Eastside Catholic School (previously: Eastside Catholic High School) is a private Roman Catholic school in Sammamish, Washington, USA. It was previously located in Bellevue, Washington in a leased facility from the Bellevue School District. Located in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Seattle, Eastside Catholic is fully accredited by the state of Washington, the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools and the Northwest Association of Secondary Schools. It is also a member of the National Catholic Education Association. The school has approximately 700-800 students in grades 6-12, employs 100 faculty members and four counselors. [2] The Eastside Catholic athletics mascot is the Crusader.The school's first mascot was the virgin (after virgin Mary) but then was switched in 1986. The school colors are orange and navy blue. Approximately 85% of the student body participates in after school athletics or activities, and the school participates as a member of the Metro League and plays in the 3A division. History

The idea for Eastside Catholic originated in 1974; in 1980 the new school opened its doors. The campus was originally located in downtown Bellevue, opposite where Bellevue Square mall is presently located. The next campus was rented from the Bellevue School District; classes were held at that campus from 1989 to June 2008. Opened in August 2008, the new 42 million dollar campus is located in the city of Sammamish, Washington. The school simultaneously expanded to include grades 6-8. [7]

Activities and Sports

Football

Eastside Catholic participates in the Metro League. Eastside Catholic football is well known in the Puget Sound area for beating its rival O'Dea High School in a double overtime game in 2008, their first win against O'Dea in 14 years [10]. Bill Marsh who was the head football coach for many years at Eastside Catholic resigned in March 2009, and former Utah Blaze and Washington State University Quarterback Jason Gesser has assumed the Head Coach position [11] [12].

Speech and Debate

Eastside Catholic has a thriving forensics program. Awards are consistently won in regional tournaments. The program was started by the the legendary Mike Burton, and is currently coached by his protege, Brad Wiegel, who is also the most successful Eastside debater ever.

Volleyball

Eastside is known for its excellent varsity volleyball, which took second place in state in 2008 and 2003. [5]

Mock Trial

Eastside Catholic has had a strong Mock Trial program the past few years. In 2008, they took 3rd in the King County District Competition and finished 13th in the Washington State Competition. [13] [14] In 2007, the team had its best season in school history. Eastside won the Snohomish County District Competition, placed fourth at the Washington State Competition, and was invited to participate in the American Mock Trial Invitational where they also placed fourth. [15] [16] Robert Matthews started the program in 2003-04 and helped lead the team to its aforementioned success. [17]

Middle School Sports

The middle school participates in sports with the Archdiocese of Seattle's Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). The sports offered by the middle school through CYO are soccer, cross country, basketball, volleyball and track. [18]
