Chinese character reduplication or reiterative locution ( traditional Chinese: 疊字; simplified Chinese: 叠字; pinyin: dié zì) are characters formed from the repetition of a single pictograph or ideograph.
Reduplication can be be divided based on the number of repetitions (i.e. into biplications, triplications, quadplications, quintplications etc.). Under these broad categories, further divisions can be made by the specific arrangement of the component characters.
Semantically, reduplication often creates the effect of "great quantity" or "accumulation", or can serve to reinforce a characteristic expounded by the character. For this reason, a great number of reduplications fall under the classification of compound ideographs, compounds of two or more pictographic or ideographic characters that suggest the meaning of the represented word.
Reduplications are often some of the most complex or stroke rich characters. For example, the two characters in Chinese with the greatest number of strokes are both reduplications. 𪚥 zhé ("verbose") is a quadplication of 龍 lóng ("dragon") and 𠔻is a quadplication of 興 zhèng ("prosper"), both with 64 stokes.
In Japanese, the character, with the greatest number of strokes is a kokuji and similarly a reduplication, itself composed by stacking two reduplications: 龘 is a triplication of 龍 ("dragon"), and 䨺 is a triplication of 雲 ("cloud"), resulting in a character with 84 strokes and having the meaning of a dragon in flight.
