Introduction and History

Hutchinson Middle School is a public middle school in Lubbock, Texas. This school is one of ten middle schools in the Lubbock Independent School District. As of the 2022-2023 school year, Michael Stewart is the principal of Hutchinson Middle School, and Laura Tatum and Patrick Villareal are the Assistant Principals. ^[1]

Hutchinson Middle School was named after Dr. J. T. Hutchinson, who lived in Lubbock in the early 1900s. In 1980, Hutchinson because the first magnet junior high school in the Lubbock Independent School District. This meant that along with students enrolled in feeder schools, other students that didn't attend one of these schools could also apply to attend Hutchinson Middle School. Soon after, Hutchinson established an emphasis on fine arts. ^[2]

Demographics

As of the 2021-2022 School year, the school had an enrollment of 848 students. 51.2% are Hispanic, 23% are White, 7.0% are Asian, 5.8% are African American, 3.7% are multi-ethnic, and 0.4% are American Indian. 47.2% of the students receive free/reduced-price meals. ^[3]

Academics

In the 2022-2023 school year, the school's average Standardized Test Score was 75.85. Hutchinson Middle School ranked 389th in Texas and 2254th in the United States. Also, Hutchinson Middle School is in the 82.7% Percentile in Texas when ranked according to STAAR Test scores. ^[4]

Extracurriculars

Hutchinson Middle School has a variety of extracurricular activities available to students, including Dance, Photography, Art, Creative Writing, Band, Choir, Orchestra, Digital Media and Animation, Visual Production, Robotics, Junior Historians, Robotics, FCA, Student Council, TMSCA, National Science Bowl, MathCOUNTS, NJHS, and Chess Club.

National Science Bowl

In the 2019-2020 school year, Hutchinson Middle School got 1st place in Regional Science Bowl, advancing them to Nationals. However, due to COVID-19, the National Competition was canceled. ^[5]

In the 2021-2022 school year, Hutchinson Middle School won the Regional Science Bowl again, advancing to the online Semi-Finals. ^[6]
