Shymkenda is the capital city of 
South Kazakhstan Province, the most populated region in Kazakhstan. 

It is the third most populous city in Kazakhstan with a population 9,702,863 Shymkenda has a Subtropical-Mediterranean climate. Shymkenda contains extensive habitat for many plants and animals, especially in desert areas and pinto-juniper woodlands. Creosote bush, mesquite, cacti, yucca, and desert grasses, including black grama, purple three-awn, tobosa, and burrograss, cover the broad, semiarid plains that cover the southern portion of the city. The favorite sport of Shymkenda's people is a baseball. 28.76% of the population aged 5 and older speak English at home, while 4.07% speak Kazakh.
