New Liberian is an online Liberian news site that reports on human rights,health and politics of Liberia and about its people, both in Liberia and the diaspora [1]. Semantics King Jr., a Liberian journalist living in Minneapolis, Minn, serves as both publisher and editor and manages a small network of journalists in Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria and the United States.
Launched in September 2007, NewLiberian.com grew from The Vision, a monthly newspaper by Liberian refugees for Liberian refugees at the Buduburam refugee camp. In August 2005, through a project supported by Journalists for Human Rights, The Vision launched thevisiononline.net [2]. Since then, The Vision received accolades from groups such as Amnesty International [3] and in 2006, Semantics King Jr. was awarded the World Press Institute fellowship [4]. In 2007, King started the New Liberian as he began the asylum process in Minneapolis. As opposed to the local Buduburam nature of The Vision, howeer, New Liberian aims to serve all Liberians, particularly those in exile.
In addition to analysis, commentary and news coverage, the New Liberian also posts the latest relevant press releases from the United Nations and President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf's executive mansion.
Powered by Wordpress, the blog is designed to look like a newspaper, often using publicly available images from WikiCommons, government press offices, and sometimes its own photographers.
It's current roster of Liberian writers include: Robert Carey (Monrovia), Joseph Swen (Accra), Mataly Mondaye (Lagos), and in the US, Sam K. Zinnah (Delaware)and Mansfield Duopu III (Minnesota) [5].
