Support request with team editing experiment project
Dear tech ambassadors, instead of spamming the Village Pump of each Wikipedia about my tiny project proposal for researching team editing (see here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Research_team_editing), I have decided to leave to your own discretion if the matter is relevant enough to inform a wider audience already. I would appreciate if you could appraise if the Wikipedia community you are more familiar with could have interest in testing group editing "on their own grounds" and with their own guidance. In a nutshell: it consists in editing pages as a group instead of as an individual. This social experiment might involve redefining some aspects of the workflow we are all used to, with the hope of creating a more friendly and collaborative environment since editing under a group umbrella creates less social exposure than traditional "individual editing". I send you this message also as a proof that the Inspire Campaign is already gearing up. As said I would appreciate of *you* just a comment on the talk page/endorsement of my
project noting your general perception about the idea. Nothing else. Your contribution helps to shape the future! (which I hope it will be very bright, with colors, and Wikipedia everywhere) Regards from
User:Micru on meta.
Hello, The Anome. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.
The
Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the
Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose
site bans,
topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The
arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
It occurred to me that there may be a number of pages already in existence, but since they are not formatted the same as what's on this page, they aren't being identified as being done. I'm trying to think on how to solve this problem. --

This is the last warning that by the end of May 2024 the Vector 2022 skin will no longer share site and user scripts/styles with old Vector. For user-scripts that you want to keep using on Vector 2022, copy the contents of
Special:MyPage/vector.js to
Special:MyPage/vector-2022.js. There are
more technical details available. Interface administrators who foresee this leading to lots of technical support questions may wish to send a mass message to your community, as was done on French Wikipedia.

Should Anomebot request geocoords for grade schools in the U. S.?
I'm rather new (I feel VERY newbie), so I hope this is the right place for this question. Actually, it's a request. If it doesn't already, can Anomebot be changed to forego requesting geographic coordinates for primary and secondary schools and school districts active in the United States? School shootings...
Better yet, can it be designed to also remove coordinates added to the articles for active primary and secondary schools and school districts here?
Oona Wikiwalker (
talk) 00:36, 24 April 2024 (UTC)reply
Hi Oona, and welcome to Wikipedia! I'm not quite sure what your threat model is here. The addresses of schools are public, and available on all major mapping services: Google Maps, Bing Maps, Apple Maps, OpenStreetMap, and more. Moreover, school districts have lists of schools in their area, and the addresses for those schools are public, and can in turn be looked up on maps. Removing locations from Wikipedia would have no effect on any of these. On the other hand, schools are public buildings and their location is a valid datum for any of a wide number of legitimate purposes, and therefore seems logical to have on Wikipedia similar to the locations of other public facilities, as is long-established practice.
However, I think your proposal deserves to be heard, and if you'd still like to propose a policy change, I think the correct forum for this would be the
Wikipedia:Village pump (policy) page, which would be a good place to post your request. —

The appearance of talk pages changed for the following wikis: Azerbaijani Wikipedia, Bengali Wikipedia, German Wikipedia, Persian Wikipedia, Hebrew Wikipedia, Hindi Wikipedia, Indonesian Wikipedia, Korean Wikipedia, Dutch Wikipedia, Portuguese Wikipedia, Romanian Wikipedia, Thai Wikipedia, Turkish Wikipedia, Ukrainian Wikipedia, Vietnamese Wikipedia. These wikis participated to a test, where 50% of users got the new design, for one year. As this test
gave positive results, the new design is deployed on these wikis as the default design. It is possible to opt-out these changes
in user preferences ("Show discussion activity"). The deployment will happen at all wikis in the coming weeks.

Kartographer maps can use an alternative visual style without labels, by using mapstyle="osm". This wasn't working in previews, creating the wrong impression that it wasn't supported. This has now been fixed.

I used to work for the cabinet secretary in my state who oversaw the department responsible for Native American heritage and they do not make knowledge of the sites public. Utility companies, road construction companies, etc., are told of locations near where they must work but they are not allowed to publicize the locations either. The concern is not just for human remains, but to prevent contributing to the clandestine traffic in Native American artifacts. Should we carry coordinates for these locations in Wikipedia? I've felt less and less comfortable about this as I've been editing...
Oona Wikiwalker (
talk) 05:44, 2 May 2024 (UTC)reply
If their coordinates are published in official sources, we should have them here unless there are exceptional reasons for us to suppress information that is publicly available elsewhere. If they are kept secret to avoid interference (as is the case for many other archeological sites) they also should not have coordinates here, and you are welcome to remove the {{coord missing}} tag. Can you give some examples of the articles in question? —
The Anome (
talk) 08:44, 2 May 2024 (UTC)reply
But would you please define official sources? In addition to tribal statements, do they include books and unpublished notes of anthropologists? Some early ones were sensitive and sympathetic, but others like
Alfred Kroeber are coming under criticism for their exploitation of native individuals (not mentioned in the article) and, while they were truthful, they may have been publishing information against the will of tribal members who were not yet able to protest effectively. Some tribes have federal recognition and reservation lands. Some do not. Either way, it's distressing to tribal members that they have no control over the ground their ancestors rest in or they do have control and trespassers violate their sovereignty.
Oona Wikiwalker (
talk) 06:32, 3 May 2024 (UTC)reply
Thanks! I will have to think about this some more, but in the two cases you have given where the coordinates are known to be unknown (that is to say, lost to time), you can tag them with the already existing tag {{coord unknown}}, and I have done so. It's possible we will need a new coord tag for cases where locations are known but not made public for good reasons, we may need a new tag, perhaps something like "coord restricted". This sounds like something worth discussing at
Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Geographical coordinates —

On Wikisource there is a special page listing pages of works without corresponding scan images. Now you can use the new magic word __EXPECTWITHOUTSCANS__ to exclude certain pages (list of editions or translations of works) from that list.

If you use the
user-preference "Show preview without reloading the page", then the template-page feature "Preview page with this template (
what's this?)" will now also work without reloading the page.

Kartographer maps can now specify an alternative text via the alt= attribute. This is identical in usage to the alt= attribute in the
image and gallery syntax. An exception for this feature is wikis like Wikivoyage where the miniature maps are interactive.

The old
Guided Tour for the "
New Filters for Edit Review" feature has been removed. It was created in 2017 to show people with older accounts how the interface had changed, and has now been seen by most of the intended people.

In the Vector 2022 skin, main pages will be displayed at full width (like special pages). The goal is to keep the number of characters per line large enough. This is related to the coming changes to typography in Vector 2022.

Two columns of the pagelinks database table (pl_namespace and pl_title) are being dropped soon. Users must use two columns of the new linktarget table instead (lt_namespace and lt_title). In your existing SQL queries:
Replace JOIN pagelinks with JOIN linktarget and pl_ with lt_ in the ON statement
Below that add JOIN pagelinks ON lt_id = pl_target_id
Hi there! Today, the user Pi.1415926535 marked a lot of articles with geotags on them as not needing the coordinates:
https://en.wikipedia.org/?title=Special:Contributions/Pi.1415926535&target=Pi.1415926535&offset=&limit=500
I am not complaining about what they did, but I suspect I've wasted months of time tracking down accurate coordinates for articles that didn't need them. So how do we make that call? I'm very confused and annoyed at the months of time I've wasted.
