Merchant and the priest

The merchant and the priest ( Dutch: De koopman en de dominee) is a term commonly used to refer to the policies of the Netherlands, for example in foreign diplomacy.

Background

It is not known when the term first arose. However, the attitude referred to by the term is currently thought to have arisen in the Dutch Golden Age ( 1584- 1702). The country at the time was one of the few republics in Europe. There was no royalty, and very little nobility. The key components of political life were the merchants of the larger cities, and the ministers of the Dutch Reformed Church. A policy developed that focussed on two criteria: 1. Economic opportunities (the merchant) 2.

The convergence of economic and ideological motives received a boost around 1900, when several entrepreneurs improved the social and economic circumstances of their employees. Examples of this are:

Examples

Several cases are commonly seen as examples of the merchant and the priest.
