The Spiral Group was founded by Romare Bearden, Al Hollingsworth, Merton Simpson, and Hale Woodruff in solidarity with the Civil Rights Movement, formed on the principle that visual art and artists have a valuable contribution to make to the struggle for Civil Rights.
