If memory serves me correctly (at work now) that's how it was described in the source (London's local railways - A A Jackson) I was using. I have no doubt that this is a generalization and that Chingford would have had a number of other trades primarily support the local economy. In terms of the dominant group in numerical and economic terms I think that "businessmen" is probably the most likely. I am however open to correction!
