TPS help needed

speaking of places in Oregon...

...ever heard of Palestine, Oregon? There was a placemarker sign (shown here) when I was a kid, but Google streetview shows it is currently removed (if I remember correctly and it was at the intersection of Oak Grove and Palestine northwest of Albany). I remember that church. I'm glad to know they didn't tear it down. Nearby there was another place marker called "Oak Grove" to the east of Oak Grove Elementary School on Oak Grove Drive, I think about where Karstens Lane is. I always wondered if they at one point had been considered true communities, and aspired to be someplace like Crabtree, Oregon, of if they were always thought of as neighborhood place names. There is another Oak Grove, Oregon (need to disambiguate that) in Polk County that appears to consist of a (defunct) school, a church and a grange hall and that's it. I don't know what its status was either. I vote for "wide spot in the road". In my informal assessment, I think a true community needs those three things (give or take a grain elevator or a water tower) and a store. Crabtree is definitely a going concern, there's no reason it couldn't incorporate as a city if it wanted to. My dad lived there for awhile when he was growing up. Palestine obviously had a church, I wouldn't doubt it had a grange hall, but I don't know about a school. There is still a cluster of houses there, but not historic structures, possible they could have replaced older buildings, they are smaller plot sizes than the surrounding area. Oak Grove, Benton County, had a school, and an old building which could have been a church or a grange hall (or perhaps both) but it was demolished when I was young. I never knew there to be any habitational concentration there, but that's why I'm interested, the past holds surprises. 78.26 _{( spin me / revolutions)} 22:01, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Hey there! Thank you kindly for your note regarding my user name. Now, I have spent the last hour reading about how to change user names, how to manage my own page, and how to be a better editor. I would like to take you up on your offer to obtain a new username, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do so. I have read through the Wikipedia:Questions page but the answers seem to be eluding me. Do I have to specifically ask someone for a name change? Or is there a link which I can do this easily myself?

I was already cranky. But even though approximately 90% of Wikipedia editors are male, it is narrow-minded to assume that the editor you are dealing with is male. That kind of thing makes me crankier. Unless you are Marcie. As far as the name of the Merchant Hotel, generally we go with whatever the NRHP calls it, though since this is a contributing property, it's not as big a deal and see also Sentinel Hotel (that name makes me cranky also). The two links I just added call it " Merchants Hotel". The plural gets more Google hits but that is including " Merchants' Hotel" and " Merchant's Hotel". A quick glance makes me think the plural without an apostrophe is more common, even if not correct. More research is needed. And some dabs and redirects it seems... Edits regarding Aram Hampson

Valfontis -- I see you have made some recent edits to the article Aram Hampson. You removed a section of Aram Hampson#Early life stating that it was "unsourced". The original paragraph included: Hampson and his sister Githa Hampson are the only brother and sister to win multiple state championships in both cross-country and track and field. -- Removing it because it was "unsourced" is a poor excuse for the deletion of the sentence. I will be adding that sentence again when I find a source, which I know where to look for reliable sources. As much as I appreciate editors, this edit was unnecessary in my opinion. I'm old enough to remember the TV show (Bob Barker era)... In Oregon, Donnybrook has potential ( OGN has half a page on the topic). It was just around the corner from Axehandle (a quarter page), which post office was called Kilts (half a page)... Hmm, looks like there needs to be some work done with redirects... Cool, my grandmother ws a postmaster in a coal town in West Virginia. As you can imagine, some of the town names were rather unusual or in some cases FUNNY....I got my Truth or Consequences postmark not too long ago, along with Tuba City and Happy Jack AZ.....I even felt inspired to provide a pic of the Red Devil Alaska Postmark as well as a Supai AZ postmark....far far away places. Red Devil has the distinction of shutting down their PO for a bit because (and I quote the postal record) nobody else wanted the job. Please read WP:EL. The Kesey article attracts way too many external links. If we put every link in the external links section relating to Kesey it would defeat the purpose of the encyclopedia, since the encyclopedia is not a collection of links. I considered the link you added carefully, and per my edit summary, the link to the pics doesn't add anything to our knowledge of Kesey. I see that Lena Hades is notable in her own right, but that doesn't mean her drawings of Kesey are any more notable than someone else's pictures of Kesey. If for some reason the article didn't have any images the link to the drawings might be helpful but we already know what he looks like. I hope that explains. North Williams Avenue

Should this one be renamed Williams Avenue to conform to the other streets in the Portland Streets category and template? If it needs a new name please fix it, and by extension if the article has deeper, more troublesome issues please advise. Geirfuglasker ( talk) 07:55, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

Cookie Monster, you have been warned repeatedly about your tone and civility. You may not be aware, but your tone is rude and snotty. I'm going to have to ask you to not post on my talk page any more. I am quick to judge because I am an adult with 9 years of experience on Wikipedia. I also happened to work at the State Legislature so I understand legislation. What you are doing is giving a "other crap exists" argument. The bills you've cited were all passed into law, which may make them notable, and I note the Oregon and Calfornia ones are considered landmark legislation, and the Texas one caused a lot of public debate. SB 166 hasn't even been heard in committee yet. It may not ever be heard in committee, as it was passed onto Rules over a month ago. At this point it is non-notable per WP:GNG. See WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. The Oregon ones are all named consistently and via consensus. That was the naming convention 9 years ago. If we want to change it it will have to be discussed. I am not sure why now (and I am not going to go back over my interaction with Kbabej to work it out), but I had assumed that Kbabej was female. Given the amount of young (and not so young) testosterone in the air around ANI, I sympathise with (although do not condone) anyone who states "I created a new account to report another user for disruptive editing, believing that I would be harassed after the report" (21:46, 12 February 2015), and if Kbabej was socking for the first time then I would have supported a warning with or without a short block (as was administered by Salvio giuliano on 16 March 2014). But the quote I gave on Kbabej's talk page puts this second bout of socking in a whole different category as I implied in my posting to Kbabej's talk page. -- PBS ( talk) 11:39, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

OK, PBS, I was just curious if it was an assumption based on his username or something. I won't further violate his privacy by defining any groups he may belong to, but I'm 99% sure he's male. In my experience (noting that I mostly edit in non-controversial areas) most people who complain about harassment on the wiki are in fact not being harassed but instead their edits aren't up to community standards and they don't like hearing that. This is from someone who has had her livelihood and safety threatened by someone who tried to out her, so I'm absolutely not saying that Wikipedia cannot be a hostile place for women to edit. I guess I'm just concerned that you think "I socked because I felt unsafe" could be used as an excuse, when in fact there are other channels for dealing with legitimate harassment. I'm having trouble articulating why this bothers me, I guess because my contributions are pretty much competent, notable, etc., and also I don't discuss my gender unless necessary (see "hostile place" above), so I'm not sure I've experienced the kind of harassment you thought he was experiencing and I don't want to speak for all female editors. I guess my take on it is "policy is policy", and maybe female editors can take care of themselves without resorting to violating policy? I'd be happy to hear from anyone who has a contrary opinion. My assumption was not based on recent developments, it was based on my interaction with the editor over a couple of pages back in January so I would not bet a beer that my initial assumption was right. I do not think it is only females who dislike the ANI environment, and I also know one or two women who edit Wikiepdia who are more than capable of initiating a dog fight at ANI if they think it is to their advantage. I am very concerned that ANI is not fit for purpose other than for the most simple of cases (see this example posed on 8 February 2012) and I think as time passes it is becoming less so. -- PBS ( talk) 23:14, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

Re: OSU NRHP District

Good to know. How interesting that there is a university NRHP District. We'll have to track down the NRHP nomination form and see which sites are included, then add then appropriate existing articles to WikiProject NRHP so they can keep an eye on their progress as well. I went to both U of O and OSU the other day for Wikipedia presentations, which went well. I have seen a few threads pop up recently as to whether it is OK to label someone a "conspiracy theorist". You may find some of these in WP:NPOVN or WP:FTN. Some argue that is is OK to state "X is a conspiracy theorist" whereas other prefer something like "X has been described as a conspiracy theorist". It would be nice if there was some large-scale discussion on this.

I think SS had a few conspiracy theories involving the Pope and the Vatican, but "anti-Catholic bigot" likely is not accurate. - Location ( talk) 03:28, 3 April 2015 (UTC)

Covered Wagon

Took a break from Portland sculptures to add Covered Wagon to the project. I'll have to create another for the L&C/Sacajawea relief on the other side of the main entrance and then see what other Salem sculptures need articles. Update: Also Dr. John McLoughlin (sculpture) + Lewis and Clark (sculpture) + Over the Top to Victory.
