hello! thank you for your greeting, it was just what i was looking for! i actually created a new page, which is a candidate for speedy deletion. This is understandable i suppose based on the quality of the page. But the content is not something that deserves deletion. I have been trying to get help from more experienced users in editing the page, but not much has been done. I was hoping you may be able to help me by improvng the page up to wikipedia standards while i learn how to create quality pages. I fear that if no one helps soon, the page will be deleted. I have contested the speedy deletion, but it may not stand. Thank you once again for the greeting, and i hope you can find time for this!

Thank you for the links and advice! I have been browsing Wikipedia for several years now but I did not find very much really useful information here until recently. I now browse it almost every day and I joined the site on 20 May 2006.

I doubt very much that I will ever be adding a complete page all by myself as, although I am 65 years old and have a 140+ I.Q., my knowledge is very general, i.e., I know where to find the knowledge in either my 30 000+ reference book collection or on the Internet. I have rather poor memory-recollection capabilities, however, so I seldom try and memorize anything, I just look it up. I am an expert in absolutley nothing....

I have done some small edits to several of the pages over the past few months, mostly items such as correcting a very few typos I have found, correcting some links that led to Wikipedia redirect pages instead of to the correct page, and added a few new exterior links such as I did on the Ménière’s disease page tonight. I have suffered from this syndrome for several years now and had found a few more websites devoted to it that were not referenced on its Wikipedia page. Please have another look at my edits there (I have now finished) and correct any that you think I should not have made.

My most humble appologies if I made any boo-boos there tonight but I find the Wikipedia "Help" for new Users very confusing! And thank you for the links to those "Help" pages but I already have most of those already bookmarked, I just don't understand them...<sigh>...and I have been accessing bulletin board systems, online forums, and the Usenet, one way or another, since around 1987 but Wikipedia has got me beat trying to understand how to properly edit it.

If you would like to have something speedily deleted, simply mark it with {{db|(reason)}}. You don't have to take it to AFD like you did here. For more information, please see WP:SD or WP:CSD. Wikipedia is weird in that it acts like a user community -- except that suddenly out of the blue, you get messages from people making clear that there are overlords who are ostensibly "watching" pages being created and edited.

That's fine, I read all the "new user" guidelines and the relevant stuff about creating/editing pages without a point of view, bias, etc. That said, it's difficult to tell whether the messages one gets are from 1) overlords or 2) fellow Wikipedians [recognizing of course that overlords *are* also fellow Wikipedians] and whether one gets certain messages because one A) did something "wrong" -- and what that was, specifically, or B) it is simply a function of some computer-generated alert based on the number of times a page is edited, visited, complained about, etc.

There seems to be a certain cultural bias against specificity in many of such cases, which makes it hard for new users such as myself who are genuinely trying to comply with the "rules"/culture to know whether they are adhering to the rules/culture -- and if not, why not -- and whether any alleged "mistakes" in this regard are genuine mistakes or just someone else's bias causing them to impute bias to me.

Does that make sense?

I am editing a page about my school. There is some controversy with the neighborhood which has resulted in an opposing web site. Whoever it is found the wikipedia article and added it as an external link, which is fine and the nature of wikipedia.

I edited it and tried to give some context in the main and maintain NPOV as best I can.

Here's my problem - due to the nature of the ongoing controversy, I anticipate that this anonymous user might not be done. How do I handle this? I don't expect him/her to be objective, and I realize that I can't be 100% unbiased, but I don't want this to turn into a fight. What would you do?

I know that one of the central tenets of Wikipedia is that anyone can edit any article any time (with certain restrictions that need not be addressed here). My question is, do some Wikipedians appoint themselves editors and go around editing pages like "Neighborhood Watch" members?

If so, do they have any recognized status/power as a result -- e.g., after a certain period of time of doing this, and having been recognized as good at it, do they get the ability to make changes or tags that impact other users in ways other than simply editing other users' articles in a way that anyone else could?

It is difficult to distinguish those who are trying to do something helpful, and probably understand things better than I do, from those who are simply busy-bodies who feel compelled to change and/or comment on things because they get a certain gratification from doing so.

I'm always ready to learn and be corrected, but less interested in listening to (or accepting edits from) someone who simply enjoys correcting/editing things for the sake of feeling powerful, or some sense of civic duty.

I could spend all day editing other people's stuff, but it seems to me that unless there's a glaring error that misinforms people, editing should be left to those who 1) know something about a particular topic, or at least take a specific interest in it, and 2) those who don't make it their self-appointed job to go around editing pages.

However, if the Wikipedia culture is such that these people are regarded as harmless, or perhaps even beneficent, then I as a new-comer have to adjust my views to conform to the predominant culture.

"Editing addicts" and other busy-body types seem to me to be acting somewhat contrary to the spirit of a collective resource such as Wikipedia, which is to leave alone that which does you or others no harm.

Everyone's writing, grammer, and even Wiki-style can certainly be improved, but there's a definite feeling of having had someone change the word "happy" to "glad" for less than obvious or compelling reasons.

Hi, Thanks for the welcome. I'm an administrator for another wiki and that keeps me really busy so don't have a lot of time to participate here and learn all the different ways of doing things. The main Iris image that comes up when searching for Iris the plant is not an Iris, but a Dietes, a South African plant that is in the Iris family, but a different genus. I edited the text to say that, but didn't know how to replace the image with one of the other images and was reluctant to do that anyway as a first move, especially since this image which is quite nice had been higly rated. There is a wikipedia page for Dietes so it could be moved there, but I wasn't sure how to do it and unfortunately at the moment am short of time to try to figure it out. From my wiki:

Regarding the article Christian Bowman, which you tagged for speedy deletion with the reason "it is an article about a person, group of people, band, club, etc. that does not assert the importance or significance of the subject", I wanted you to know that I have removed the speedy deletion tag. This article does not qualify for speedy deletion because the article states that he was "the winner of the Education Queensland, Minister's Award for Excellence in Art in 1997", which is an assertion of importance. I'm reasonably new to this but have been reading all the guidelines.

The tidy up on the most recent stub I found was relatively okay as it was a matter of properly ordering and , to a degree, neutralising some of the commercial assertions in the stub. It's the next step that gets a little harder. I plan to look at the companies product releases as a against commercial trends. Also, even though I like their products, I know of one or two notable pieces of criticism of the products concerned, I guess they should be included for balance. Furthermore, there are substitutes and complimentary products from competitors, I'm guessing there should be some reference to these.

An example is if I type in "Ronald Reagan" in yahoo search engine, I see the wikipedia site and it has a summary. The three revert rule makes sense -- I guess it stops flame wars, or the wiki equivalent (edit wars?).

I get the general jist of Wikipedia, and appreciate its communal nature and spirit, but like all cultures it definitely has its more arcane bits, and what seems obvious to long-time Wikipedians is not always clear to us noobs ...

Thanks for the info and helpful suggestions. I have examined the policies, but find them a bit dense to retain after a single reading, and lack the amount of time it would take to really go through them thoroughly.
