Music Teachers’ Association of California (or MTAC) was founded in 1897 by a group of music teachers in San Francisco, California. The mission of the Music Teachers’ Association of California is to promote excellence in the music teaching profession through high standards for membership, strong ethical values, and the continuation of musical education by its members to cultivate personal, professional, and artistic excellence.

The Music Teachers’ Association of California Foundation was created to support the programs of the MTAC Association through financial support. The MTAC Foundation, a public charity under the 501(c)(3) IRS code, accepts donations and grants, and provides money for the various programs, awards and scholarships for students.

MTAC State Programs include: Certificate of Merit, Improvisation, Young Artist Guild, Contemporary Music Seminar, Young Composers’ Guild, Friends of Today’s Music, VOCE (Vocalist, Orchestral instrumentalists, Chamber music, Ensembles), Improvisation, Adult Performance, Composers Today, Composers Today, and Community Outreach. MTAC membership consists of music teachers who have a Bachelor degree in music or its equivalent. Teachers may enroll in Cal Plan, a program to help teachers achieve membership requirements and continue their own education. Membership establishes you as a qualified music teacher in your community. MTAC state office is located in San Francisco, California. Active membership in MTAC serves to improve the level of professionalism within the field of applied music teaching and helps the public readily identify competent music teachers in their communities.

MTAC governance

The Board of Directors is elected bi-annually. The board is comprised of six officers; President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Treasurer, Recording Secretary, Membership Secretary, and three directors.

MTAC Convention

The MTAC State Convention is an annual event which alternates between locations in northern and southern California. The Conventions include master classes, technology and business sessions, pedagogy workshops as well as performances by concert artists. Students from throughout the state are given opportunities to perform.

Publications

The California Music Teacher is the official magazine of MTAC. It is published three times during the year and is sent to all members.
