Laura Garcia-Cannon is an award-winning television journalist currently with NBC Bay Area, KNTV, which covers the San Francisco Bay Area. She currently anchors Today in the Bay, which is the weekday morning news show for KNTV. Previously, she co-anchored Today in the Bay alongside her husband, Brent Cannon. Laura has also worked as a reporter in past occupations, and has worked elsewhere in the United States, including in Phoenix and Fresno. [1]

Education

Laura attended St. Mary's College of California in Moraga, California from 1987-1991. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in the areas of Communications and Government. [1]

In 2011 she gave an interview for the SMC Youtube page about her experience in journalism and broadcasting.

Professional Career

Garcia-Cannon has been the Morning News anchor for Today in the Bay with NBC Bay Area since 2000. For much of that time, she anchored alongside her husband, Brent Cannon. After accepting an Emmy award the two earned together, she said "It's great to be able to work side by side, we're a true team both on and off the air." [2]

In 2011, Brent became anchor of NBC Bay Area News at 7 PM, and Jon Kelley was brought in to co-anchor the morning show alongside Laura. [3]

Career History

Laura has worked with NBC Bay Area since early 2000.

Prior to joining the team at KNTV, she worked at KPHO in Phoenix as an investigative reporter for two years. She also has experience as a reporter with KSEE, KFSN and KMPH in Fresno, with NBC, ABC and FOX, respectively.

She began her career in San Francisco as a Production Assistant with KGO in 1991. [1]

Awards

Laura has received multiple awards for broadcasting throughout her career, including multiple Emmys, AP Awards, and other honors.

While co-anchoring Today in the Bay with her husband, the two earned numerous awards and recognitions for their on-air talent, including three consecutive years in which they received the Emmy award for Best Daytime Newscast. They were also named Best Daytime Newscast by the Bay Area Women in Radio and Television for two consecutive years. [4]

While with KPHO in Phoenix, Laura was honored with multiple Emmy and AP awards for writing and reporting. She also received the Associated Press Reporter of the Year Award for her work. [2]

Personal Life

Laura is married to fellow anchor Brent Cannon, and the couple have previously co-anchored the morning news program with KNTV, "Today In The Bay".
The pair met while both were working in Fresno, and together they have three triplets.

Laura "is an avid participant in various organizations". She is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and also serves on the Board of Trustees of her alma mater, Saint Mary's College of California. In addition, she serves on the Board of Directors for the American Cancer Society and the Board of the Catholic Professional Business Club.

According to her bio, she "enjoys golfing, skiing, snowshoeing, reading, cooking and spending time with family and friends". [2]
