On June 17, 1965, a large flash flood occurred in the Scouting youth camp Philmont Scout Ranch near Cimarron, New Mexico, United States. The flood occurred mainly in the campsite Rayado Camp, hence the flood is sometimes referred to as the Rayado Flood, but also effected some other areas of Philmont, such as Fish Camp. Heavy rain throughout the camp caused waters in Rayado Canyon and the Cimarron River to rise to extreme levels, [1] up to 12.42 feet at its highest. [2] After June 17, water levels in the camp gradually decreased. [3] The impacts of the flood included the destruction of several camps [1] and the loss of many old photographs and documents kept at Philmont, [4] however no injuries or deaths resulted from the flood. [5] The 1965 flash flood is regarded by many as the most notable in Philmont's history until the the 2015 flood. [6]
