Women in Red

Hi there, AMM Pittsburgh, and welcome to Women in Red. I see you are interested in expanding stubs but it would be great if you could also create new articles about women from France. You might find someone of interest on this redlink list. If you decide to create new articles, you might find it useful to read through our Ten Simple Rules. Please let me know if you run into any difficulties or need assistance. Happy editing!-- Ipigott ( talk) 09:11, 23 November 2019 (UTC) reply

With your encouragement, I created my first page about a Woman in Red: Maria Petyt. It was fun to research and I've submitted it for publication. Do I need to do anything more? Also, there is a page on Wikipedia in French but I don't know how to list that link under the Languages heading but I'm sure to figure that out. Thanks again for your message! I have sent you a note about a page you started

Hello, AMM Pittsburgh

Thank you for creating Emilia Errera.

User:Blythwood, while examining this page as a part of our page curation process, had the following comments:

Really interesting article to read! As I started to dig into verifying it I found a lot of interesting sources to add (e.g. on her Jewish family background). I was a bit startled that the article didn't cover this anywhere (or even mention that she was Jewish) so I've added a lot of extra sources (some of which I can't read as I can't speak Italian, but hopefuly it will alert people who can to what's out there!). It's a shame her book has never been translated into English or digitised. I think this article would make a great do you know feature for the main page.

To reply, leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|Blythwood}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ .

Blythwood ( talk) 23:15, 23 March 2020 (UTC) reply

@ Blythwood: Hello Blythwood,
Thanks for your comments and encouragement. And thanks for improving both Errera articles. Well done. I only just realized about the Jewish connection when I was finishing up the second article, about Rosa.
Please know that I am a new Wiki editor. And although I know the writing business well, I have few skills in hypertext markup language, which I think best describes "source code." So the coding behind templates mystifies me. As an enthusiastic writer, I'm very disappointed that Wiki doesn't make it easier for ordinary writers, those without a documentation background, navigate source code. I wish that were not so.
That said, I thank you for your work on these two pieces and I look forward to any other comments you may have.

AMM Pittsburgh, you've done a really good job with the formatting! It's a really well-laid-out article with all the intricacies that most new contributors find difficult like defaultsort, authcon, naming references and linking to Wikidata all present and correct. For adding extra sources the one thing you haven't used that I recommend is the Google Books citation generator which can quickly turn Google Books urls into citations. For some reason I don't understand it doesn't load on Safari but it works fine on other browsers. This is an article that could absolutely get to the front page if you want to nominate it for DYK (I'd be happy to do it for you if you prefer.) Blythwood ( talk) 18:27, 24 March 2020 (UTC) reply

A kitten for you!

Hi I’m just reviewing Hélène Terré and see you’ve created another great article, thank you. The article looks to me like it’s largely translated from fr.wiki. Is this correct? Thanks.

Mccapra ( talk) 15:51, 15 April 2020 (UTC) reply

@ Mccapra: Hello Mccapra,
Thanks. I did start by referencing the Frech Wiki and two translated paragraphs came roughly from there. But I was able to expand the French content considerably by finding and referencing several additional sources. I became intrigued with Hélène's life and accomplishments and really enjoyed researching her. Should I not start with the French translation?

AMM Pittsburgh ( talk) 17:06, 15 April 2020 (UTC) reply

Hi. Translating articles from other wikis is absolutely fine. I think most of my own articles are mainly translations. Like you I use the existing article as a base and expand it if I can find the sources. The thing is that if you use any substantial part of an article from another Wikipedia, you need to add the translation template to the article talk page. This preserves the chain of copyright and attribution that we have to maintain. I’m going to add the translation template to the article talk page myself now. Any time you translate in future, just copy it onto the talk yourself and change the details. Happy editing! Mccapra ( talk) 19:19, 15 April 2020 (UTC) reply

@ Rosiestep: Oh, Rosiestep. Thank you and WP:WPWW for this awesome award. I'm a relatively new editor, started November 2019, and am often daunted by the complexities of editing for Wikipedia but this award will help me in moments of doubt. I've enjoyed working with Women in Red and taking advantage of your many lists to find deserving women who need new pages. Keep up the great work, yourselves. Merge proposal

Hi I’ve just reviewed your new article Jamila al-'Alayili and I’ve realised that in fact there’s already an article about her under a variant spelling, Gamila El Alaily. I suggest the best way forward is for you to merge your content into the older article and then leave a redirect in the page you created as people may search under that spelling. All the best Mccapra ( talk) 13:56, 9 May 2020 (UTC) reply

@ Mccapra: Wow. Thanks so much. I will do exactly that. How does one find such spelling problems when the two names are so very different? How would one know that they are the same person? AMM Pittsburgh ( talk) 14:22, 9 May 2020 (UTC) reply
The transliteration of Arabic into English is notoriously difficult and not standard. Your rendering is ‘correct’ by most accepted scholarly standards, but there are all kinds of exceptions. The apostrophe before the main surname element denotes a guttural sound, and sometimes writers just leave it out. One of the distinctive marks of Egyptian dialect is that the J sound is pronounced G, so the spelling in the older article reflects what it sounds like in that respect. I found the other article because of your note saying that you hadn’t translated it from an Arabic article, so I immediately went and searched in Arabic to see if there was an ar.wiki article to connect it to. That led me on to the other en.wiki article. I think redirecting from your version is a good step because your spelling is ‘proper’ and people searching for info about her may well use it. Mccapra ( talk) 14:36, 9 May 2020 (UTC) reply
@Mccapra: That is very helpful, thanks. Also, BTW, I really appreciate your reviews of my past articles. AMM Pittsburgh ( talk) 15:05, 9 May 2020 (UTC) reply
@Mccapra: Ok, I did as you suggested and was able to make the original page much longer and better linked in the process. Let me know if there's more I can do. AMM Pittsburgh ( talk) 16:18, 9 May 2020 (UTC) reply

Hi me again, working my way through articles in the new pages review. Just a reminder that Wikipedia can’t ever be used as a source, so if you derive material from fr.wiki you have to check and copy the sources it uses, or just leave the statements without citations. All the best. Mccapra ( talk) 12:36, 13 May 2020 (UTC) reply

@Mccapra: Ok, thanks for catching that. I will fix it. AMM Pittsburgh ( talk) 14:24, 13 May 2020 (UTC) reply

Autopatrolled user rights

Hi. At the moment when you create an article it goes into the queue to be reviewed and doesn’t get indexed by search engines until a reviewer has checked it. If you become autopatrolled you don’t have to wait to be reviewed. To request this user right please see here. I see no major issues with the articles you’re creating and you’re probably ready to request this right. If you’d prefer to keep getting reviewer feedback that’s fine, just apply whenever you’re ready. As a word of advice the thing that lost me my autopatrolled status for a period was close paraphrasing of sources that meant I risked a copyright violation. If you can avoid they, you can pick up everything else as you go along. All the best, Mccapra ( talk) 16:36, 15 May 2020 (UTC) reply

@Mccapra: Hey there, thanks for the info. I will look into that, though I must say the reviews have helped me a lot. Still, it sounds like a good idea and I can always get somone else to review if I need that. Stay safe. AMM AMM Pittsburgh ( talk) 18:32, 15 May 2020 (UTC) reply

Autopatrolled granted

Hi AMM Pittsburgh, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the "autopatrolled" permission to your account, as you have created numerous, valid articles. This feature will have no effect on your editing, and is simply intended to reduce the workload on new page patrollers. For more information on the autopatrolled right, see Wikipedia:Autopatrolled. However, you should consider adding relevant wikiproject talk-page templates, stub-tags and categories to new articles that you create if you aren't already in the habit of doing so, since your articles will no longer be systematically checked by other editors ( User:Evad37/rater and User:SD0001/StubSorter.js are useful scripts which can help). Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! ~Swarm~ {sting} 19:27, 17 May 2020 (UTC) reply

Hello AMM Pittsburgh,

I'm French and I beg your pardon for my poor English. I saw, you contributed to the article Marianne-Agnès Falques. We have the same problem on WP:fr about the conflicts with her biography. But I just found a new source (sept. 2021) Julia Gasper, Anne-Marie Fauques de Vaucluse, a Tiger among the Bluestockings. Perhaps it would be easier to you to get a free access to this work. If you can improve english version, we could translate it in French. So, I give you this information. Good contributions. HB ( talk) 17:34, 20 October 2021 (UTC) reply

@ HB: Hello HB,
Thanks for your comments about Marianne-Agnès Falques. She is certainly an intriguing historical figure. I have discovered that the Gasper text is self-published through Lulu, and it looks interesting. I will pursue that avenue and let you know my progress. Thanks again for your encouragement.

Information icon Hi AMM Pittsburgh! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia – it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. Thank you. IMDB links

Hello AMM Pittsburgh!

I noticed your article Brigitte Senut. Arguably you should not use IMDB as a citation as it isn't a WP:RS (It could go into an external links section: see WP:IMDB/BLP). However by using imdbtitle you created another subtle problem. The reasons for not using that type of link are explained at WT:WikiProject_Film/Archive 79#Masking imdb links as wikilinks. There is a template {{ imdb title}} which can be used in the external links section of articles or in extremis as part of a reference. I've altered that ref today so you can see the difference. ( Rfl0216 may also be interested in this, as their conversion of the link to a reference retained the problem I'm referring to). Thanks. Mike Turnbull ( talk) 21:25, 11 May 2022 (UTC) reply

French women scientists

Hi there, AMM Pittsburgh, and thanks for all the articles on women scientists you have been translating from the French wiki. Why not mark them WIR-227 and list them on our translation contest page? That would make them more visible to other users and contribute to the overall success of our focus. In any case, you are doing a great job and we look forward to many more. In July 2015 around 15.5% of the English Wikipedia's biographies were about women. As of July 2023, 19.61% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women. BLP - Woman Real Estate CEO

Hi AMM Pittburgh, I created an article draft for MaryAnne Gilmartin, an NYC real estate developer and CEO. Based on your participation in WP:Women in Red and WP:BLP, I'm reaching out to you for your consideration in moving the draft to main space. Thank you very much! AK for MAG ( talk) 20:44, 19 April 2024 (UTC) reply

Thanks for contributing to Wiki and for sending your request. However, I do not have the authorization to move drafts (other than those I author) into the mail article space. I don't know what that process is so I cannot help you but I encourage you to keep added biographies of worthy women into Wikipedia. Best, AMM Pittsburgh ( talk) 17:17, 20 April 2024 (UTC) reply
Hi AMM Pittsburgh, thanks for your encouragement! From my understanding, any unbiased editor can move an article into main space - see WP:DRAFTMOVE. I am not doing so myself because I have a COI. If you agree that she is notable, I would appreciate your help in creating her article. If you're less comfortable with that process and prefer to use my draft as a starting point for your own article on the subject, that would be fine with me as well. Then I'd just delete this draft when you're done. Thank you! AK for MAG ( talk) 15:38, 22 April 2024 (UTC) reply
