The 1958 Springhill mining disaster occured in a Springhill mine on 23 October, 1958, when a stratum was completely emptied of its coal by miners. This resulted in a "bump" — the geological stress produced by the empty stratum weighed on the surrounding bedrock, causing all adjacent gallery pillars to suddenly and catastrophically disintegrate and thereby collapsing the shaft.
It is one of three well-known Springhill mining disasters, the subject of several books, and the most severe "bump" in North American mining history.
