Pretend mode is a primitive form of mental activity in which the inner world is divorced from contact with the external world. prtend mode is the opposite of psychic equivalence as a form of pre- mentalization: in the latter there is no distinction with or protection from the outer world, in the former interaction between inner and outer worlds is stifled.
