Airdrie United F.C. Ladies we're a Scottish women's football club affiliated to Airdrie United FC until the club wound up their women's team in 2012. [1] The entire ladies squad had quit and defected to play under Cumberland Colts [1] midway through season 2012. [3]
United won promotion to the Scottish Women's First Division from the Scottish Women's Second Division West in the 2011 season as runners-up behind champions Kilwinning SC. [4] They secured automatic promotion as the best runners-up of the four regional Second Divisions. [4] [5]
Midway through season 2012, [3] all 20 members of the ladies squad inlcuding player/manager Julie McSherry quit and defected to play under Cumberland Colts claiming they didn't get the financial backing they needed to stay. [1] McSherry, who had led the team for over 15 years, revealed they made the move reluctantly. [1] The team couldn’t afford the costs of facilities for games and training. [1] And with no youth set-up for a ladies team at United and not looking likely any time soon, they felt it was the right move. [1] The team finished the season as Airdrie United Colts.
Before the 2013 season began, United decided to wind up their women's team explaining there was no market for it now. [1] It left United without a women's team for the first time in over a decade. [1] The defection of the players and United's decision to wind up their squad allowed Cumbernauld Colts to take their place in the First Division. [1] [6]
