Hi there! Just letting you know (if you didn't know already) of a few research-based pages on Wikipedia. There's a project called Wikidemia, which is to bring together studies on Wikipedia, and how to possibly coordinate. Then there's Wikicensus which is to bring together actual surveys done in Wikipedia. Then, of course, there is Research on Meta. I am currently studying the Wikipedia community, as are a few others, and would be willing to help in directing you to relevant places if necessary, though I'm not sure about participating in your study myself. You may find that you don't get a huge response from the Village Pump (as it is so big and cluttered), though it is good to have announced your project and its purpose there and on your user page. You may have better luck in contacting people directly, possibly through the Most_active_wikipedians page or by announcing on the English Wikipedia mailing list (there are other more specific mailing lists as well). - Thanks for the input! We actually did contact folks via talk pages for the study we did last year and had a lot more luck with the Village Pump than individual contacts. In case you don't remember, you asked how I found some vandalism. I haven't done it for a while, but I remember I found vandalism through two chief ways.
Check out Wikipedia:Vandalism in progress. Besides giving some good links to other helpful information on how to go about looking for vandals, it gives a listing of a lot of recent vandalism activity. One day, when I was bored, I just started going through the contribution history of known vandals listed there (randomly picking from the more recently listed ones), looking for recent edits—and fixing things when I came across them.
The other way I found some vandalism was by visiting Special:Recentchanges. One of my primary activities here was to add stub tags, wikify, and clean up grammar on new articles (sometimes easily noticed by their small size), but I also kept my eye open for vandalism, too.

Hi Andicat -- sorry I didn't get hold of you in time. I just hardly ever check in anymore. This is especially true after I actually met one of the scholars used against some of my arguments and he confirmed that I understood him correctly and the person claiming to understand him didn't! JHK

I just read your article; it's pretty interesting and concides with some of my own research. How's the progress on 'Science Online'? Have you read Wikis in teaching and assessment: the M/Cyclopedia project? [1]] They in effect created something aking to your science online idea, yet I'd argue that such approach is not optimal. There is no need to create a different wiki for students; they should contribute to Wikipedia. It will make their work more useful, prevent duplication, allow them to interact with more experienced editors, familiarize them with pros and cons of Wikipedia and it has other advantages (perhaps I should put a draft of my article about the advantages of teaching with Wikipedia online).-- Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus | talk 21:58, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
- For some reason I didn't notice your reply till today :( You raise good points; certainly some activities are not good for wiki - but others are (the higher you go on the education ladder, the more, I think). Still, some may be - if you licence your SOwiki under GFDL than editors (including students themselves!) could transfer some facts without much problem. If you send me an @ at piokon at post dot pl I'll be happy to send you the draft of my paper; it disucsses my ideas for activities in academia. So as to prevent the hard work of the many Wikimedians involved in the Atlanta bid from going to waste, we have decided to host a conference for the Americas. Image:CheetahWithCub.jpg is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:Image:Cheetah with cub.jpg. Commons is a repository of free media that can be used on all MediaWiki wiki's. The image(s) will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[Image:Cheetah with cub.jpg]].
