Zivarly

Zivarly is an upscale accessory brand, focusing on introducing art and design into the daily lives of the new middle-class in China. As the collaborating brand of "Beijing International Design Week". Zivarly hosted "Design Makes Life Better" lifestyle salon for the Design Week on Sept 26, 2012. About 200 people attended the event, including designers, opinion leaders, media, and officials of the Design Week to discuss how to use design products to enrich people's daily living. [1]

Zivarly has three product lines, "Tablescape", "Wallscape" and "Bodyscape", which aim to help bring artistic decorations from workspaces to dining areas to clothing. [4] [5]

Birth of the startup

Stella Xu, founder and CEO of Zivarly, previously served as Principle of The Boston Consulting Group. [6] She had more than 10-year’ experience with world-class management consulting firms in Boston, New York, and Beijing. Her former clients included Versace, Victoria’s Secret, and Calvin Klein.

Development of Zivarly began before 2012, when Stella seeing the business opportunity to create an upscale brand that can incorporate culture and arts into people’s daily lives. She firstly gained the support of her fellow Yale alum Prof. Min Wang (Yale Design School ‘88), the Dean of Design School of CAFA. Two other Yalies, Lifen Li and Allen Tan, also joined the team. Early in 2012, Stella launched Zivarly. She also tried to use Zivarly as a platform to help refine and introduce the works of talented independent designers. [9]

Products

Zivarly has three product lines:"Tablescape", "Wallscape" and "Bodyscape", which provides a wide array of design-oriented accessories for home and people. [10]

"Tablescape" is a series of high-end products specializing in creative tabletop decorations. "Three Ways of Living", which includes tea arts, floral arts and scent arts, is regarded as a typical series of this product line. [11]

"Wallscape" can be paintings created by young artists or other type of decorative products by incorporating art and design. [12]

"Bodyscape" is a series of products focused on clothing accessories. Zivarly works with designers all over the world to create "wearable art" to make art more touchable. In 2013, Zivarly worked with American artist Patty Hudak to launch a collection of silk scarves featuring Patty’s paintings. Zivarly selected eight works from her colorful oil painting series and did the redesign to showcase them on high-quality silk. [13]

Zivarly’s major sales channel is on line. Its products are available on its own website and are also carried by luxury and upscale products websites in China, including shangpin.com [14], ihaveu.com [15], and ymall.com [16].

In 2013, Zivarly entered into Upper-Luxury [17], the upscale luxury boutique.

Events

"Zivarly Lifestyle Salon" is founded by Zivarly CEO Stella Xu with other co-founders. It aims to bringing together opinion leaders and business elites to discuss middle-class related lifestyle and consumption topics in China.

"Zivarly Lifestyle Salon" has held for three times. [18] [19] [20] Co-founders included CHEN Zhiwu [21], tenured Professor of Finance at Yale University; WANG Min, Dean of the Design School at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts; ZHANG Lei, Hillhouse Capital Chairman; REN Zhiqiang [22], Hua Yuan Real Estate Chairman; Hugo XING, Founding Partner of IDG Venture Capital; and Annabelle LONG [23], Bertelsmann China CEO. LIANG Sicheng and LIN Huiyin’s great-granddaughter Annie LIANG Zhou Yang was introduced as the first Zivarly Brand Ambassador. [24]

In the media

Stella was named one of “the 100 most influential women in China” in late 2012, for building Zivarly and for helping young design students with their careers. [25]

In its first two years, Zivarly received nearly 100 reports by mainstream media in China, such as Sina, Sohu, Ifeng, Figaro, Bazaar, Cosmo Bride, the China Daily, and China National Radio. [26] [27] [28] [29] [30]

Mr Kwon Youg Gull, the Chairman of the “Seoul International Design Week”, has written that he hopes Zivarly can rise to become brand that fills the huge product gap in the China market. [31]
