Ex-Medicine bassist Eddie Joseph Ruscha, (son of the famous painter of the same name) started Maids of Gravity in Los Angeles, CA in 1987 with guitarist Jim Putnam, (also formerly of Medicine) and Craig "Irwin" Levitz on drums. [1] Their self-titled album was released in 1995 with the 2nd track "Only Dreaming" being their break-through single and biggest hit to date. [2] The self-titled album drew many comparisons to the Smashing Pumpkins' early work. [3] Sometime after their self-titled Jim Putnam left the band to start Radar Brothers. Putnam and Levitz were replaced by Eugene Gorester and Mark Kay respectively for the second and third albums, "The First Second" (1996) and "Strange Channel" (2000). [4]

Concerning the band name, Eddie states that he had a dream where he jokingly referred to his band by that name but when he woke up he actually thought it wasn't a bad name at all.
