Solomon George Levy (1891-1976) was a businessman and Boy Scout leader, who founded some of the first Cub Scout packs in Boy Scouts of America, served as member of the executive board of the Boy Scouts of America from 1928 through 1959; and president of the Chief Seattle Council of Boy Scouts from 1947 to 1948. [1] He was a 1958 recipient of the Silver Buffalo Award. [2] [3]
Background
Levy was born in London and emigrated to [where] in the United States in 1904, he lived in Chicago and then later in Port Angeles, Washington. [4] He was married to Sadie and had at least one child, Leon Benson Levy. [5]
In August 1929, he began experimental work in scouting that lead to establishment of the Cub Scout Program of Boy Scouts of America in 1933. The first two packs were formed in 1929 at Port Angeles and Kirkland, Washington and were modeled after the Britsh cub scouts.[ citation needed]
He was a close friend of Gen. Douglas MacArthur, and after World War II he helped restart scouting in Japan. [2]. Levy founded the Washington State International Trade Fair in 1950, and was a member until 1970. [4] In 1957, he became a member of the National Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America. [1]
Alpha Phi Omega
Levy served as advisor to the Alpha Phi Omega (APO) chapter at University of Washington. [6] In 1950, Levy was going to the Philippines to help generate more interest [in what] among scouts there. His friend, H. Roe Bartle (a former president of APO) told him about a service project that the fraternity (at that time entirely formed of former scouts) had done to help collect books to re-establish Filipino university libraries.
During his time in the Philippines, Mr. Levy passed on the story to groups of Filipino Scouts, indicating that it would be nice if a similar fraternity could be established in the Philippines. A group of scouts at Far Eastern University followed up on his story and started Alpha Phi Omega in the Philippines. [7]
