, 25 November 2016 (UTC)

All Saints is my local church, but I've just found two photos of St Matthew's that I took last year, created a Commons category and uploaded them. Not great, but a lot better than nothing. Hi Edward. Thanks for creating Category:Colvin family. I've been interested in them for years, and created Colvin family in 2011. Have you seen its talk page? I've collated a lot of rough notes there, to inspire anyone who chooses to follow up. At the time this family was beginning its eminence, spellings still fluctuated between Colville and Colvin, so it's tricky. But anyway, thanks for your interest. Thanks, Carbon Caryatid. I only stumbled across the Colvins by chance, when starting Hal Moggridge‎. That indented list of descendants is a helpful way of showing connections, and there is something similar at Cargill family. I've been starting quite a few of these family categories in recent times, and they are a useful tool to see how things connects. Most recently, Category:Salmon family and Category:Gluckstein family, both of which came out of starting Joseph Lyons (caterer). Yes, Brenda Colvin is one of mine, too; I never really bothered to catalogue my creations, simply doing whatever was of interest at the time. With families, though, how does one know where to stop? The women almost always changed their names on marriage, so do nieces and nephews and grandchildren not of that surname count as part of the family? (By the way, I often link to Name_change#Historical_usage, which might be of use in your family editing.) I love drawing these links. The Salmon family immediately has me thinking of Nigella Lawson and, less directly Tate sugar, Mr Tate, Tate original, Tate Modern, and the other modern art collector, aka Mr Nigella. @ Jennica: "Notability issues" is a rather vague reason for a PROD. What about WP:BEFORE? As well as the Guardian obit cited, a quick search for "Janet Turner lighting" shows up an AJ obit, and others. By way of penance, how about expanding the article instead! Well I sure didn't propose it to get into an argument or make anybody mad. I've seen the notability reason on several PRODs. Musical recordings is not an area that I work in, but based on the number of reviews, it looks like it meets criterion 1 of WP:NALBUM. No Swan So Fine has done plenty of jazz album articles, so perhaps they would know. Edwardx ( talk) 15:08, 20 December 2016 (UTC)

Drive-by comments at DYK like this aren't constructive. I'm interested in getting that hook promoted. (It was already reviewed and approved.) The hook is within length requirements, so it doesn't need to be trimmed. While you may believe it improves the hook your comment will only distract from the process. Please accept my apologies for any upset. My intent is always to improve hooks, and Wikipedia more generally. Hooks can be altered at any point in the process, even when they are live on the main page. I don't see how my comment can reasonably be said to "distract from the process". Surely if we have concerns with hooks it is best to raise them at the earliest opportunity; and just because the hook was deemed acceptable, it doesn't mean it was optimal. While I agree about collaboration, I have found that DYK runs fastest when the comments end with the green check mark. Any comments that don't end with a green check mark not only delay the hook being added to the queue, they scare off other editors looking for a QPQ. I get rankled with this behavior because drive-by editors, meaning well, end up making a larger problem. I wrote the hook as I did because Shoop retired decades later. By removing that portion of the sentence you create confusion. I don't see optimization in this case. If your concerns were about accuracy or length I would agree. Your suggestion merely chops off a few words in the belief that your solution was "optimal". You can ask other editors more-experienced than I at DYK, but I really don't see any value added in what you're doing. Chris Troutman ( talk) 03:17, 4 January 2017 (UTC)

I think that I have been polite and reasonable, but I take issue with the repeated imputation that I'm some sort of "drive-by editor". As a very experienced editor, please avoid ad hominem comments and WP:OWNERSHIP, and focus on the validity or otherwise of the argument. There is rarely any rush to get a DYK hook through, and the subject of this hook has been dead nearly 50 years. You state that, "If your concerns were about accuracy or length I would agree". If you look again at my comment, I stated that a five word phrase "could easily be trimmed". Therefore we are in agreement. Edwardx ( talk) 11:30, 4 January 2017 (UTC)
